INFORMATION AND BOOKING TRIER MAY 14 – OCTOBER 16, 2016 SERVICE INFORMATION FOR TRAVEL ORGANISERS AND GROUPS NERO RECONSIDERED MUSEUM AM DOM TRIER AN EXHIBITION IN THREE MUSEUMS Hardly any Roman emperor has generated as much interest as Nero (reigned AD 54– 68). For the first time in Central Europe, a large exhibition to be held at three different museums with numerous select exhibits from Germany and abroad will be devoted to his life and the consequences of his rule but also to his image today. Today, the emperor is primarily associated with extravagance, megalomania and cruelty. NERO AND THE CHRISTIANS Current research, however, paints Nero in a very different light. As many as three museums in Trier, the largest Roman city north of the Alps, will devote an exhibition to the controversial emperor in 2016. The Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier will show NERO – “EMPEROR, ARTIST AND TYRANT”, the Museum am Dom “NERO AND THE CHRISTIANS and the Stadtmuseum Simeonstift “HEDONISM AND CRIME. THE MYTH OF NERO”. Terra sigillata bowl: Female martyr between two lions. Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum Mainz. Photo: RGZM/Lübke & Wiedemann, Stuttgart. The Museum am Dom focuses on the early Christian persecutions under Emperor Nero, and uses them as an opportunity to examine the relationship between the Christians, the Roman state and its religion. The exhibition shows and analyses ancient depictions of sacrifies and Roman sacrificial practices, demonstrating how the conflict with the Christians arose. Based on the martyrdoms of the Apostles Peter and Paul in Nero’s time, the exhibition illuminates the regionally and qualitatively quite different phases of Christian persecutions. The topicality of the subject is illustrated by contrasting ancient with present-day religious persecution. Emperor Constantine’s tolerance edict led to a new situation for the Christians. Under Emperor Theodosius, Christianity was raised to the status of state religion, and the formerly persecuted became themselves persecutors. Along with archaeological objects and models, the exhibition places a particular focus on medieval and early modern depictions of Christian martyrs in the Roman era. Gold coin with portrait of Nero. RHEINISCHES LANDESMUSEUM TRIER STADTMUSEUM SIMEONSTIFT TRIER NERO – EMPEROR, ARTIST AND TYRANT HEDONISM AND CRIME. THE MYTH OF NERO The large presentation will show Nero’s carrier chronologically: the caesura in the first years of his reign came with the murder of his power-hungry mother Agrippina. The emperor’s passion was for the arts; he himself performed as actor, musician and chariot driver, and comissioned the construction of the enormous domus aurea, his Golden Palace. The palace and grounds were erected in a part of Rome that had earlier been destroyed by a devastating fire. The Trier region was also sucked into the politically desperate situation when the Celtic Treveri rose up following Nero’s suicide, leading to a final act in the empire’s crisis – this, too, is a theme of the exhibition. Few figures from Antiquity have experienced a similar career in visual art as Nero. Above all, the acts of cruelty attributed to him – the dissection of the corpse of his mother Agrippina, the forced suicide of Seneca or the fatal kick in the abdomen of his pregnant wife Sabina Poppaea, have determined the image of the Roman emperor over centuries. The net of passion for grandeur, decadence and cruelty entangling Nero and his rule has also inspired numerous artists. Trier fascinates at every turn with the monumental Roman structures: Porta Nigra, Amphitheater, Imperial and Barbara Baths, Constantine’s palace audience hall and the Roman Bridge are UNESCO World Heritage sites. NERO – THE EXHIBITION EXPERIENCE 2016 IN TRIER Marble portrait of Nero. Copy: Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier. Original: Munich, Staatliche Antikensammlung und Glyptothek. It is the last years of Nero’s reign that have fashioned today’s image of a tyrant, persecutor of Christians and arsonist. This image spread as far back as the writings of ancient authors such as Tacitus and Suetonius, members of the aristocracy whose way of thinking was anathema to Nero. The exhibition shows his ascent as successor to the throne, his reign and its violent end. Nero was extremely popular among his subjects for much of his reign. Only later on did he lose his sense of reality. The development from the young promising heir to the throne to the hated tyrant is charted in more than 400 exhibits from Germany and abroad. S TADTMUSEUM SIMEONS T IF T The Stadtmuseum Simeonstift Trier will undertake for the first time a comprehensive evaluation of this pictorial tradition. Paintings, graphics, photos, films and operas from the earliest surviving depictions of the Middle Ages to the Nero image that has featured in the more recent and most past will bring this ever-changing reception history to life.
