SERIES HISTORY: BRUINS VS. WILDCATS UCLA leads the all-time series against Arizona 53-22. The teams played just once in 2014, with the Wildcats posting a sweep in Malibu on Sept. 26. UCLA has swept Arizona in the two most recent matchups in Westwood (2012-2013) and is 28-9 at home against the Wildcats. Arizona’s last win at UCLA was a sweep in 2011. Each of the last six meetings between the two teams have gone three sets (Arizona 4-2). SCOUTING THE ARIZONA STATE SUN DEVILS Arizona State (15-2, 4-2 Pac-12) headed into last weekend’s play undefeated, however came away with not only setbacks to Washington and Washington State on the road, but also the loss of its top producer on offense in senior Macey Gardner. Gardner, the leader in kills per set at 3.73, was injured during last Friday’s match in Seattle and did not play in Pullman. Arizona State, which is averaging 13.31 kills, 0.93 aces, 14.93 digs and 2.85 blocks per set with a .233 hitting percentage, turns to the triumvirate of junior Cassidy Pickrell (2.77), senior Whitney Follette (2.11) and junior BreElle Bailey (2.07). Senior Bianca Arellano (6.10 assists per set) and freshman Kylie Pickrell (5.27) split the setting duties. Sophomore Halle Harker is tops on the squad with 3.64 dps, while Follette (1.32) and Bailey (1.12) are each averaging over a block per set. SERIES HISTORY: BRUINS VS. SUN DEVILS UCLA leads the all-time series with Arizona State 67-10, but the Sun Devils have won the last two meetings, both in five sets. The teams met just once last season, as Arizona State won in Tempe (Nov. 26). The Sun Devils also defeated the Bruins in Westwood on Nov. 22, 2013. The Bruins had won six straight matchups prior to ASU’s two-match winning streak (five sweeps). ANDERSON AT IT AGAIN IN SWEEP OF BUFFS Junior Jordan Anderson reached the 20-kill mark for the fifth time this season, hitting the number on the nose, adding a .444 hitting percentage and five digs, as the 12th-ranked Bruins swept Colorado on Sunday at the Coors Events Center. Set scores were 26-24, 25-15, 25-19. The Bruins won their third straight match and improved to 13-3 overall, 4-2 in Pac-12 play and 11-0 in matches away from Westwood. The Buffaloes fell to 10-8 and 2-4 in league action. The UCLA middles had another outstanding hitting match, combining for 12 kills and only one error in 21 attempts (.524). Junior Claire Felix tallied six kills and no errors in 11 attempts (.545), while junior Jennie Frager added six kills and one miscue in 10 swings (.500) to go with four blocks. Sophomore Reily Buechler was also in double figures in kills with 11, redshirt junior Haley Lawless added eight and redshirt sophomore Ryann Chandler posted 46 assists, seven digs and two aces, setting the Bruins to a season-best .343 hitting percentage. Junior Taylor Formico recorded 12 digs, senior Karly Drolson added six with two aces and senior Rachel Inouye notched five digs. After dropping the initial point of the match, the Bruins scored three in a row on two Lawless kills and a Drolson ace. Colorado went on a 5-2 run to go up 6-5, but a 4-0 streak by UCLA on two Felix kills, one from Buechler and a CU attack error put the visitors ahead by a set-best three. Colorado stormed back with a 13-7 run to take its own set-best lead of three at 19-16 before UCLA came back with another run to take the opener. At 20-18 Buffaloes, three in a row for the Bruins on an Anderson kill, a Frager/Lawless block and a CU attack error made it 2120. Six sideouts later, the Bruins had a set point at 24-23, but it was saved. A Buechler kill gave UCLA another try and Anderson crushed her team-best sixth kill of the opener to finish the 26-24 win. Buechler added four kills, while Felix and Lawless had three each. Drolson posted five digs, as the Bruins out-hit the Buffaloes .262 to .211. The Bruins led wire-to-wire in the second set, scoring the first five points and nine of the first 10. Two Lawless kills, a Chandler ace, a kill by Anderson and a Colorado attack error made it 5-0, and after a sideout, kills by Anderson and Buechler, a Drolson ace and another Buffalo attack error increased the lead to 9-1. UCLA’s lead was never below seven for the rest of the set, reaching 10 for the first of two times following Chandler’s second ace of the second to make it 17-7. Leading 23-15, back-to-back Anderson kills closed out the 25-15 victory. Anderson posted six kills for the second set in a row, while Buechler and Lawless added three apiece. Formico recorded five digs, as the Bruins outhit the Buffaloes .464 to .200. The Bruins trailed just once at 2-1 in the third before an 8-3 run made it 9-5 UCLA. Anderson (three kills) and Buechler (two kills and a combo block) were each a part of three points during the run. Colorado trimmed its deficit to one at 14-13, but could get no closer. A 6-1 run catapulted the Bruins’ lead to a set-best six at 2014. Anderson had three kills and a solo roof during the run, Felix added a block and Chandler and Frager combined on a roof. Leading 23-19, the Bruins received a Buechler/Felix block to set up match point and a Buechler kill finished the 25-19 victory. Anderson had eight kills for the Bruins to again lead the way, Buechler added four and Frager posted three. Formico recorded five more digs, as the Bruins out-hit the Buffaloes .342 to .189. SEASON BESTS FOR FELIX IN WIN AT UTAH Junior Jordan Anderson led the 12th-ranked Bruins with 18 kills and six digs, while junior Claire Felix had season bests in kills (11) and hitting percentage (.667), as UCLA defeated Utah in four sets on Friday at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Set scores were 17-25, 25-12, 25-15, 25-16. The Bruins improved to 12-3 overall and 3-2 in Pac-12 play, while the Utes fell to 7-9 and 1-4 in league action. Felix had only one error in 15 attempts to go with five blocks. Three other Bruins posted at least eight kills. Sophomore Reily Buechler recorded nine with just one error in 22 attempts (.364), adding nine digs in just three sets. Junior Jennie Frager notched eight kills and four blocks, while redshirt junior Haley Lawless had eight kills. Redshirt sophomore Ryann Chandler set the Bruins to a .258 hitting percentage, recording 48 assists, six digs and four blocks. Junior Taylor Formico had 16 digs and two service aces and senior Karly Drolson notched six digs. The Bruins had only one lead in the opening set, 1-0, after a Utah service error to start the match. The Utes scored the next three and UCLA was unable to get even for the rest of the set. The Bruins were within three late in the set at 20-17, but Utah recorded the final five points to take it 25-17. Anderson and Frager each had three kills in the first, junior Jessyka Ngauamo added five digs and Formico notched four, as the Bruins hit -.053 to Utah’s .194. Set number two was a complete 180 for the Bruins, who more than doubled up the Utes to even the match. The Bruins trailed 4-3 before scoring four in a row on two Utah attack errors, a Buechler kill and a Frager ace to go up 7-4. Utah scored the next two to get to within one, but could get no closer, as a 4-1 UCLA run on kills by Buechler, Felix and Anderson and a Ute service error made it 11-7. But that was just the beginning for the Bruins. At 11-8, UCLA finished the set on a 14-4 run to rout the Utes in the second. Ten straight points on a Felix kill, back-to-back Formico aces, consecutive Frager kills, an Anderson kill, back-to-back Utah attack errors, another Anderson kill and a Chandler/Frager block made it 21-8. The Bruins’ biggest lead was 14 at 23-9, as they won the second 25-12. Anderson and Frager again paced the Bruins with four kills each, while Buechler added three with four digs. Formico notched four digs and two aces, as UCLA out-hit Utah .423 to -.034. UCLA never trailed in the third set, scoring four of the first five on two Anderson kills, one by Frager and a Buechler solo block. At 5-3, a Buechler kill, a Chandler/Frager roof and a Utah attack error extended the advantage to five. With the score 13-10, the Bruins went on a 7-1 run to break it open. A Buechler kill and back-to-back Utah errors made it 16-10. After a sideout, another Utah attack error, consecutive Buechler kills and a Buechler/Felix combo block made it 20-11. Ahead 22-15, an Anderson kill and back-to-back roofs by Frager and Lawless finished up the 25-15 victory. Anderson paced the Bruins with six kills, while Buechler added five kills and four digs. The Bruins out-hit the Utes .400 to .061. The Bruins only trailed once in the fourth to finish the win. With UCLA up 10-7, the Utes scored four straight to take an 11-10 edge. However, the Bruins responded with a 10-2 run to go up 20-13. A Lawless kill, a Felix solo block and a Utah attack error made it 13-11. After a sideout, a Lawless kill, two Felix kills and a Ute error increased the lead to five. Following another sideout, a Felix kill, a Chandler/Felix block and a Utah attack error upped it to 20-13. Utah scored the next two, but UCLA took a set-best, nine-point lead on a Felix kill, back-toback kills by Anderson and a Ute attack error to earn nine match points. And not surprisingly, it was Anderson who closed things out to give the Bruins a 25-16 win. Anderson and Felix each had five kills, Lawless added four and Formico had five digs. The Bruins out-hit the Utes .367 to .132. Sealy guided the Bruins to a National Championship in 2011. Last season, the Bruins finished 22-12 and in a tie for fourth in the Pac-12 Conference (11-9), reaching the Regional Semifinals of the NCAA Tournament. Five Bruins were named to the All-Pac-12 Teams in 2014, as Karsta Lowe earned All-Pac-12, All-Region and AVCA All-America First Team accolades. Reily Buechler, Julie Consani and Taylor Formico were named All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention, while Buechler and Olga Strantzali were recognized on the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team. UCLA led the country in kills (15.10) and assists (14.26) per set in 2014, the first time the Bruins have led the nation in a stat category since 1997, while Lowe was tops in the country in kills and points per set. A trio of Bruins were named to the All-Pac-12 Teams in 2013, as Lowe ICHAEL EALY was named All-Pac-12 First Team to go with her AVCA All-Region First Team and All-America Honorable Mention accolades. Kelly Reeves was named EAD OACH All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention and Claire Felix was recognized on the Pac-12 IXTH EAR All-Freshman Team. UCLA went 15-15, recording a 6-14 mark in Pac-12 play. The Bruins were fifth in the league in hitting percentage and kills per set and sixth in assists per set. ECORD In 2012, the Bruins posted a 23-8 record, finishing in a tie for fourth in the Pac-12 with a 14-6 mark and advancing to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. Two Bruins, Rachael Kidder and Tabi Love, were named All-America, All-Region and All-Pac-12, while Zoë Nightingale earned All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention accolades. UCLA was second in the nation in kills per set (14.76), third in assists per set (13.84) and fifth in hitting percentage (.295), which was also the second-best, single-season total in program history. The Bruins led all Pac-12 teams in hitting and were second in kps and aps. In 2011, Sealy led the Bruins to the program’s fourth NCAA title and seventh National Championship. The Bruins posted a 30-6 record and defeated four-time defending champion Penn State, #1-overall seed Texas, Florida State and Illinois en route to the championship. Sealy was named the AVCA National Coach of the Year. The Bruins finished second in the Pac-12 with a 17-5 record. Six players were honored on the All-Conference teams, while Kidder, the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Tournament, was a First Team All-America and All-Region selection. UCLA finished fifth in the nation in assists per set (13.71) and eighth in kills per set (14.52). Among Pac-12 teams, the Bruins ranked first in aps, second in kps and opponent hitting percentage (.160) and third in digs per set (15.95). In his first campaign, Sealy guided the Bruins to a 22-9 record, a fourth-place finish in the Pacific-10 Conference (11-7) and a Second-Round appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Three Bruins were named to the All-Pac-10 team in 2010, Dicey McGraw (First Team), Lainey Gera (Honorable Mention) and Kidder (Honorable Mention), while McGraw also earned AVCA All-Pacific Region Honorable Mention accolades. UCLA finished in the top half of the Pac-10 in digs (2nd, 15.41), assists (4th, 13.46), kills (4th, 14.26) and aces (5th, 1.20) per set along with opponent hitting percentage (4th, .187). Sealy spent part of the summer of 2012 in London at the Olympic Games, serving as a scout coach for the U.S. men’s volleyball team. UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero announced on Feb. 10, 2010 that Sealy was named head coach of the Bruin women’s volleyball program. Sealy returned to his alma mater after spending four seasons (2006-09) as an associate head coach at the University of Hawai’i. He was a three-time All-American and an assistant coach for four years with the UCLA men’s volleyball team and was an assistant with the Bruin women’s volleyball program in 2005. “We are excited to welcome back Michael Sealy to lead the women’s volleyball program,” Guerrero said. “Michael clearly possesses the necessary credentials to allow UCLA to compete at the highest level. He is well-respected in the volleyball community and has an enthusiastic and passionate approach towards the game. Furthermore, as a former Bruin player and coach, he understands the tradition of excellence that has defined the volleyball programs at UCLA and I am confident that he will continue that legacy of success with ambition and integrity.” “I am very excited and inspired to be back at UCLA,” said Sealy. “I feel very fortunate and humbled to take over a program with such a storied history. I would like to thank Dan Guerrero and (Senior Associate Athletic Director/Senior Women’s Administrator) Petrina Long for giving me this opportunity and for supporting my vision for the future of the program.” Sealy helped Hawai’i to a berth in the National Semifinals in 2009. The Rainbow Wahine recorded their second-straight, 30-win season last year, going 32-3 overall. They also posted a 16-0 mark in conference play to earn their 14th-straight Western Athletic Conference title and went on to claim their 10th-consecutive WAC Tournament championship. Sealy’s record during his tenure at Hawai’i was 119-19 (.862 winning percentage). Prior to his stint at Hawai’i, Sealy coached for four seasons at UCLA, where he was an assistant on the men’s side from 2003-2006 and an assistant for the women’s volleyball team in 2005. In his lone season on the women’s side, the Bruins posted a 20-11 record and advanced to the Regional Semifinals. With the UCLA men, Sealy was 91-38 (.705) during his four campaigns, helping the Bruins to an NCAA Championship in 2006 and an NCAA Runner-Up finish in 2005. Sealy was also a volunteer assistant with the Cal State Northridge men’s volleyball team in 2000 before working in the same capacity with the UCLA men in 2001. One of the top setters in UCLA history, Sealy was a four-year letterwinner with the Bruins from 1990-93 and ranks fourth in Bruin annals in assists (4,749). In his senior season, Sealy and the Bruins won the program’s 14th National Championship, going 24-3. The team captain was named the co-Most Outstanding Player of the 1993 NCAA Tournament and also earned ASICS/Volleyball Monthly Player of the Year and AVCA All-American first-team honors. In addition, Sealy was named an All-American in 1991 (first-team) and 1992 (third-team), as well as All-Conference three times. The Bruins won three conference titles during Sealy’s playing days, going 80-24 (.769) during his four years. Following his playing career in Westwood, Sealy went on to play professionally in Switzerland, Belgium, Holland and Puerto Rico. He also played with the U.S. National Team in 1994 and 1997. Sealy graduated from UCLA in 1993 with a degree in physiological science.
