Course#Introduction

!

This!course!is!structured!for!students!interested!in!pursuing!a!university!education.!

The!course!is!designed!to!develop!student!appreciation!and!understanding!of!major!

themes!and!movements!in!European!History.!The!class!features!characteristics!of!an!

introductory!University!level!History!course:!weekly!readings,!lectures,!seminars,!

tutorials,!debates,!a!mid@term!and!final!examination.!Students!enrolled!in!Advanced!

Placements!courses!will!be!preparing!for!the!College!Board!AP!European!History!

Students!will

# be!expected!to!meet!both!the!Ontario!Ministry!of!Education!standards!

for!Grade!12!University!level!West!and!the!World!and!AP!standards.!There!is!an!

expectation!that!students!will!develop!a!critical!understanding!of!the!chronology,!

major!developments,!people!and!events!from!the!period!beginning!in!the!late!

Middle!Ages!(approximately!1450)!through!to!the!present.!Students!will!focus!on!

the!political,!intellectual,!economic,!social,!cultural,!military!and!diplomatic!history!

of!the!last!six!centuries.!

As!this!course!is!designed!to!reflect!a!University!level!History!course!students!are!

expected!to!increase!their!depth!of!focus,!efficiency!and!critical!analysis!skills!in!a!

Unit#Tests#and#Practice#AP#Exam#

The!unit!tests!are!a!shorter!version!of!the!College!Board!format,!consisting!of!a!

multiple@choice!section!and!an!essay@writing!section.!!Each!unit!test!covers!the!most!

recent!time!periods!studied!and!contains!30!multiple!choice!questions.!!The!essay!

questions!are!chosen!from!prep!books!and!previous!AP!European!history!

examinations,!and!like!them,!consist!of!a!DBQ!and!a!choice!of!two!other!thematic!

essays.!!

The!practice!AP!exam!is!equivalent!to!a!final!exam!for!this!class!and!is!given!in!late!

April.!!It!follows!the!College!Board!AP!European!History!exam!format!precisely,!

giving!the!students!an!opportunity!to!practice!for!the!real!exam.!!It!contains!80!

multiple!choice!questions,!followed!by!a!free@response!section!with!one!Document@

Based!Question,!and!two!thematic!essays!(out!of!a!choice!of!six!thematic!essay!

questions).!

with!evidence!and!skill!in!synthesizing!information.!Students!must!work!toward!
