Support the Friends as they work to support the library! Slater Nite Hawks in a Book! Join us Thursday, October 10 at 6 p.m. for a special program featuring author Michael Wellman. Wellman’s latest work of historical fiction takes place in Iowa and has several excerpts mentioning Slater and our own Nite Hawks. Don’t forget to Trickor-Treat at the library during Beggar’s Night in Slater on October 31st from 6-8 pm! As a boy he often visited Slater for Sunday supper at the home of his grandmother, Anna Ersland Hillestad, and in Versus the Demons the story of Shorty Irslund runs right through the heart of town, highlighted by the big game in 1948 between the Nite Hawks and Shorty’s Snooseville Spent Hens from the eastside of Des Moines that christened the new lights at Slater’s ballpark. Excerpt: “Lots of folks made the short trip to Slater from time to time for extended family potlucks, including us Irslunds, and Slater was becoming a baseball hotbed. The town team there already had made a name for itself on the well-regarded Iowa semipro circuit and the high school team was the perennial best in Story County. In 1937 the Slater boys even beat the defending state champs from Des Moines North to advance to the state tournament. I think three things most attracted Norwegians to the game: dirt, spring and spitting. The hardy settlers along Skunk Creek in the mid-19th century hailed from a wintry land. But their first winter here tested them and their resolve to plant and stay in a new world. When they later accepted the challenge to a game of baseball from the neighboring village of Cambridge before the turn of the next century, it must have seemed like a fitting way to celebrate the annual resurrection of the land.” Author Michael Wellman Inside this issue: New Library Items 2 Book Reviews 3 Holiday Happening 4 Book Club 4 Christmas On Main 4 Library Programs 4 Page 2 New Adult Titles New Youth Titles The Liberty Amendments by Mark Levin. I like this particular book because it is similar to all of the other previous books put together in one book. In this book, kids try to rebel against weird videos that they have to watch about a singing calculator and a break-dancing dictionary. I definitely recommend this book to other kids my age. By: Liz Gifford Harvest … I have had too much Of apple-picking: I am overtired Of the great harvest I myself desired. Substitute “apples” for “pears” and you have my dilemma the last couple of weeks. The boughs, heavy with fruit, bent painfully toward the ground begging to be relieved of its beautiful burden. With the help of husband and grandson, baskets of pears were soon lined up on the porch. We ate fresh pears. I baked pear cookies and pear pies; I dried pairs and canned pears. Finally, I said, “Enough!” I phoned a friend who soon arrived with two children in tow and carried away tubs filled with pears. I was glad to see those pears go. Sharing the harvest: that’s a joy of an orchard. No orchard? Share a laugh. Share your talent, your time, your plants, your recipe, your toys, your ideas. Share a book. You knew, dear reader, I’d get around to books and the Library, didn't you. As the new chairperson of the Friends of the Slater Library, I am inviting you to come to the next meeting of the Friends on October 28th at 6:00. Being a part of the Friends of the Slater Public Library is a way to serve your community and become acquainted with some friendly, interesting people. The meetings provide an opportunity for you to share your ideas about the Library’s programs, facility improvements, and books. Please join us! ------My long two-pointed ladder’s sticking through a tree Toward heaven still, And there’s a barrel that I didn't fill Beside it, and there may be two or three Apples I didn't pick upon some bough. But I am done with apple picking now. You won’t want to miss out on this great event! Book Club This month’s book club selection is Nothing Daunted by Dorothy Wickenden. Discussion is scheduled for Thursday, October 24 at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Overview: In the summer of 1916, Dorothy Woodruff and Rosamond Underwood, bored by society luncheons, charity work, and the effete men who courted them, left their families in Auburn, New York, to teach school in the wilds of northwestern Colorado. They lived with a family of homesteaders in the Elkhead Mountains and rode to school on horseback, often in blinding blizzards. Their students walked or skied, in tattered clothes and shoes tied together with string. The young cattle rancher who had lured them west, Ferry Carpenter, had promised them the adventure of a lifetime. He hadn’t let on that they would be considered dazzling prospective brides for the locals. Nearly a hundred years later, Dorothy Wickenden, the granddaughter of Dorothy Woodruff, found the teachers’ buoyant letters home, which captured the voices of the pioneer women, the children, and other unforgettable people the women got to know. In reconstructing their journey, Wickenden has created an exhilarating saga about two intrepid women and the “settling up” of the West. –Barnesandnoble.com Free Library Programs Storytime - Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. Early-Out Program - Oct. 16, & 30 from 1-3 pm *(EK - 6th grades, registration required) Card Making - Thursdays, all day, for all ages. *(Children must be accompanied by an adult.)
