Terminal Learning Objective Upon completion of this lesson, you will be able to perform radiological monitoring and survey operations including computing transmission and correlation factors, recording data on DA Form 1971-R or 1971-1-R, and preparing and submitting NBC 4 Reports. B-6 VG 1 Learning Objective A This learning objective will address how to supervise radiation monitoring. B-6 VG 2 Area Radiological Monitoring Periodic monitoring consists of frequent checks of the unit area for radiation. Continuous monitoring is the surveillance for radiation in the unit area or position. Aroundthe-clock check for radiation in the area. B-6 VG 3 Radiation Monitoring Techniques Direct monitoring is done outside and is the simplest and most precise of the techniques. Indirect monitoring is done inside shelters or vehicles. Allows unit to measure radiation levels and still keep exposure to a minimum. B-6 VG 4 Radiation Monitoring Reports Automatic reports - All units in the contaminated area submit certain monitoring reports automatically. These provide minimum essential information for warning, hazard evaluation, and survey planning. Directed reports - Special units may be required or directed to submit additional reports. B-6 VG 5 Automatic Reports Initial reports - First report sent when the unit monitor records an outside dose rate reading of 1 or more cGyph. Peak reports - Sent because radiation levels will rise, peak, and then decrease. Special reports - These reports invite command attention to areas or conditions of serious concern. B-6 VG 6 Directed Reports A Series report consists of dose rate readings taken at the same location at 30-minute intervals for 2 ½ hours followed by hourly reports. A Summary report shows the radiation distribution throughout a unit’s area of responsibility. The Verification report is a unit’s response to a direct request from the NBCC, if data is lacking from a specified location near or in the unit area. B-6 VG 7 Learning Objective B This learning objective will address how to prepare and submit NBC 4 Nuclear Reports. B-6 VG 8 NBC 4 Nuclear Reports When any unit detects NBC hazards through monitoring, survey or reconnaissance, this information is reported using an NBC 4 Report. B-6 VG 9 Prepare an NBC 4 Nuclear Report NBC 4 Radiation Dose Rate Measurements or Chemical/Biological Areas of Contamination For use of this form, see FM 3-3; the proponent agency is TRADOC. From To Precedence IMMEDIATE Security Classification Date-Time (Zulu, Local, or Letter Time Zone) Type of Report Category of Report Nuclear Chemical Initial Follow-Up Biological Instructions 1. Line items QUEBEC, ROMEO, and SIERRA may be repeated as often as necessary. 2. Line items HOTEL, QUEBEC, ROMEO, and SIERRA are mandatory for NBC 4 reports. 3. Line items ALPHA and KILO are aotional for NBC 4 reports. B-6 VG 10 Prepare an NBC 4 Nuclear Report (cont.) B-6 VG 12 Calculate Correlation Factors (CF) During radiological monitoring, take shielded readings. —Take unshielded readings within three minutes of the shielded readings. —Record this information on DA Form 1971-R. Use the following formula to compute the correlation factor (CF): OD / ID =CF Round the answer to the nearest hundredth. B-6 VG 13 Learning Objective D This learning objective will address how to record data on DA Form 1971-R or 1971-1-R. B-6 VG 14 Purpose of DA Form 1971-R or 1971-1-R The DA Form 1971-R is used to record monitoring data at the unit level. It is also used as a copy sheet for monitoring data passed from one headquarters to another. B-6 VG 15 DA Form 1971-R B-6 VG 16
