Introduction
Many modern day process systems requiring
overpressure protection involve significantly
larger relief requirements and set pressures that
exceed the maximum limits as shown in API
Standard 526 for pressure relief valves. For these
applications, the most common solution has been
to design the relief system with multiple, smaller
orifice pressure relief valves that can be set within
the limitations of API Standard 526.
The use of API Standard 526 valves can add
significant cost to the relief system since multiple
pressure relief valves result in increased weight as
well as added inlet and discharge piping costs.

Relief Valves provide a cost-effective
alternative to multiple high pressure,
smaller orifice valves. The combined
resources of Anderson Greenwood/Crosby
provides over 25 years of proven
experience in the development, design and
application of Block Body Pressure
Relief Valves. Proven performance in
the most severe environments such
as The North Sea – has earned the
trust of our customers.
BlockBody pressure relief
valves provide greater capacity
and can be set at pressures
significantly higher than the
traditional design, cast steel
API Standard 526 relief valves.
These valves are ideal for high
pressure applications since
multiple high pressure, small
orifice valves can be replaced
by fewer or in some cases, a
single BlockBody valve.
The BlockBody design also adds significantly to
the scope of materials that can be provided in
accordance with ASME Code Section VIII by
adding a wide array of wrought materials. By
utilizing the BlockBody design, higher material
integrity is offered which can minimize nondestructive examination (NDE) requirements.
BlockBody Relief Valves can be designed to
unconventional sizes. This can be an advantage
when retrofitting to existing systems. Pressure
relief valve outlet sizes can be increased beyond
API standards to eliminate outlet piping reducers
and mitigate built-up back pressure in the
downstream piping.

Features and Benefits
Geometrically Designed Body
and Bonnet
• Eliminates the need for specifying multiple,
smaller orifice cast steel API Standard 526
pressure relief valves. One single block body
installation has satisfied the capacity of
twelve API Standard 526 valves.
• BlockBody design provides significant weight
reduction when compared to multiple
smaller orifice PRVs.
• Inlet and discharge piping costs can be
significantly reduced.
• Less downtime and maintenance
• Fewer spare parts required
Availability of Specific Inlet/Outlet
Flange Configurations and
Combinations
• Unique center-to-face dimensions to meet
existing system dimensions.
Forged Body Standard Construction
Increases spectrum of materials available for
harsh service or corrosive service applications.
• Availability of state-of-art metallurgy.
• Suitable for backpressure applications
considerably beyond CI 300 service.
Large Installed Base
• Reliable and field proven design.

* JOS-E/JBS-E BlockBody valves are provided with Interference Fitted Inlet Studs
The valve housing (body, bonnet and cap) is typically
manufactured from forged or other wrought materials.
The body and/or bonnet are manufactured from a
geometrically reduced block for additional weight
reduction.
Fully rated outlet connections up to Class 2500# are
available.
Unless otherwise stated, all JOS-E/JBS-E BlockBody relief
valves are supplied with a bolted cap as a consideration
for high pressure applications.
Anderson Greenwood/Crosby BlockBody valves
are manufactured in
accordance with ASME
Boiler and Pressure Code,
Section VIII and relieving
capacities are certified by
the National Board of Boiler
and Pressure Vessel
Inspectors.
Pilot Operated Valves
The use of a forged block main valve body
allows the user to take even more advantage
of the many pilot operated pressure relief
valve benefits.
Available designs include:
Snap Action (gas service): 200-BLK
Modulating Action (gas/liquid/multi-phase
service): 400-BLK, 800-BLK
Sizes:
1 x 2 to 8 x 10
Orifices: D (0.110 in2) to T (26.0 in2)
[0.710 cm2 to 167.7 cm2]
and full bore orifices from
1.32 in2 to 39.0 in2
[8.52 cm2 to 251.6 cm2]
The pilot operated pressure relief valve
features of providing higher set pressures,
handling excessive back pressures and having
the highest capacities per inlet size are well
known. Oftentimes a fabricated main valve
assembly with welded-on connections is
needed to satisfy the conditions. This use of
our BlockBody configurations can help
minimize the special NDE requirements.
With the BlockBody design the
available materials of construction are
widely expanded to handle
the harshest lading
fluids.
Inlet Ratings*: ANSI Class 150 through
2500, API 5,000# and
10,000#
Outlet Ratings: ANSI Class 150 through

Series 800
Set Pressure: To 10,000 psig [689 barg]
Back Pressure: To 6,170 psig [425 barg]
* BlockBody valves are provided with interference fitted inlet studs.
80 Series Spring Loaded
Pressure Relief Valves
For those severe applications where you
desire premium tightness for thermal relief or
other smaller relief capacity requirements we
now offer our 80 Series product in the
BlockBody configuration.
Available designs include:
Gas Service: 81-BLK, 83-BLK
Liquid Service: 81P-BLK
Sizes:
1/2” x 3/4” to 2” x 3”
Orifices: 0.049 in2 to 1.287 in2
[0.316 cm2 to 8.303 cm2]
Inlet Connections*:
NPT, Tubed, ANSI and
API flanged
Outlet Connections: NPT, ANSI flanged
Set Pressure: To 10,000 psig [689 barg]
Back Pressure: To 6,170 psig [425 barg]
* BlockBody valves are provided with interference fitted inlet studs.
The 80 Series pressure relief valves use
resilient soft seats up to set pressures of
10,000 psig [689 barg]. The use of soft
seats in the corrosive applications that our
BlockBody designs are often used provides
additional safety and environmental
protection.
The use of the 81P-BLK design allows for
much higher back pressures than a typical
bellows valve. As is normally the case a unique
high pressure outlet connection is specified.
The BlockBody concept once again provides
the flexibility in meeting strict material
specifications and piping envelope
dimensions.
