TURN OVER FOR MORE 11TH AP, APUSH, 12TH HONORS AND 12TH AP
AP US History (APUSH – Pope and Willoughby prospective students only)
In addition to completing the above literature reading, students must complete the following:
REQUIRED WILLOUGHBY:
1. The Thirteen American Arguments, by Howard Fineman
2. SEE MS. WILLOUGHBY FOR ADDITIONAL TITLES. SHE HAS A LIST FROM WHICH YOU MUST CHOOSE.
REQUIRED POPE:
1. TEXTBOOK: You are to read Chapter 1 (no notes necessary) and take Cornell Notes on Chapters 2, 3, 4, & 5.
Remember NOT to take notes on the right side of the page….THAT is for lecture notes. Your notes do not have to
be in complete sentences; it is whatever you need to remember what was covered in the text. Then LATER you will
summarize the two together at the bottom of the page. BEFORE I begin a new chapter of the textbook you will
take an open Cornell Notes quiz. Therefore, if you have done the work, you SHOULD make an A on the quiz! I am a
FIRM BELIEVER that the textbook is a key component making a 5 on the AP exam!! On the first day of school you
will give me your notebook and I will make sure that you are doing the process correctly. THEN on the second day
you will take an open Cornell Note Quiz. The notebook is worth 400 points (100 per chapter) and the quiz, which is
chronological, is worth 400 points (100 per chapter).
2. Search the internet and find four documents for each chapter you read. This is to include AT LEAST ONE
PIECE OF ART!!! Then, you are to read that document and interpret its meaning focusing on the context of the
chapter you are applying it to. NOTE!! You can use the documents at the end of a chapter for an IDEA, BUT you
CANNOT use them for your documents. This is worth 400 points as well.
3. Purchase a copy of After the Fact, the Art of Historical Detection, VOLUME ONE!!!! This is REALLY cheap
online. I mean like .75 cheap….as in the shipping can cost more than the book!! Read the essay titled “Starving
Time in Virginia and Visible and Invisible World. “ I will have questions related to this for you to answer. This is
worth 200 points
4. FINALLY, (I know POPE STOP!!!!!!) You need to purchase The Scarlet Letter. You do not have to start reading it
yet. You can, but it isn’t necessary until school starts (those taking four AP classes might want to get a jump on
this). We will read a couple of novels this year and a few short stories or plays that relate to the perspectives of
the time periods we cover.
