Evelyn is the past board secretary and has been very instrumental in writing grants and bringing in extra funds over the past couple years. She was the driving force behind the grant that let us start the Wednesday lunch program. Thank you Evelyn, your efforts are appreciated! Super Bowl Party Feb 1 Join your friends at the Lake Stevens Senior Center to cheer our team to a Super Bowl win! The party begins at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 1st. This will be a potluck event; the Center will provide coffee, please bring snacks and/or soda to share (no alcohol please). Feb. 10 Join us for a trip to the Museum of History and Industry on Tuesday, February 10th. MOHAI is dedicated to enriching lives through preserving, sharing, and teaching the diverse history of Seattle, the Puget Sound region, and the nation. The cost is $25 (includes admission). The van will leave the Center at 9:00 a.m. and leave the museum to return at 2:00 p.m. Lunch will be on your own at the Compass Café on-site. As of the print-date we have 194 members on the roster—our 2014 membership Continued . . . travelers. It also brings in donations for the Center. We need more than 20 people to operate the twelve, 4-hour shifts. total was 279—so we still several members who still need to renew. Membership privileges are now suspended until you renew. You can always check in at the office to find out if your membership is current. FYI—According to a recent article in the Herald: “Signs alerting drivers to the availability of free coffee are returning to rest areas on I-5 in Smokey Point”. As of July 1, 2015 there will be some changes to the membership policy. The board has decided to no longer offer a discount for couples. Anyone joining or renewing after that date will pay the $20 per person rate. Center Reminders Office Hours: Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. The Center is also open at other times based on scheduled events such as the Friday luncheons. Bunco is Recruiting Members Our Bunco Group is looking for new members to add to their fun! If you would enjoy some fun and fellowship once a month, please join us for Bunco on the 2nd Tuesday of each month from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Snow Days: For snow/ice closures, check the school reports. If Lake Stevens School District is closed, the Senior Center will also be closed. “If in doubt, don’t go out.” AARP Safe Driving Class March 18 & 19 Volunteer Hours: VERY IMPORTANT— We appreciate all of our volunteers very much! If you are a Center volunteer, please fill out a time sheet for us each month. The Next AARP Driver Safety Class is scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, March 18 and 19 from 12:00-4:00 p.m. This is a two-part class, and you must attend both days to receive certification. Become a more skilled and competent driver and save on your auto insurance. Schedule early, seating is limited. Board Meetings: The Lake Stevens Senior Center Board meets the second Monday of each month, at 9:30 a.m. here at the Center. Senior Center Apparel: Center hats, t-shirts, and sweatshirts are available for purchase. Check in at the office for more info. Food Sales to Senior Center The schedule has been set for the 2015 Rest Stop Service. We are scheduled to serve coffee and refreshments at the Smokey Point Southbound Rest Area on I-5 from May 8 through May 11. Please save the dates on your calendar and sign -up for a shift. This is a great opportunity to be of service to our community and to summer Papas Mexican Grill will donate 10% of their Wednesday food sales to the Lake Stevens Senior Center. President’s Corner . . . Remember When ~ 1940 Franklin Roosevelt is President. The life expectancy is 62.9 years. There is never a case when a person pays tax on more than 85 percent of his or her Social Security benefits, based on Internal Revenue Service (IRS) rules. Now, let’s get down to the numbers. If you file a federal tax return as an individual and your income is between $25,000 and $34,000, you may have to pay income tax on up to 50 percent of your benefits. If your income is more than $34,000, then up to 85 percent of your benefits may be taxable. The average income is $1,725 per year. The cost of a new house is $3,925. The cost of a new car is $850. Average rent is $30 per month. Gasoline is 11 cents per gallon. If you are married and you file a joint return, and you and your spouse have a combined income that is between $32,000 and $44,000, you may have to pay income tax on up to 50 percent of your benefits. If your combined income is more than $44,000, then up to 85 percent of your benefits may be taxable. A first-class postage stamp is 3 cents. A movie ticket is 30 cents each. The cost of coffee is 42 cents per pound. A loaf of fresh baked bread cost 8 cents.
