FOREWORD
Every year the Office of Institutional Research, Planning, and Assessment surveys NVCC graduates. The Graduate Survey collects
information on graduates' jobs, salaries, and goals. The graduates are also asked to evaluate their academic instruction, instructors,
and College services and facilities. This information is summarized in the Graduate Survey Report, which is published every other
year.
In the second part of the survey, graduates provide their thoughts and opinions on what was best about their NVCC education, what
problems they experienced as NVCC students, and how the College could improve its services. Since these comments directly
address many of the issues the College is concerned with, all the comments from the 2001-2002 Graduate Survey are included in this
report.
In the 2003-04 academic year, 3,021 students graduated from the College. Of this group, 929 completed a Graduate Survey with
many students providing comments on their NVCC educational experience. Graduates had high praise for NVCC programs,
instruction, and staff. Although many expressed satisfaction with their NVCC education, some of the 2003-04 graduates also had
concerns about the College.
Two other OIR Reports, (No. 23-05, Evaluation of NVCC Instruction, Services, and Facilities: Class of 2004 and No. 24-05, Graduate
Survey Report: Class of 2004) provide a summary of the graduate survey findings.
Because the Graduate Survey is confidential, OIR has taken special precautions to ensure that survey responses and comments are not
linked to any graduate. Therefore, comments are presented only by campus. In addition, OIR has made some changes (e.g. spelling,
grammar) to the comments in order to enhance comprehension and protect student confidentiality. However, the editing was kept to a
minimum. Whenever respondents referred to a particular faculty or staff member, the name was deleted. If you have any comments
or concerns, please contact OIR at (703) 323-3129.

I was able to take some classes on Marine Corp Base Quantico where I was stationed while attending NVCC. This made it
very convenient for me to take college courses.
Instructors pay personal attention to each student. I had wonderful instructors and I received quality education.
The availability of campuses.
I really enjoyed the experience. I learned a lot in my education in college than I did in my four years in high school.
Some of the teachers really gave that extra help when needed.
Total teacher/ student interaction.
The courses I took helped me towards my major.
Knowledgeable professors, great opportunities, closeness to home, low cost, and convenience.
Cheapness of it.
My NVCC education was good preparation for transferring to GMU. It was affordable and the professors were helpful,
knowledgeable and approachable.
Availability of classes in evening hours in the area I graduated. Otherwise, with my full time job it was not possible to
complete an A.S. degree. Convenient campus location
It was affordable and provided me with the skills I wanted.
Computer labs were good. Most of the teachers in my major field of study were very knowledgeable and able to teach.
Location, accessibility, good English teachers and schedule also really good.
Personal contact with faculty and basis for college.
I was well prepared to attend a large 4-year university. I feel most NVCC faculty and adjuncts are excellent.
The smaller class sizes and all of the ADJ professors were excellent.
I really loved how understanding my professors where to my particular abilities. I loved the small classes and a lot of hands
on experience. I choose to stay at NOVA instead of transferring to Mason.
Class schedules.
The course and programs were perfect
Massage program was excellent
I had a B.B.A in accounting before attending NVCC.
The experience I received. NVCC prepared me for the next level.
Mr. X in speech rocks. Mr. X - from Boston. He's able to communicate well. He's a good judge on grading and group work. He
inspires instead of aggravate, bore, or depress.
I enjoyed the small class sizes, which allowed a more personal relationship between the teachers and students.

Question 1: What Was Best About Your NVCC Education?
I liked some of the instructors (Mrs. X - Eng). They were very considerate and helpful.
Class section (time and having many choices). Financial aid was great.
There were a few exceptional instructors that went out of their way to use their training and skills to recognize a potential
student that needed a little help.
The convenience of having school close to home. I had two excellent professors: Dr. X and Professor X. They taught the ADJ
program at Woodbridge.
It allowed me to advance to a 4-year institution.
It was a transitional step between high school and university.
Courses offered cost and timing of offered courses.
It was closer to home.
As an adult returning to school and working most of the time I really appreciated the faculty understanding of the challenges. I
also felt the number of courses, days and times in addition to its convenience to my home.
I graduated.
Instructors at Alexandria were subject matter experts.
I reached my goal to finish my Associate degree.
The diversity of the people.
My program offered instructions (lab) beyond my expectations. I always had individual help from teachers when needed.
The instructors.
I was enrolled in network security certificate program. It was superb, as good as the graduate program. I had just completed
at RPI. NVCC should be proud of these courses and faculty who designed and teach in this program.
Received degree at my own pace.
The instructors were the best piece of my NVCC experience. Specifically, the following instructors were outstanding and
inspiring: X X; X X; X X; X X; X X; and X X.
I thoroughly enjoyed the option of the internet courses. This is the only way that I was able to complete my Associates degree
with being in the Army.
Accessibility-being on-line.
Professors teaching.
It was night classes and the school accepted relevant parts of my military experience and education.
I liked the fact that I could attend most of the classes I needed on base. I believe I only had to drive north for 2 classes.
Professionalism of instructors.
The smallness of the school and classes really helped with personal, 1 -on- 1 attention. The teachers really cared. My math
professors were the best!

Question 1: What Was Best About Your NVCC Education?
I love NVCC. It was a great experience. I hope to send my children there some day. It prepared me for my goals of attending
a four-year university.
I liked the professor and the class projects. I also liked the foreign language week, food and dresses of various people.
It was easily accessible because I took most of my classes aboard Quantico Marine Corp Base.
The law enforcement related topics.
Instructors.
The required written projects helped me advance my writing and research skills which I use on the job.
Great ADJ teachers.
Cost and convenience.
Location, class schedules, and costs.
Availability of evening classes and variety.
Locations and times of classes offered.
It helped to advance me at work. It was also close to home and work.
Online classes and ELI gave me the opportunity to complete some courses and work full time.
The different programs available and the convenience of schedules for regular students and working adults to take courses.
The ELI department was great.
Extended learning institute. Working at my own pace. ELI allowing our local librarian to proctor my exams.

Question 2: What Were The Major Problems, If Any, In Your NVCC Experience?
A few teachers, although very well educated in their field were not good teachers. Sometimes takes a unique person to not
only attain a professional level status but also be able to teach others about the field they are in.
Academic advising was confusing. They gave conflicting information about the courses to take and when I would graduate.
Admissions office and counseling office. They were not very helpful
Asking different faculty advisors and getting different answers. Computer registration and your website are ridiculously
convoluted.
Class scheduling. Enlighten foreign students about the U.S. and give more career opportunities and American Educational
System financial aid.
Computer labs- computers crashing. Need more in depth instructors on the software. They taught the basics. Have to learn
more in-depth.
Counseling. I did not get enough to transfer to GMU.
Counselors were willing and able to provide advice when students knew what they wanted or knew where they were going,
but were less aid to provide direction in terms of undecided student exploring career options or providing career testing.
Course index/number is somewhat not transferred considerably in GMU. Two or 3 classes taken in NVCC is equal to 1 class
of 3 credits in GMU.
Course materials were poor; program was poorly managed, and needs a better understanding of training requirements.
Courses are not challenging. Honors courses, which might have been challenging, were not offered too much and not at all
during the semester.
The desks in the classrooms were meant for teenagers not for adults.
ELI and trying to contact my instructor.
Everything is ok.
Faculty and staff at the Manassas campus were below standard. Administrators and professors there are difficult to work with
and don't think outside the box very well. Exception was X in SOC.
Few early problems with registration and the constant rise in price.
Few parking spaces and some teachers did not care about students.
Few teachers did not teach. They just read the textbook.
Financial aid department is not friendly and helpful.
Fitting in my working schedule.
Funding for tools.
Getting an incomplete changed to a grade. It took over 4 months and delayed my graduation.

Question 2: What Were The Major Problems, If Any, In Your NVCC Experience?
Hard to communicate with certain people. Need to make financial aid documents and records easier to access and do a
better job of record keeping. It took me one year to receive my diploma.
Having some professors who did not care about their students and had no interest on enhancing the subjects taught. (Mrs. Xmath).
Having to walk so far in rain from the parking lot.
I always felt like I was just visiting and not fully comfortable understanding what happens on campus.
I am disabled and I have a handicap place and received constant problems with either tickets or harassment from campus
police.
I believe one of the major problems I observed in NVCC is that most of the students are not aware of the learning services
and resources available to them. There wasn't much help in directing the students in their future careers.
I did not study enough, but other than that, it was great.
I had a lot of problems finding a counselor to talk to about what classes to take and even if I managed to talk to one, some of
them were not knowledgeable about the diversity of programs that NVCC offers and what curriculum to follow for a transfer
student.
I had only one suggestion. By the year I left, you installed online registration for classes, "You have the right stuff."
I had three professors (2 in summer sessions and 1 in fall session). All were terrible.
I personally had several experiences with the administration office that were kind of unpleasant. Some of the employees
were, in some cases, rude and impolite. That's the part that distressed me the most about NOVA.
I think the major problems were the library was closed on Sunday when I needed it more and parking enforcement. I think
tickets are very expensive. At the bookstore the textbooks were expensive and when I sold them back, they paid me less
than 10%.
I was especially discerned by the reading material and saw a need for censorship on that aspect.
In my major, Civil Engineering Technologies, we did not conduce any soils lab experiments, and hardly any concrete lab
experiments, although the labs were supposed to be part of the courses
It was a big problem with the telephone registration, but after NOVA implemented the online registration facility, this is no
longer a problem.
It was difficult to form a relationship with any professors and counselors.
It was not the case of a problem with NVCC, it's the working world. After I received my certification in Acquisition and
Procurement, the working world wanted on the job experience more than school taught experience.
Just wished that classes were not so late and that more of them would start at or between 4:00 and 5:30.

Question 2: What Were The Major Problems, If Any, In Your NVCC Experience?
Lack of cultural and international awareness in general education requirements. Insufficient course distribution and
organization.
Lack of office hours for business office and admin/records departments. I think part-time evening students get 4 hours even
though we represent 80% of the students. Cafeteria needs more hours.
Lack of student activities and overall social experience.
Lack of supervised direction-meaning students should have an academic advisor whom they meet with before registering for
classes to ensure graduation.
Long lines for registration and parking permits.
More lighting at NOVA- Alexandria campus (parking spaces above the bookstore).
More parking enforcement officers.
My academic advisor was not as helpful as I had hoped.
My grade point average was affected by the U.S. history class. I had A's in all classes with a C in history class, which the
professor was an elective.
My major problem was attendance and then parking became a hassle. It wasn't so much the actual looking for a parking
space as it was the mandatory "place your sticker here only"; where we were supposed to put our stickers was a pain.
My major problem was with the counselors. Every time I spoke to a counselor about a specific problem, they each gave me a
different answer, to the same problem.
My part time accounting was a really bad instructor, in terms of not knowing the course material. Every time I went to pay
tuition the system was down. I was unable to use lab facilities during holidays like spring break.
My problem was it was taking entirely too long to obtain an Associates degree. The length of classes for both regular terms
and ELI courses needed to be shortened.
No mentors to help guide me through.
No support for career.
Professors X, X, and X - unfair grading. Being set up as an accomplice to a marijuana transaction in the parking lot in May 04
and being jailed from January to March 05.
Non-PC based online registration.
None. It would be better if you renamed the college to Alexandria college or Annandale college. The word community
degrades the educational quality in other people's eyes.

Question 2: What Were The Major Problems, If Any, In Your NVCC Experience?
Not enough attention for special needs. For example, a fellow classmate needed assistance of a counselor but the counselor
was never available so she dropped out because of it.
Not enough computers at computer labs. Books were too expensive and some times we didn't use them, because teachers
gave their own notes.
Parking.
Parking.
Parking.
Parking and some of the long hours at night. Some professors kept you there up until 10:00 pm. I think class hours are very
long for people who work all day.
Parking, the cafeteria food, and the cost of the books.
Parking was a major issue and the fact that at certain times of the semester and during the day, the counseling center was
overcrowded.
Parking was a problem at some campuses.
Parking. Classes were crowded or the classroom was too small to accommodate the class size.
Parking. Parking is both limited and expensive. With all the expenses associated with attending NVCC, a break in parking
fees may be nice.
Poor library. This affected me more as an instructor than as a student. As a student, I ended up getting a degree although it
wasn't my initial goal. However, I never received the diploma or any instructions as to how to obtain it.
Poor maintenance of bathrooms.
Putting out false personal information on students without notifying them. Ticketing of my car too much. When one is taking
their finals they run a little longer than expected and the student cannot get up and put money in meter.
Registration.
Registration at Alexandria campus is and was horrible. They were very rude.
Registration office was not very helpful. Counseling was very limited, not well informed, and causing confusion.
Some instructors.
Some math courses were not as available as they should have been. Few upper level courses. Counselors need to offer
more proper advice.
Some people at the business office have bad attitudes and are rude.
Some professors had difficulty speaking English.
Some teachers are not sensitive to different cultures, especially the Hispanic culture. There was little reference to authors or
theories from overseas.
Some teachers were not returning phone calls or e-mails.

Question 2: What Were The Major Problems, If Any, In Your NVCC Experience?
Somewhat out dated computer software.
Mr. X is a very negative individual. He does not use a textbook to teach computer program design. He seems to think he has
the best way to show students how program design works. He is sadly mistaken. I would not want him to teach my child.
Teachers a little weak in technical aspects, like the latest Macintosh software.
Teaching quality is low.
The absence of an international student advisor at the Alexandria campus. Each time I had a question, the people at the
admission and records office gave me a different answer. The staff there does not have adequate information.
The academic advising department is seriously lacking and provides more of a disservice too many students. With the
exception of Ms. X, most advisors I encountered were not knowledgeable in basic areas of information or gave
contradictory/wrong information.
The admission and records services are very poor. There is always a long line and they do not like to answer their phone.
Many times when I called, I had to wait forever and most of the times, they didn't answer at all. They just let it ring and ring.
The advisory staff is, at best, incompetent, and at worst, deliberately wrong about many degrees requirements and transfer
credits.
The books at the bookstore are entirely too expensive. Students are forced to buy their books off the internet or from other
students.
The counseling office was unbelievably incompetent. Each time you would make a visit to an advisor, you are told a different
thing.
The counselors (academic advisors) are overwhelmed with a lot of students looking for help. That caused a long waiting time
for me to talk with an advisor or a counselor.
The instruments used in the lab for the concrete and soil mechanics classes were unreliable, and in some cases there were
not enough for each student.
The library and computer labs need improvement.
The major problem I have is with the bookstore. The bookstore's prices are outrageous for me being a NOVA student and
working part time. I can't afford those prices. So, I borrow the text book and make copies or if I need the entire book I will just
buy it and share.
The preparation for English class; English composition 111,112 and do homework assignment that was required.
The problem was students talking during lecture and in the beginning of the degree program. People were disruptive despite
the instructors yelling at the students to be quiet. The classes were beginning of the degree program.
This college as well as most. NOVA spends too much time and effort on diversity of interest and not enough in base
instruction. I was lacking in writing skills in my "college level" English class. Are you going to "push them through" like the
high schools did?
Tuition was very expensive for international students. Books are costly as well.

Question 2: What Were The Major Problems, If Any, In Your NVCC Experience?
Unable to get all information for professional schools.
Unfair grades from some instructors.
Unfortunately, I had a professor while taking ESE II, where I got nothing out of this class and later when I took ESE III at
Mason, I struggled big time. I will never forget that. I still feel the weakness. That was a base class for computer science.
Wasn't notified when I signed up to be program placed that I had chosen a "vocational study" with a zero transfer rate to area
colleges and universities. No help regarding transferring.
When a teacher was bad he/she could destroy my grades and my life. Needs more teachers with specialty.
Writing.
Yes. My transfer request was lost twice. From Annandale campus to Alexandria. Looks like there is no communication
channel or just simple negligence in some areas. I made three trips to the administration office and nobody knows what
happened!
Almost failing a class!

Question 2: What Were The Major Problems, If Any, In Your NVCC Experience?
Maybe NVCC can have an organized childcare center. Times of classes-moms would like to go to school between 9:30 - 3:00
and camp hours in the summer.
Second calculus And second chemistry teachers were horrible, especially the chemistry teacher. I couldn't understand his
accent and he didn't teach well at all.
A 1-year degree took 2 ½ years to get because certain classes were only offered during certain semesters and most classes
are offered at the same times on the same days, only 1 time/day a week, and most were not offered during the summer
semester.
A few of the nursing instructors were very mean and not helpful in any way.
A glitch in the student-aid process that took several months to resolve.
Ability to get into registrar office, hours for the business office, and registration.
Admissions and records department could have been brighter when it comes to their job.
Admissions and records employees were rude. I had trouble with NOVA connect.
Admissions and records office is horrible. I have never had so many problems before. I graduated in May 2004. My degrees
were not available until December 2004. I was not able to obtain a complete transcript until October 2004, which delayed my
transferring.
Advising me what to do.
After graduation the departments should be aware of my graduation status, rather than continually sending financial
information to my house.
Annandale classrooms are cold!
As far as I remember, they did not have a +/- grading scale, which did hurt my GPA once.
Assessment of transcripts from other colleges. Even NVCC quarter/ to semester credits I had to re-do and got two different
results. I never bothered with rest of university credits because of this.
Availability of classes.
Biology-uneven level of teaching
The bookstore. When you return a book you don't even get half of the price you paid for.
Bookstore.
Campus parking office gave unnecessary tickets. Very upsetting. Staff is rude. Parking decal was stolen twice.
Certain teachers were inefficient or harsh.
Cheating that was seen and not dealt with by professors.
Cheating classmates and not being able to get into certain classes because they fill so fast. Nursing students hours and
courses only were offered 1 time per year or certain days (ex. Lectures on Mondays).
Class availability.

Question 2: What Were The Major Problems, If Any, In Your NVCC Experience?
Classed filled quickly and not enough sections.
Classes need to be upgraded and equipments are not updated.
Communication and overall accountability. When I entered NVCC, my scores for my English Placement Test were lost.
Diplomas were lost and no one knew why. With a small number of engineering grads, it would have been very easy to call
them and let them know.
Computer and math classes need to be 15-20 min per class longer in duration. Many times professors cover too much
content to be effective (especially in programming classes). There is very little help during office hours. This is an across-theboard observation.
Computer lab wasn't open until midnight. Needed more extended hours in library.
Conflicting information from staff, especially when dealing with graduation.
Confusing and poor academic advising-not from my major/department advisor but from the advising/counseling center.
Couldn't get an advisor to answer messages (General Science -Associates.) I wanted to complete my Associates in General
Science so transferring would be easier. I was told I had enough credits in the counseling center, but could never get a
verification or recommendation.
Counseling and course planning.
Counseling and faculty.
Counseling center did not seem to have the time. I felt more knowledgeable about my career path than they and even front
desk services were unorganized.
Counseling lacks clarity and isn’t too helpful
Counseling or advisors didn't help at all.
Counseling and advising.
Cramped and crowded open computer labs and inconsistent models of computers
Custodial issues: Classrooms and bathrooms were disgusting most of the time. Transferring of credits is a huge problem.
Cafeteria food variation. Need more availability with advising.
Degree requirement changes. I had some problems applying for graduation and trying to find classes to substitute, so I
cancelled classes.
Despite taking a class to prepare me for Math-120 and passing. I still cannot get through Math-120. Otherwise I have a good
GPA and I am an honor student. This is my only remaining subject and it is preventing me from graduating from NVCC.
Did not find employment in field of surgical tech for 1 year after completion of the certificate for lack of experience, therefore I
returned to school to complete a General Studies degree.
Different text for the same class at different campuses, instructors who let classes out early, and when you screwed up my
graduation.
Difficult meeting with personnel to assist with problems.

Question 2: What Were The Major Problems, If Any, In Your NVCC Experience?
Direction for the freshman was not so clear
Disruptive students when they didn't want to be there.
Doesn't prepare you for 4-year institution.
Some of my classes wouldn't let me do extra credit to raise my grade because I have learning disability. Don't know what else
there is to tell you.
Driving far.
Each teacher teaches the same material differently.
Educational and personal counseling. People in administration office are not friendly. Sometimes, I can not communicate with
anybody in the office. Especially, at the Annandale campus.
The ELI courses I took did not set steady deadlines for material. Procrastinators always wait and do everything at end.
First, in admissions and records no one speaks English well. The registrar Mr. X was very rude to me and said I would never
graduate summa cum laude-but I did and earned the honors core (18 credits).
Faculty issues.
Faculty was not current with my specific professional programs and was never able to help with questions or concerns.
Faculty members of my program are not helpful and never had time for individual care in academic program.
Family trouble/ divorce, home like with mom, girlfriend problem, and few other friends.
Favoritism was sometimes shown, throughout, towards older students compared to younger students.
Financial aid was an issue and work study determination.
Finding a job in science. NVCC is a good educational institution but many of the students cannot land on a job easily. NVCC
has to have a contract with other companies who need workers with our qualifications.
Finding my own patients and not enough clinic time to complete requirements.
Financial aide and transcript evaluations.
Fitting in. When I started it was hard to find a friend in my class.
My application for international business in another university. After two years in NOVA I had a problem because there are a
lot of credit courses that I cannot transfer.
Frequent changes of textbooks. Low price of buying back used books from students.
General studies advising at the Woodbridge campus was so poor it caused me to switch home campuses to Annandale.
Cancellation of classes because of low enrollment.
Getting a correct advice about my classes and transferring. I had to stay an extra semester because of bad advising. Now
that I’m in Mason I found out that my degree does not transfer with all my credits.
Getting graduation papers signed and having to get them re-signed just before graduation.

Question 2: What Were The Major Problems, If Any, In Your NVCC Experience?
Getting my diploma after graduation.
Going a community college- it’s what I expected.
Going for clinical experience.
Graduation. A certificate and degree that I applied for were never put in correctly so I still have not received them.
Graduation/ classes needed to graduate two days before the end of semester I was told my academic advisor had added my
credits wrong and I was a short of graduating. I was told some of the advisors were just slacking off.
Having classes I wanted to take at days and times I couldn't and because I have been working full time for a long time, it took
me longer to graduate.
Having to work full time while I attended NVCC was the only major problem.
Having transcripts transferred to Mason, the transfer to Mason in general, and the lack of academic guidance and direction.
Health Information Technology is a small program. Changes in the schedule of classes created some problems, but with the
help of the instructors and advisors I was able to work out the conflicts.
Horrible counselors were in too much of a rush to get through each student.
I chose Architectural Drafting, but I’m not sure I can get a job.
I can not find a job yet in my present field of study. (Real Estate as a trainee)
I did not encounter any major problems at NVCC except the parking shortage in Alexandria campus.
I did not have a pleasant experience with the parking services at Alexandria campus. The people in charge were very
unfriendly. The appeal process took over a month and the food in the cafeteria was not that good.
I didn't like most teachers’ methods of teaching. Some didn't care about what grades they give.
I got lost in paperwork. Advisement was difficult (ex. No one to ask about new course of study) therefore once I saw the dean
of my studies to graduate, I learned I was not finished with my studies. This huge problem could have been prevented.
I had problems at the computer lab and at the library. Staff were not ready to help.
I had some difficulty doing online enrollment the first couple of times I had to use the new PeopleSoft system.
I had the same teacher for most of my classes. I did not experience a variety of teachers or their methodologies and
experience.
I had two disappointments. The attitude of the teachers that made me drop a computer class and the lack of teaching skills of
some of your teachers in the international business class.
I had trouble financially and I didn't have anyone to help me. I almost withdrew. The current plan is really helpful for students.
I received no assistance in planning my transfer to Management. The info in the counseling center is misleading.

Question 2: What Were The Major Problems, If Any, In Your NVCC Experience?
I think instructor office hours are not flexible enough for people who work day time to meet instructors during evening.
I took 4 classes in which the majority of the text was on-line. This required me to spend extensive time in the computer lab.
There were signs advising students to be quiet, but many times rude and unruly students would disrupt my studies.
I wasn't considered for a grant during the summer clinical session when I attended 40 hrs a week for 10 weeks. This was
considered a less than half time student. The summer clinical session is required to graduate and it was a struggle financially.
If there is a problem several times people have to go to several different departments for solving it. Sometimes it takes more
than 1 to 3 hours. There are several classes needed for graduating from NVCC but they are not transferable.
In my particular field, Network Administration, there was very little hands on with hardware used in this field. I never even got
to see a single switch router used in networking. This was a big negative when finding employment after graduation.
Inadequate course content and description.
Instructors in nursing program often did a below average job of instructing classes.
Introduce students to factory volunteer positions to practice their career.
It took 3 semesters to get my diploma after I submitted my application because no one could find a problem and when they
did, they didn't tell me all at once. They said "Oh you need to take this" and then the next semester they said, "Oh well you
still can't graduate.”
It took two and a half years to receive my diploma. Even then, it required me taking a day off work to go to the campus to pick
it up. Ridiculous.
Knowing the cut-off dates for transfers, graduations, etc.
Lab equipment for science majors.
Lack of flexibility with class hours. No night time offered.
Lack of funding prevents the MLT program from having realistic laboratories. They are sadly out of date and lacking in hightech equipment.
Lack of instructor response on ELI courses.
Lack of parking services and advisors.
Lack of strong programming skills.
Limited parking.
Low aptitude students are mixed with high aptitude students. Professors try to accommodate some students causing the
whole class to slow down.
Maintenance of the buildings is poor. There was no a/c in the early summer and cold in the winter.

Question 2: What Were The Major Problems, If Any, In Your NVCC Experience?
Math professors who were not very good at teaching. For example, I had a multivariable calculus professor who would write
information on the board and a while later correct himself. This confused students and happened more than often.
Meeting with counselors and getting answers. Online things, such as applying for transcripts, was not available but how were
students suppose to know.
Misinformation about the graduation ceremony
Misinformation for courses needed for a degree. ELI grades were not recorded in the proper system during the day.
Misinformation and misunderstanding about credits needed to fulfill program requirements. I ended up taking some credits
that were not accepted by my program of study.
My academic advisor failed to inform me that I needed to take an IT class as a requirement for my liberal arts major. When
she told me during my last semester, I had to sign up for a computer class on Saturdays at the last minute.
My last IST course. I took the first section in Annandale and the second section in Woodbridge. The second section was far
more advanced than what I had learned in the first section. Very hard and very class appointing.
My major problem occurred when I was during discussion in math class. The instructor was very intimidating and overbearing
at the time. I do not remember his name.
Near the end of my graduation a lot of courses were being taken away.
Need more classes offered in the evening. Need more clarification for ELI classes. If you weren't in a classroom, the
instructions and deadlines weren't real clear.
Never encountered any problem.
No library services on Sunday
No major problems, just some annoyances when faced with the disorganization within the ASL department.
No parking.
Not being able to find a parking space.
Not enough daytime classes in the healthcare fields.
Not enough handicap parking sometimes.
Not enough instructors in the Architecture program. I had the same instructor for 6 different courses. After a while, he became
judgmental. Also, some courses were taught only once a year. I had to leave before I got my Associates because I couldn't
wait around,
Not knowing what is needed by varying universities.

Question 2: What Were The Major Problems, If Any, In Your NVCC Experience?
Not knowing you needed an ID number to pay for class in person. I didn't find out until I was in line waiting to pay. A lot of
people didn't know about this ID number. Luckily the girl was nice enough to find out what it was.
Not qualifying for in-state, not to mention my husband being in the armed forces and having a home in the state of VA. We
paid taxes for 9 years (Property).
Not very impressed with counseling services.
Not very much, only career counseling.
NOVA was not an encouraging environment. NOVA needs to build a building where students can come to study (the library is
not a good place).
Nursing instructors with no skills, parking tickets, having to wait months to pick up a diploma, the cost of tuition, the people
who do registration, and if they spoke English, they were rude, and no help with picking classes from student services.
Obtaining information regarding upper level course requirements.
Obtaining solid answers to questions, like associate degree requirements.
Only problem was that I had to walk my advisor through my graduation requirements instead of the other way around!
Papers were turned in on time to receive diploma, attended graduation ceremony only to find my diploma could not be
received until fall reflecting an inaccurate gradation date.
Parking and walk to classes. There were a few worthless teachers.
Parking.
Parking.
Parking.
Parking.
Parking and distance to classes at Annandale.
Parking facilities.
Parking the first few weeks at Annandale.
Parking was always on issue. Counseling was usually bad and non-involved. Many times they did not have the answers
(faculty advisors).
Parking. Also every time I went to a counselor about classes, I would find out the person I talked to before had given
misinformation. This happened several times and led to me taking unnecessary classes and getting a different degree then I
probably should have.
Parking and inadequate computers in labs and classrooms.
Parking. I work full-time and it was always difficult to hunt for parking in the evenings.
Parking, the books were too expensive, and people in the administration and records office are very rude and had long lines.

Question 2: What Were The Major Problems, If Any, In Your NVCC Experience?
Parking, long lines at the bookstore, and registration
Parking and no payment plan for tuition.
Personally, I would have preferred more availability of Saturday class (I know they are very unpopular with most!) rather than
having to attend night class after working all day.
Prepare me for English.
Prices of used books were extremely too high.
Problem with GPA and instruction since I study at Germanna Community College and will receive degree from NVCC.
Quality of Nursing department and testing procedures.
Registering for classes. NOVA didn't have on-line registration while I was attending.
Registration.
Registration and many other activities related to applying for graduation didn't always go smoothly. Sometimes had to go to
the admissions office in person, which was inconvenient during the day, and the people working there are so slow.
Registration and parking.
Registrations steps at NOVA connect are very confusing.
Rude behavior by some of the administration.
Schedule of courses, on occasion, lengthened time to complete studies for degree. This was due to small number of students
enrolled in my program area and prerequisite requirements.
Scheduling. I was working full-time during the day-time and going to school in the evening.
Scheduling night courses.
Science labs and the entire science building at Annandale are pathetic! Chemistry/biology labs need thorough improvements.
The security personnel at Medical Education campus
Some IT instructors (not all) openly belong to the "no girls allowed" club.
Some lower level required courses could be somewhat "out of control" between faculty and students. It’s probably due to the
students’ immaturity though.
Some of my credits didn't transfer to GMU. Why? I took Statistics I and Oceanography I and a seminar on geographic
information systems. None of these were transferred and now I have to take them again.
Some of the instructors were bad. They were so bad as to discourage my interest in the subjects, which they taught. If not for
those terrible teachers I would have rated the faculty a whole much higher. Parking and the registration was difficult.
Some professors take a high school approach to teaching, including the basic assumption that students have no interest in
learning and are constantly looking for excuses to avoid work. This assumption is both incorrect and insulting.
Some of the teachers. In my first year at Annandale I was in health services. The setup and classrooms were horrible.
Second year at the new campus was excellent.

Question 2: What Were The Major Problems, If Any, In Your NVCC Experience?
Some teachers outside the program I completed were hard to communicate with.
Sometimes parking.
Staff advisor was not pleasant to talk to. I had to find out what needed to be done on my own.
Students are not friendly with each other.
Teacher availability. In one course the instructor was absent most of the semester, and another course had the most
incompetent instructor, whose lesson plan consisted of reading out loud from the book every class.
Teachers may be a little more sympathetic towards students with disabilities.
When the Medical Education campus opened that it was just classrooms for the students. None of the other services we
needed were there; like the bookstore, other student services, facilities and a cafeteria.
The advising was outdated. I was never instructed who to call at Mason but when I discovered it myself, I found the courses
I’d been told to take were incorrect (inconsistent with their requirements).
The bookstore was the worse experience that I had.
The career/counseling center really did not help in my undecided major. They mostly gave internet websites for reference
and offered little counseling.
The classes were over crowded and the teachers, at least most of the time, were unavailable for help.
The college didn't accept financial aide from private services.
The ESL department is very strict with their students (placement).
The lack of concern for students (though some teachers I loved!).
The lack of general student enthusiasm. I believe that NVCC should present a higher challenge to be accepted. Also, there
was one woman in the testing center who was perpetually unpleasant. Testing for me was hard enough without someone
else's bad attitude.
The library was rarely open when I could use it. Extended hours are needed especially for those that work.
The major problems were the financing. I was not granted in-state tuition even though my family was working for the State
Department.
The only problem I had was that I was unprepared for a 4-year college after NVCC.
The only problems I had were the ones I gave myself. NOVA/ NVCC gave me a good stepping stone and I needed that.
The parking.
The parking was very limited both at Annandale and Alexandria campuses. At Alexandria, the parking lot would be so full; I
would end up waiting and circling the lot for an hour. Annandale campus has only one large lot for the students.
The professors talked to fast and explained questions in away that only students that understood already could do the work.
The provincial attitude of the computer lab employees was highly irritating.

Question 2: What Were The Major Problems, If Any, In Your NVCC Experience?
The red tape you had to cut through to get paperwork done. Example: I graduated in 2004? I actually transferred to Ohio
Wesleyan University in 2003. I should've graduated by then.
The staff is not available at the end of the semester to handle any problems. It took me two years from my last class before I
received a diploma.
The temperature of the classrooms.
The volume of health care students is increasing rapidly. The availability of classes or programs is limited.
The weather policy for nursing on certain days didn't match with the schools policy. Classes were held at 9:00 am when the
school didn't open until 10:00 am. Also Miss X is very rude and would use language that was very unprofessional.
There was no problem, only with the admissions but they had helped me at the end.
There were a few professors that were very rude to me and other students I have made complaints already about them.
This is my problem; in biology the instructor went so fast- talking and writing a mile per minute. I'm taking notes so fast that I
missed the important points, then with all the charts the instructor puts up- I was missing things trying to keep up.
Times of clinicals (I know that can't be changed). Lack of organization of certain clinical professors. They should meet the
units personally and prepare them to receive students. Too many times we felt like a burden.
Timing of the course offerings.
Transcripts were a problem. A lot of credits I earned at NVCC did not transfer, but that is not NVCC's fault.
Transferring to a 4-year university and having my credits apply for my major.
Trying to get into the Nursing program. I ended up getting a degree in another health field because the wait was too long. I
missed my window and will now have to wait until my baby is a little older.
Trying to graduate. I applied four times and each time they said I didn't meet the requirements when I actually did meet them.
After the fourth time, I finally got my diploma.
Understanding the speech of foreign teachers and the resulting communication problems.
Unfortunately the English classes 111 and 112 were not taught the way I was expecting. The teachers were more concerned
on making the hours than teaching students the real lesson. I didn't learn anything new from those classes.
Unfortunately, the major problem in my time, 2002-03, was people who worked at the admission and records office. They
were so rude, very irresponsible, and prejudice. I was not happy at all.
Very little guidance when I first started to attend NVCC. I knew I wanted to study something related to criminal justice, but I
didn't know the name of the major or what classes to take. The counselors were awful at directing me in the right path.
Yes! The counselors were very misinformed. I and most other students I have talked to have all said the counselors told them
either wrong information or made them take classes that were unnecessary.

Question 2: What Were The Major Problems, If Any, In Your NVCC Experience?
Accounting.
Books were too expensive and a long wait for back ordered text books.
Careless attitudes of instructors and lack of seriousness.
Class availability.
Computer lab in design.
Counseling wasn't helpful at all.
Cultural understanding.
Desks too small. Should use tables and chairs. More user friendly.
Discrepancy with a parking ticket.
Due to an oversight in scheduling I did not graduate when expected. I already possessed a B.S. The fact that I needed more
language classes was over looked until too late. Instead of receiving an A.A. in 2003 I received an A.A.A. in 2004.
Finding internship opportunities was difficult for me.
Getting in touch with advisors.
Getting in touch with some members of the faculty.
I felt we needed more "hands on" experiences relating to horticulture and more field trips; more on-site plants relating to the
field; and more opportunities to apply learning.
I had a few problems with parking. My office paid for some of my classes and sometimes the parking office wouldn't know
how to handle it. Parking at Annandale is terrible at night.
I had some trouble initially, when I tried to get some classes, specifically the ELI class I took, to show up or my transcripts.
This was bad, since I was trying to transfer my credits to G.M.U.
I hate NOVA connect. Very difficult to navigate and the pathways are illogical. I know system has been "improved", but I have
been reluctant to try it since it is so frustrating.
I only had one major problem while attending NVCC. There was an instructor that was very partial to the traditional students
and would not assist, graded unfairly, and ignored the non-traditional students. The problem was taken care of at the end of
the semester.
I started off rough and got no good direction from counselors.
I think the biggest issue, and one that came after some reflection, is the lack of advisement. Embarrassing as this is, I spent
nearly 20 years pursuing an Associates degree. Given I changed my major 4 times; it would have been nice having someone
review my transcripts.
I would have liked some classes to be given at a closer campus.
In Loudoun campus some of the computer science courses were not up to the standard and need to be replaced.
Instructors were not good educators. They had the knowledge in the field but not the ability to communicate it in a teaching
setting. It was very frustrating for me when I took ELI because I needed to teach myself.

Question 2: What Were The Major Problems, If Any, In Your NVCC Experience?
Lack of cultural groups at NVCC Loudoun.
Learning about closings when had bad weather. Some of the rooms where too small for class size, especially in labs.
Lots of trouble having transcripts sent. I went through the proper steps and NVCC didn't fulfill their part. Also, they never sent
proof of my degree earned at NVCC to G.M.U.
Math was killing me. But once I met with Ms. X, math seemed easier and fun to learn.
Miscommunication regarding class waivers.
Mr. X advising was absolutely useless. The rest of the advisory personnel were great. He threw up road blocks that were not
accurate. History and IT course was unbelievably brutal.
My Associates degree was General Studies in Science. I thought this would cut out my general-ed requirements transferring
to G.M.U. but I still had to take at least one semester of math general-eds at G.M.U.
No - except for the admissions front desk woman named Ms. X, who was incompetent, rude, condescending, and extremely
unhelpful. She continued to give many people who approached her a very bad first impression of NOVA.
No “hands-on" experience in most of the computer courses that I took.
No major problems. One complaint I have is that NVCC did not accept my three years of high school Spanish to satisfy the
language requirements.
Not all credits transferred to G.M.U. I had to take 2 or 3 classes at NVCC to get transfer credit for one class at G.M.U.
Otherwise; I feel that the counseling could have been better and there needs to be more hands-on for some of the IT
courses.
Not being able to find/transfer records from my previous college because of a fire there. Also, my certificate for International
Business: some of the courses were cancelled without any notice (or very little) right before they were due to start.
Not being able to get the needed classes at a convenient time and at a close location. I couldn't take a lot of classes during
semesters needed because often classes not offered at close-by campuses.
Not enough classrooms and many of my classes were held in high schools.
Not enough focus on sustainable horticulture practices.
NOVA Loudoun. The light to enter campus was extremely slow and sometimes took me 3 lights to enter into the parking lot.
You can solve the present traffic problem if you focus on that. Math lab hours are inconsistent and inconvenient.
NVCC courses are not challenging at all compared to the ones in UVA. Honestly, when I transferred I felt like I went from
middle school to a good university. I did not feel prepared.
Officers in admissions at Loudoun campus are rude to students.
Only one professor and she stepped down.
Only that math was hard to come back to.
Parking and getting software installed in lab for course material.

Question 2: What Were The Major Problems, If Any, In Your NVCC Experience?
Parking.
Parking and the counseling office.
Parking at Loudoun campus
Parking lot.
Parking was always a pain.
Parking was terrible.
People at the registration office were rude.
Poor quality of ELI courses. Education and training provided at NVCC did not prepare me for career field.
Professors did the work and gave lecture, but I did not feel they got to know you. You could ask them more about the lecture
if they were on the topic but no deviation or more information on the topic to discuss.
Registering for an audit class- a ridiculous process that ultimately cost my 4.0 earned average over 100 credit hours due to
what was, essentially, a paperwork problem.
Registering for classes over the phone was frustrating.
Registration. An individual working at the desk was rude and unhelpful; she gives an impression that students are a nuisance
to her.
Registration difficulties, picking a degree (I had to go to Annandale and Loudoun twice to get it), and vehicle defacing.
Registration my final semester was very difficult.
Some adjunct teachers did not do a good job. Some computer problems. Two ELI professors did not take their job seriously
and provided zero feedback on any assignment.
Some people were not helpful and unfriendly especially in the counseling office.
Some teachers who were there forever (no longer).
Sometimes, I felt that I should not have expected to transfer to better university than George Mason, i.e., I felt "pushed" in
that direction.
Speech teacher Mrs. X actually fell asleep during speeches. Wasn't fair to all students.
Teachers that are monotone!
The amount of classes only offered at specific campuses. I wish each campus offered the same courses with some
exceptions. Parking was often hard to find as well.
The counseling department was nearly useless and did not provide any useful information.
The counseling service was horrible at Annandale. I would avoid it at all costs. They would try to put me on a career goal
path not of my interests. I switched my major a lot.
The counselors should make the right recommendation to students rather than misleading them in the future. The counselor
had made a mistake by having me take one additional course not required for my major. It cost me to delay my graduation.
The counselors trying to treat mature adults like recent high school graduates.

Question 2: What Were The Major Problems, If Any, In Your NVCC Experience?
The counselors were inadequate. Every time I went to seek advice on classes no one knew what they were doing
The Interior Design curriculum and faculty were quite weak.
The lady who handled the processing of my certificate. She was nasty when she called my home and she lost my form; but I
believe she did to be spiteful and mean. Once Dr. X intervened, she was forced to process my certificate.
The registrar's office and everyone in it was rude, disrespectful, and unhelpful (Loudoun campus). I have never been treated
worse by university employees. They are an embarrassment to NVCC.
The registration process in person has been a major hassle. The staff at Loudoun campus is rude and made registering
difficult. There were also several times when I received misinformation from them.
The staff and organization of the Vet Tech program.
The worst problem is the registration office. The workers there were racist. They put a lot of obstacles in the way of
registration that made me change my mind about studying in NVCC. I tested that, so I have a proof of some of the workers’
racism.
There was a problem with incorrect information about credits on the internet and I had to pay more money in order to
graduate.
There was little help available for deciding which courses to take for career development and little opportunity to interact with
other students and develop leadership skills.
Traffic getting to and from NVCC.
Trying to determine what classes to take and what order to take them.
Waiting list to get into the X-ray program.
When I had a psychology class at your institution, the professor that I had was not helpful tome in terms of my educational
experience.

Question 2: What Were The Major Problems, If Any, In Your NVCC Experience?
Three specific professors were extremely condescending to NVCC students. They all mentioned teaching at other
universities, belittled students, and made negative connotations regarding the NVCC colleges. I was not impressed.
A few instructors were not "up to par" with the material they were teaching and had a lack of enthusiasm.
Advising was a little weak when it came to post graduation planning.
Attendance. I worked full time and some classes made you come. Also, certain teachers made us do service learning which I
hated because of the extra curriculum scheduling. Keep it simple.
Biology.
Bookstore hours.
Bookstore hours. Some instructors strayed a little too much off the subject being taught. Sometimes I wanted just the facts.
Class offerings sometimes limited. ELI used as another option.
Counselors at Annandale campus are not always available for students.
Counselors were terrible.
Couple of bad teachers and I didn't like the teaching techniques.
Course availability and semester timing.
Course availability. I had to attend another campus to complete my degree program. I also attended a high school which
added to my commute.
Did not like a couple of professors and there was no alternative available at the location I desired.
Do not offer associate degree in Recording Technology.
ELI faculty fairness and availability. Science courses had poor labs. Some adjunct professors were indifferent to course
objectives and students ideas.
English, technical writing and ELI.
Getting my diploma, from the registrar's office.
Guidance was unaware of the correct degree for transferring music students. It's AAA not AA.
I did not encounter any continual major problems
I had different advice from counselors that I met with concerning what courses I should take to earn my Associates.
Just one bad faculty member.
Little to no help in advising. I had to follow the list assigned. If I had any questions or concerns, the counselors always
focused on trying to keep me at NVCC. I have to advise my brother during his current studies because counselors offer no
help.
Many professors were easy.
Meeting in a trailer in the cold.
My degree wasn't offered at NOVA, Diagnostic Medical Sonography.

Question 2: What Were The Major Problems, If Any, In Your NVCC Experience?
My last semester at NVCC required me to take classes that were considered second semester classes. Example: Spanish
202 and Math 152 were not offered at the Manassas campus so I had to attend Annandale and Alexandria campuses.
My problems are related with counselors. They had, almost always, a very tight schedule and I never got the right answer
from them. I understand their position, but their work was to understand me first, which they never did.
None---it's a definite worthy investment.
Not enough student involvement.
Not getting mid-term grades in time for withdrawals from classes, and having to compensate for instructors stubbornness.
Not offering the classes I wanted to fit in my schedule.
NVCC didn't teach UNIX, which is what Mason uses.
Parking during the day.
Parking was horrible. Teachers were not accessible and there was little student support from administrators.
Parking.
Parking and availability of classes for working students.
Parking. The bookstore needed to have better hours in the evening.
Registration by phone was awful. I spent ½ the day calling until I could finally get through.
Scheduling appointments with counselors. They were usually very busy and need more night time and weekend classes for
people who work.
Some instructors were hard to deal with.
Some instructors great and some poor. Get quality instructors. I learned more in an ELI class than in a classroom.
The counselors. It took me 4 years to complete my Associates and a lot was because the counselors did not help me prepare
my college career adequately.
The entire time I was at NOVA I was planning on transferring to G.M.U I went to get advised on the best way of doing this
multiple times and got different answers each time. I did a better job trying to find the information on my own.
The major problems I experienced were correctable.
The NOVA intro to NOVA type session course. I was told I need it, when I didn't, which wasted a lot of my time and your staff
time trying to get it in my last semester schedule.
The unprofessional attitude and characteristics of Mrs. X made me regret being at NVCC.
The work load and challenge of classes did not prepare me for a 4-year university. Also, most counselors and professors
assumed people that were transferring go to GMU. This was not my case and I feel there needs to be more of an effort to
help students transfer to other schools.

Question 2: What Were The Major Problems, If Any, In Your NVCC Experience?
A few instructors seemed to lack experience.
A mix-up with the billing office
Assistance with transferring to an on-line four-year college.
Balancing studies with my current job.
Biology teachers did not answer questions when asked.
Book store hours are not convenient for the working adult.
Books from the bookstore cost too much.
Class availability.
Class availability catered mainly to full time students- not the working professional. This wasted valuable learning time.
Counseling is not the best
Counseling. Most of the time I felt like I knew more than the counselor so I no longer subjected myself to that service.
Courses were not offered often, not enough evening teachers, and the study lab was not very helpful. Some of the
students had no idea.
ELI - communicating and timely communication was flat impossible. I took geography and dropped it, then asked if I could
go back in the class and the teacher said yes, but that was not so. For P.E. online "it appeared" that I was not doing my
work.
ELI requirements should be more flexible.
Finding a parking space and paying for parking.
Getting classes that were requirements to match work schedule.
Getting classes that will transfer.
Getting courses needed and my work schedule.
Getting help with my math course. Sometimes no one was available for help in the tutoring center.
Getting my credits to transfer to my 4-year college and getting my transcripts sent to my 4-year college.
Getting to the testing center and bookstore during limited hours.
Having classes at different campuses during the same day.
I believe there could be additional lighting in the parking areas. I took night classes and walked to my car late in the
evening. Security is an issue with the amount of wooded areas around the campus.
I can't think of any major problems. Sometimes there was a lack of parking spaces available.
I didn't like the parking. The price was going up each semester and no room for parking.
I found problems with the English department. I think it is more designed for full-time students. There is no flexibility in any
of the English classes I took.
I got a "0" on a non-make up test, simply because I mailed it out and the mail service did not get it to the teacher on the
due date.

Question 2: What Were The Major Problems, If Any, In Your NVCC Experience?
I had a bad experience with a history teacher at the Woodbridge campus and he wasn't fair to all the students.
I had a great experience. NVCC is the best.
I had a high opinion of NOVA but after one incident I realized this college is like all the rest; more interested in money than
its students’ education. It is difficult to summarize in a small space. Your education requirements are not consistent.
I had a problem with a math instructor. I went to the department head and I felt as though my complaint wasn't seriously
looked into.
I had a teacher for Survey of American Literature who soured my entire experience at NVCC.
I had some problems with NOVA-Net when it first came online, but that's to be expected with any new system like that until
the bugs are worked out.
I only took classes in Information System Technology to improve my computer skills.
I tried to use the tutoring service, but the person assigned to me was more suited to advanced math (calculus) using a high
tech calculator than the basic math formulas I needed. He quickly moved to frustrated and feeling as if I was wasting my
time.
Immature and disrespectful classmates and major problems with the process of sending final transcripts to transfer
institutions. Not the staff but paper work and electronic process inefficient.
Internet courses. For example, German.
Limited class availability and my faculty advisor were poor.
More classes during the summer.
More faculty advisors for international students and financial aid.
Most counselors don't know what they're talking about. The last semester I enrolled in was horrible.
Not enough parking.
Not enough parking meters.
Not getting transcripts sent on time and transfer credits getting messed up.
Not prepared for academic writing.
NVCC is so far to drive. It would be nice to have one closer to Stafford, VA. Some classes I would have liked to take were
in other campuses too far to get to.
Offer more classes one day a week. Some students have a hard time organizing their time to be able to take classes. This
was true more many military personnel.
Office hours for the instructors (typically instructors were not available other than class hours.) Library hours should be
until 10:00 p.m. College tuition, which has recently gotten high in recent semesters.
Parking at the beginning of the semester at Annandale.
Parking and classes that were locally to my former residence.

Question 2: What Were The Major Problems, If Any, In Your NVCC Experience?
Parking. You got tickets for stupid reasons and when you went to contest it no one was available to speak too.
Paying for classes.
Paying for parking may generate funds, however, students have little funding as it is. There must be an alternative method
to generate capital from other sources. The bookstore and the prices of books is really a problem.
Possibly a minor problem would be how credits transfer, since some are transferred as electives.
Telephone registration. The phone was always busy.
Text books price obtaining during store hours. The schedules of classes were often hard to meet with working class. The
selection of classes offered in computer security area and the computers used need updating.
The administration, specifically when I was in the process of graduating. The person in charge of that was extremely rude
and unhelpful. Graduating was a painful process
The counselors need more help. Twice, I was given false information causing me to take courses I didn't need. Also, I had
an instructor go on vacation for three weeks and then take another week off during the semester. I feel the four weeks was
for too much.
The hours (days) of the bookstore for evening school students. It was hard enough getting to class and then not being able
to get scantrons, supplies, etc., on the same evening.
The HVAC (air conditioning classes) start at 5pm and if you work in the field many people cannot set to class on time.
The science classes I needed were at Ft. Belvoir and not at Woodbridge, so I had to wait another semester to finish my
schooling here.
There are some faculty problems. They were unprepared and unorganized. It is often difficult to reach faculty members or
get them to return phone calls. I've taken ELI or online courses where the tests at the testing center were out of date.
There were a couple of instructors, from other four-year schools, that really treated the class like 2nd class citizens
because we were attending a 2-year school instead of going to their school. They were not fair in the grading practices.
This survey does not take into account students who are pursuing specialized programs of study who already have
graduated from college or who have graduate degrees.
Time to study, specifically for mature students.
Very bias politically left wing teachers. ELI teachers were slow to instruct but quick to expect.

Question 3: How Can NVCC Improve Its Instruction and Service?
An annual presentation of its services and increase student clubs common activities.
Better counseling and advising. I never received a full explanation of anything when speaking with an advisor or counselor.
Better open lab (photography) hours at the Alexandria campus more often. Computers, printers, and scanners should be
more available for students to use at Alexandria campus.
Bookstore hours.
By improving its course content.
By using Blackboard or WebCT more often and having the professors relate their subjects more to the real world and
current events. Show clips of movies and documentaries. Do not allow professors to only read off PowerPoint for
instruction.
Offer more programs to study test preparation courses for exams like SAT, GRE, GMAT, and LSAT.
Computer labs are generally crowded, when some open labs are reserved for classes, limiting the time and use of labs.
I've noticed some semesters there are course evaluations and other times not in some classes. Need more input from
students in regard to the class.
Continue evaluating instructors’ performance.
Coordinate curriculum so that students do not have to wait a whole year to take a course if they are not able to take it the
first time. I had to wait a whole year to take a course if I missed it.
Encourage returning adult students
Extend the times during the semesters for difficult subjects like math and English.
Financial aid officials seem to not have much knowledge about their job.
Fix your website.
For ELI students, find a way to get written mail assignments back and forth quicker. Help professors (in ELI) understand
that email is a much more proficient medium for homework than the U.S postal system.
Funding.
Get more government funding, regulate teachers, and crack down on cheating.
Get up-to-date materials and instructors.
Getting more equipment for the labs.
Good instructional services.
Have classes a little more challenging that help students to cope with higher level classes at their transfer universities.
Have good food in the cafeteria.
Have longer hours at the front desk.

Question 3: How Can NVCC Improve Its Instruction and Service?
Help to students if all teachers explain from the first day (in the syllabus) how and what they will be graded on, and provide
them with their own grade sheets so they can count up their points as the semester progresses. Making each attended day
worth points.
Higher standards. Make the degree mean something! The lack of grammar skills on the job reflects the school.
Hire more multilingual help services. It could be done by existing students (work from home maybe).
Hire professors who can speak English well.
I don't have any complaints with the instructional part of my education. My only complaint is that the counselors need to be
on the same page of information.
I have not noticed any deficiency in instruction and service. The only think I could have wished for was a full 4-year degree
university.
I thing it will be an excellent improvement if the students are given more practices rather than theories.
I think each semester there was supposed to be an internship program for courses for Legal Assisting.
I think professors can add projects, presentation, and more research papers. These papers are important to ensure that
we understood and learned.
I think the counselors should be more actively involved. For example, some of my credits were not accepted at GMU. The
counselors should tell the students what is needed to be accepted to transfer institutions.
I think you are doing exceptional work but maybe you could improve the cafeteria.
I wish there were more trained counselors who are knowledgeable about different careers and majors at NVCC campuses.
I would highly recommend anyone to attend NVCC. Although one of my biggest complaints is the lack of "hands-on"
networking or computer classes. Sometimes, when it appears to be a hands-on class the instructor makes it more book
work rather than actual hands-on.
I would like to see more language courses other than Spanish.
Improve building and appearance of classrooms.
Improve the above issues and incorporate more research based computer techniques and library skills.
Improve writing services.
Instructors (assistant deans) should be supervised more. Demand more real world projects that require group cooperation.
Require the class Interpersonal Communications and demand as much work from older instructors as younger ones and
annually audit their classes.
It's fine to me.
It would be nice if other credit cards were also accepted for tuition payments.
Just continue to hire good and well trained instructors.
Keep evaluating the instructors and listen to the voices of the students.

Question 3: How Can NVCC Improve Its Instruction and Service?
Know who you are hiring to teach and get rid of that orientation class. It was a waste of time.
Lower book prices and have a better availability of fine art classes.
Lower the expensive book prices.
Maybe putting more attention in some sensitive areas might help to improve such minor inconveniences.
Maybe having surveys more often or something similar.
More advisors who are aware of many programs, updated computer labs, more challenging courses in honors sections.
More computers in classrooms, more technology use in classrooms, and better counseling services.
More effective teacher availability, although systems have changed since my enrollment.
More evening and Saturday classes for working students, more flexibility to choose the subjects, and more options.
More guitar courses.
More orientation and make it mandatory for students to take orientation class within their first two semesters.
More parking and get rid of some teachers.
More staff availability, especially in counseling and career counseling.
More student activities.
None that I can think of. The teachers were great but the times were just too late in the evening for me.
NOVA's instruction is excellent. I don't have any further suggestion. However, NOVA can improve the food services
because there are not many options to choose from.
NVCC is improving and has improved a lot ever since I started at the college.
Offer more classes and make sure that most of the classes can be transferred. Train all employees to know a lot about
their work.
Offer more walk-in help at more campuses. I only saw it at the Annandale campus.
Offer more weekend classes for those who cannot take classes during the week. Also, have more parking available for
students. You can drive around for 15-20 minutes trying to park then you're late for class. I found that to be so frustrating.
Offering more weekend classes.
Provide a more complete Microsoft Programming path
Provide better academic advising and access to counselors during the evening hours.
Provide more personal counseling and career counseling.
Provide the same attention to all students’ needs (special needs) and get new counselors.
Providing information to counselors from the departments. The counselors will be updated with new information that way.
Providing more class using the ELI.

Question 3: How Can NVCC Improve Its Instruction and Service?
Put together an online course of instruction for certain degree programs to assist full-time employees and active duty
military families. Cutting the courses down from six to eight weeks could make this possible
Reduce the number of adjuncts. We deserve dedicated instructors.
Screen your instructors so that teaching is uniform.
Some instructor were very good and some not so good.
Some teachers don't give enough instruction.
Students need to have a clear understanding of the learning resources. It will help them to make better decisions. Also
there are no resources for sport activities, such as basketball courts or soccer fields.
Temporary parking.
The more teachers I got instruction from, the more my opinion of their ability increased.
This particular area of the college is excellent.
The staff needs to attend more to their ethnic views of the students in spite of the agenda.
To know the students well.
To provide more different hours available for a class at the same location.
Try to keep the good teachers and use different ones for difficult classes. I had a terrible experience in my last semester
taking Math 271 and she was the only one so I had no choice but to stick to the class
Using current technology and more online classes.
When I prepared for graduation, I requested assistance from an advisor to insure I had my classes required for graduation.
After registration and after being told that all my classes were in order for graduation, I was informed that I needed two
additional classes.
Why should one have to take biology and a laboratory when they are not ever going to use it?
Allow students to use their parking permit in more than one vehicle. This really causes problems if the student’s car breaks
down during the semester or if they borrow their parent’s car.
As far as IT classes, it would be better if there are more hands-on classes
Better on-line registration and interface would be helpful.
Book price should be reduced.
By observing teachers in the classroom setting and listening to the students complaints.
Everything at NVCC is the best

Question 3: How Can NVCC Improve Its Instruction and Service?
Everything is fine.
Have a better informed staff for international students.
Have more reliable teachers for ELI.
Have more staff members who are friendlier and longer computer hours.
Hire better staff for the bookstore.
I think that NVCC can improve by enforcing high writing standards in every course, not just in grammar classes.
I think you are doing a great job.
Improve services at the admission and records office.
It's fine.
It's ok.
Keep doing what it is doing right now.
Listen more to students concerns in counseling and in the lower level administration.
Have more budgets, more teachers, promotional programs, internships, and group projects. I had a good time. I learned
from all except one teacher, English.
More career counseling specific to Graphic Design program.
More classes that is required for degree programs. The last few semesters it was hard to find classes to fit in a full-time
working person’s schedule. They need to add a couple of more of these higher level classes.
No improvement needed.
Provide materials for labs (automotive tools).
Provide more assistance to transfer students. Notify students what they are signing up for when they do it.
Revamp the counseling services department and ease the red tape in the registration process.
Should have more sections for advance classes in the evening (time starts from 6:30pm- 9:15pm) so people can get to
class on time after work.
The beginning classes where first year students are attending. Crack down on the disruptions. I realize that these are
young kids out of high school or in their early 20's. In the second year of classes people work!
The counselors do not have adequate information. Their knowledge is limited and sometimes a student requires help
selecting classes for professional development and not necessarily to get a degree.

Question 3: How Can NVCC Improve Its Instruction and Service?
Advertise important dates a little better. I know it's in the catalog but as soon as people register they throw the book away.
Allow students to choose tests online.
Any organization should improve for better services. So I think NVCC needs improvement to be on the top of things
compared to other education systems.
Appointments for counselors, offer nursing and high demand courses more than just during fall opening, and offer
childcare (provide daycare- hourly for students).
Art counselors need to know more about their career in new RT-forms (animation, etc.), and what colleges to look into.
Ask for more funds through private agencies.
Better advising for all students.
Better advisors.
Better and highly qualified teachers and new labs.
Better classrooms that do not leak.
Better counseling services.
Better handling of graduation and red tape.
Better maintenance of plotting accessories on computers available during course times.
Better class times.
Better variety of cafeteria food and cheaper books.
By creating a computer or library that is open until midnight, from Monday to Sunday, students will have more time to
study.
Car garage.
Changing the way to advise students. Most of the students consider NVCC as a transitional institution for seeking higher
education at universities.
Chemistry lab facilities at Annandale campus need to be updated and modernized.
Classes could be more interactive.
Classrooms are too small and over populated, it’s difficult to find parking, and they need more variety of food in the
cafeteria.
Competition with other schools and universities.
Continue to encourage diversity in faculty, services, and student activities. Because in the real world you deal with a
variety of options and ideas.
Continue to have instructors evaluated.
The counseling center has to update their information.

Question 3: How Can NVCC Improve Its Instruction and Service?
Counseling services should prepare students on what to expect when transferring. I had 59 credits out of 120 accepted at
G.M.U.
Courses need to cover what they should. For example, world literature should be world literature not western literature.
Decentralize authority.
Don't hire teachers who can't speak English well.
Employ more professors like Mr. X.
Expand classes and options and increase resources.
Faculty in the science department need equipment upgrades.
Favoritism was sometimes shown towards older students compared to younger students.
Follow up with recent graduates quicker than one year after graduation.
Get rid of those bad professors who don't like what they do and don't like students.
Have a detailed class list of names and emails so instructors do not get confused.
Have appointed advisors and allow more time for academic counseling.
Have better academic advisors.
Have counselors look at transcripts properly before denying graduate applicants for having not them. Wait extra
semesters.
Have feedback forms available for students to fill out.
Have it a standard that instructors put more instructional tools online.
Have more classes at Loudoun campus.
Have more hands-on experience within the IT program. Anyone can read a book, but applying the knowledge would have
been invaluable. The two instructors that I had that went beyond the book were my favorite during my career at NVCC.
Have speakers come and talk about dates in certain classes.
Help and introduce students to companies to get jobs after graduating.
Hire more instructors to teach classes, i.e., students do not need to wait for a longtime before entering a program.
Hire qualified teachers especially for very specific majors like ASL - American sign language.
I'm not sure. I'm a cop-not an educator.
I enjoyed all my professors.
I have had no problems and have enjoyed the time I have spent at NVCC.
I think the college should emphasize programming classes to prepare students better. Programming (in any language) is a
very important aspect of the engineering today. EGR 265 "Digital Design" should be taught with more emphasis on
individual projects.
I think they are good.
I thought NVCC did a great job in its instruction and services. There were resources available for students.

Question 3: How Can NVCC Improve Its Instruction and Service?
I was satisfied with the instruction and services of NVCC.
I was very satisfied with the instruction and also with the services I chose to pursue.
Improve equipment tutor's quality.
Improve on making the Medical Education campus a full service campus.
Improve parking; improve computer access, and technology. Most importantly, improve monitoring of faculty performance
and pay closer attention to students actions towards teachers. Deans need to be more responsive.
Improvement of basic skills.
In my case, some hands-on experience with the hardware used and real world scenarios would be very beneficial to
students.
In my major, Computer Science, students need to learn programming in a UNIX environment, as it was difficult to do this
after transferring to G.M.U. Also other students who had transferred in the same major were having problems.
Increase accessibility of adjunct faculty outside of class hours.
Instructors need improvements in communication with students. We're not in high school anymore.
It is good and the only improvement I can say would be to get rid of the non-helpful nursing teachers that are rude.
It might be better now, but it will be helpful for students if counselors can direct new students trying to find their majors.
Sometimes students might have an idea about what they want to study, but they might not know the name for that major or
field.
Keep all faculty and staff informed of any new changes and updates. The counseling office also had problems with
misinformation and miscommunication.
Keep classes inexpensive for those who don't have money and include lab class with lecture class. For example, for IT
classes, have a lecture for half the class and then a lab for the second half so students can have hands-on learning.
Keep it the same. You don't need to improve.
Keep up the hard work.
Let counselors open their eyes to assist people with true and genuine problems.
The library has many old edition books and many a times didn't even find a book that I needed!
Mail diplomas home. I still have not been able to get out to the Annandale campus to pick it up.
The majority of the students at NOVA are in a low income family, so NOVA should think about adjusting the tuition rates.
Make classes more transferable or tell students what are and what are not easily transferable.
Make sure all campuses have the same outline for courses.
Make them free and have the teachers come to my house or continue whatever it is you are doing. My experience at
NVCC is something I treasure. The associate’s degree was a long time coming.

Question 3: How Can NVCC Improve Its Instruction and Service?
Many of my veterans have complained about the math tutoring program here at the AL campus (that it's pretty much
nonexistence) since I utilized the math tutoring center at the AN campus as a student.
May need to improve teaching methods.
Maybe designating certain instructors and classes for people who need a slower pace. Many kids are embarrassed to say:
"I don't get it or would you go slower or explain again".
Monitor instructors more closely. Integrate more technology in classrooms and around campuses.
More books for library and more equipment for respective labs.
More counseling needed.
More food and a healthier selection in cafeteria.
More info on the web (not sure now, but that was my experience when I attended).
More lab task and definitely more individual (not group) engineering lab projects.
More nursing teaching staff, more classes, and more sessions beginning more often.
More one-on-one teaching.
More online accessibility.
More parking and different course hours.
More samples or examples to explain a concept.
More variety of classes.
Need more help for students with majors.
Need more night time courses with information technology and math courses. Instructors should leave assignments on the
web or e-mail them to the students.
Need more online courses and online services to register and get grade information.
Need more parking spaces.
Needs more information about other schools and how to get there.
NOVA is much more lenient with grades compared to G.M.U. Classes need to be more strict to prepare students for the 4year college.
NVCC can have their personnel provide more assistance to their new graduates with employment concerns and teach
students how they can market themselves in acquiring a job, especially if you have no experience in the field of study.
NVCC can improve if the technical classes are more hands-on and the price of the books is more affordable.
NVCC needs to continue to find the correct mixes that will allow it to be a feeder school for are four-year colleges while
also serving the general public.

Question 3: How Can NVCC Improve Its Instruction and Service?
NVCC needs to improve NOVA connect
NVCC should give some opportunities for substitute courses that are matched to the transferring to another university.
NVCC should give us a course on how to find a job. Many of the students are from other countries are not familiar with the
American system. Looking for a job is the saddest thing.
Offer info or pamphlets of various universities for more instruction.
For evening classes that meet 2 times a week, it would help if there were two days in between (Mon-Thurs vs. Mon-Wed;
Tues-Fri vs. Tues-Thurs) a large percentage of evening students work. Giving 2 days between classes would afford us at
least one night to study and one night to sleep.
Open up a new campus to accommodate to the increasing influx of students.
Overall I had a wonderful experience. I felt very comfortable in a friendly atmosphere. I have no complaints. Thanks a lot
for your help!
Overall I think NVCC does a good job.
Part-time professors need to give more in explaining and work more slowly.
Please hire patient and caring people who know their work at the Admissions office. I am still hurt and never forget or
forgive how a couple of the workers treated me.
Please keep faculty advisors who have been at NVCC at least 2 years so they can be use to the system. Orientation is
also not a useful class. It doesn't transfer, and yet it still has effects my GPA.
Please take into consideration having more individual study rooms or some areas for quiet study only.
Print diplomas in-house.
Probably a good training will help to improve NVCC.
A professor compared NVCC marks with G.M.U. marks and said the academic bar is lowered at NVCC. Also increase
computer Excel for data tabulation.
Provide a place for students to talk about good quality teachers (a website where students can post their opinions).
Provide correct info at the right time.
Provide higher pay to instructors to maintain high quality of teaching.
Provide in-service classes so that some employees are more professional when serving students. I've witnessed many
times how the young students are treated poorly by the adults working in various offices (admissions, etc.). All students
should be valued and treated well.
Provide longer computer lab hours including weekend times.
Provide more access to computers. The counselors should give advice on how to plan in order to get into G.M.U. so
people can transfer credits.
Provide more course flexibility.

Question 3: How Can NVCC Improve Its Instruction and Service?
Provide video streaming curses online.
Reach out major companies and ask them to assist on taking NVCC students as employee or trainees.
Rectify these teachers.
Reduce class size within the sciences
Registration and counseling centers need the most work, just in efficiency of handling questions and other issues.
Remodel/ enlarge/ hire more staff
Require more writing and math classes. I'm struggling now because I took only the 2 or 3 English/ math classes required to
get my AA but in my time at Radford I’ve realized I would have benefited more form extra practice.
Science classes really need to improve the teaching techniques, make sure professor speaks English clearly, and that they
teach well.
Screen instructors and eliminate those with gender, age, and ethnic biases.
Screening the instructors better would help greatly. I've had a total of 4 courses in which the students were either doing
nothing or going over the same topic for half the semester. It looked like half the faculty didn't even have lesson plans.
Separate admissions, records, and graduation offices. They need to have more than one person handling graduation year
round. It is totally disorganized and a really big shame. Admissions and records is the only weakness at the entire facility.
Setting up higher standards of educations and more class options
Some departments were under staffed and due to that, help was limited.
Some teachers are horrible. Hire better teachers.
Some teachers need to be more patient with the students.
They need stricter guidelines in letting students register in certain classes, especially higher level classes. Also improve
career and academic counseling and advising.
Take a look at the cost for books. I know new books are costly but the used books, especially when used over and over,
should not have an average cost of one half the amount of the new book.
Temperature problems in some classrooms and labs in CG building.
The improvement of X-ray equipment, along with the Medical Education campus building, was made the year I was
graduating. Great improvement but just a little too late for me.
The majority of your non-teaching faculty is unorganized, uniformed and rude; not to mention half of them can't speak
English. They made my experience at NOVA horrible and I hope that they will be reprimanded or replaced.
The pre-requisites are not clear and changing every year.

Question 3: How Can NVCC Improve Its Instruction and Service?
The science labs at the Annandale campus are good. However, much of the equipment seems to have never been
replaced. Some of the metal instruments were in the beginning stages of rusting.
There are a lot of international students. NVCC may think of a dormitory for them.
There are lots of teachers out there waiting to have a chance to really share their knowledge. NVCC has to renew
personnel because old teachers became lazy and forget the world requires of updated ways of teaching.
There is no student union or any location to go to rest from school. I would recommend a student union.
There are too many assignments and weekly tests. Since people take classes as part-time; they should assist students on
not having to do so many assignments. Its pressure and load for the students.
They could improve the counseling center.
They should teach more international studies and study other culture as well.
Times of clinicals (I know that can't be changed). Lack of organization of certain clinical professors- they should meet the
units personally and prepare them to receive students. Too many times we felt like a burden.
Transcript evaluators should not just go by course name. They should ask what each course title means. Perhaps evaluate
tests used, or ask for a catalog description; from that other institutions thought it was no impact on my degree.
A better career/counseling center.
A community college should offer more evening classes. You can do some but not all in the evening.
Admission and records services and personal counseling (counseling office at NOVA).
The international office at Annandale campus does an excellent job at helping international students. I'm very pleased with
their work.
As far as medical professionals go, NVCC is already doing an excellent job.
Better availability of academic advisors. Counseling office advising was much better than departmental advising. Faculty
advisors go on vacation during registration. That needs to be addressed.
Better communication with students.
Better training for employees that provide general services in registration, bookstore, administration, etc.
Build a campus in the Springfield, VA area, have more tutors available (especially for math and sciences), create student
unions or create more activities for students.
Clean the bathrooms and café more often.
Come up with a more efficient way to counsel the large number of students waiting.
Need day care services for students with children and the bookstore prices are higher than average.
Develop fair testing methods for the nursing program with answers based on facts.

Question 3: How Can NVCC Improve Its Instruction and Service?
Each campus has its own strengths and weaknesses. It was difficult to rate some items when considering my experiences
at both Alexandria and Annandale. I'm sure other students who have attended multiple campuses can agree.
Employ better counselors.
Enable more stuff involving admissions, such as, changes to audit status, etc., and graduations applications being done
via email, fax, or online.
Expand ELI courses.
Faculty needs to be more familiar with programs. Instructors need to do more teaching and less reading from book.
Faculty should take initiative and classes should be more demanding.
Find pleasant people to staff the testing center!
Fix the heat problem in the classrooms.
Focus more on individual students. Provide more one-on-one time.
For my statistics class, if the instructor had spent some time explaining how to use the TI-83 calculator, it would have
helped us.
Get a new decal program. Decals are ruining windows and are very hard to take off. Parking staff are hungry to give out
tickets. They are literally like sharks.
Get rid of professors who hate being at NOVA and don't know their subject matter (such as Mr. X, who will not help
students during office hours because he doesn't know his subject). There are many wonderful lecturers at NOVA.
Have better counseling and advisors.
Have graduated students as counselors because I feel I could better instruct students because I have been through the
system and understand how it works.
Have no conflicting information concerning the RN program and find more time for student counseling. Maybe someone
RN program that is there when the students are, specific on the Springfield campus, can help direct students in the right
direction.
Hire better candidates and credentials with a higher salary. Recruit top professors.
I really think the services are excellent.
I think a different methodology may be better if tried, i.e., same students take courses first term to last.
I think progress will be made in the allied health field with the new medical campus. Adequate funding will be critical.
I think that teachers could have more hands-on things/activities for students, groups (studying), and maybe they could
have more time with students that actually need help in classes on taking better notes and studying.
I think with plans for a new parking structure in force- nothing more needs improvement.
Instruction and services were perfect.

Question 3: How Can NVCC Improve Its Instruction and Service?
Make internet services available for laptop users.
Make it well known to students the benefits of getting an Associates degree in General Studies, rather than just collecting
credits to take to a 4-year school, so they can get on the right track.
Monitor the programs better.
More advertisements to high schools to tell them, financially, it is cheaper and a better place to choose a major before
going to an expensive college.
More Classics classes.
More cross-training for staff.
More weekend classes.
NVCC can improve by providing more parking to students at the Annandale campus.
NVCC is excellent.
Offer degrees that allow majoring in related fields. I studied Hotel Management and wished I could take a few classes and
major in Business at the same time. Offer law class in all campuses, not just Alexandria.
Offer more classes at Manassas campus.
Offer more daytime instructions.
Offer more weekend-only courses.
Quality of classes was completely based on the professor. The better the professor, the better the overall quality of the
educational experience. I learned much more when the professors were engaging.
Really find out what 4-yr universities want from and need to have from NOVA transfer students.
Science lab and choice in classrooms.
Some of the curriculum should be adjusted to a higher level of difficulty in both material presented in lecture as well as in
testing situations. May make an easier transition from NVCC to a 4-year institution.
Surveys should be sent to currently attending students through NVCC mail

Question 3: How Can NVCC Improve Its Instruction and Service?
Advisors should keep up and get in touch with students at least a couple of times a year at least.
Art rooms that have an industrial sink for paint and design classes, a simple printer at the least for the Mac labs, an
informed technician/mentor there, and access similar to the PC labs. Art classes need more models and more weekend
hours.
Be more friendly and welcoming to any student, no matter the age. Your website has a lot of information but is not web
friendly for new comers to understand and work by themselves.
Be sure all counselors give the right advice to all students.
Better classroom settings.
Better communication between the different campuses and students. Create less registration difficulties and better
reliability.
Build more classrooms.
Cheaper parking.
Classes lack enthusiasm. Teachers need to be more motivated and bring real life examples.
Continue to provide quality professors.
Diverse faculty.
Don't let Mr. X get involved with transferring students. I was program placed prior to his understanding. He tried to make
me take classes that weren't required. I almost didn't get into GMU because of him.
Expand the Horticulture program into Arboriculture and Plant Health Care Management. Continue to expand the online
learning opportunities.
Find caring, encouraging, and well-informed instructors like Ms. X and Mr. X. Most of the other instructors had some of
those qualities but did not seem to take a personal interest in each student and go beyond the call of duty to encourage
them.
Get a few new good instructors for computers in Loudoun campus.
Have a more personal registration process.
Did not try online registration because it was not available.
Have internet access for students provided from home, have e-mail accounts, and provide online services.
Have more intensive coursework. Don't make NVCC an extension to high school. Let the students feel like they're taking
college level courses. Also, they should have more group projects.
Hire someone who is qualified and responsible for his/her position.
I believe some of the transfer credit issues have already been resolved. Advising needs to be able to inform students of
degrees that they may pursue based on their past credits. I graduated for an A.S. degree and didn't know it, found out on
my own by accident.

Question 3: How Can NVCC Improve Its Instruction and Service?
I completed a Career Studies Certificate in Accounting. Most of the teachers were good. Maybe they can give more
explanation of the subject matter.
I do not think there is a need for improvement.
I feel like NVCC is doing wonderful job. This college has benefited the poor, the insecure, and those that need inspiration.
Thank you!!
I wished I had met with a career counselor when I first started at NOVA. I did not know about the service until about 9
months before I graduated. I would encourage you to inform students about the services during orientation.
I would have liked a wider variety of courses to choose from on Loudoun campus.
I would recommend customer service training for the registration staff and also better student advising. I was often
frustrated by the lack of specialized counseling for my particular situation.
Improve parking and open a second entrance/exit.
Improve registration. The people at the help desk are not very friendly nor eager to help.
Increase direct communication with policy makers of George Mason. Eliminate confusion passed onto students like me
(admissions criteria).
It would be nice if there was other exit from the parking lot. Also, if the Recording Technology program could become an
associates degree program.
Keep courses current and counselors need to be better versed in classes to aid in course selection.
Keep the class sizes small; that is the best quality of NVCC; personal one-on-one relationships between the class and
professors.
Make sure faculty is available during office hours; know what paperwork that needs processing, how, and when.
Make sure the counselors actually care about the students.
Make the registration process easier and make changes with people in registration office. If you cancel classes at the last
minute because of insufficient students I think it's unfair to us.
Match current career trends with education provided.
More exposure or interaction to employment situations to make the transition from student to employee.
More staff to handle registration.
Need more parking.
Offer more career development in the counseling services, more student activities, and organizations to create more of a
campus culture.

Question 3: How Can NVCC Improve Its Instruction and Service?
One thing I noticed while attending NVCC was the lack of interaction between campuses. My home campus was Loudoun,
while my degree program was focused in Alexandria. It was difficult for the administration at Loudoun to sort out what I
needed at times.
Overall I think it's great
Parking lot.
Placement test for opting-out of entry level courses and credit for life experiences to eliminate wasting time and money on
courses needed for credits. Update facilities- HVAC, furniture, restrooms, and lighting all over campus after dark.
Provide a cafeteria option the Loudoun campus.
Provide more "hands-on" and real world experience in computers.
Rumor has it you may close campus over the summer. I hope you don't because I like to take classes there still, even if
only for audit.
Take all class trips at beginning of the semester. It helps student to better visualize subject matter discussed during
lectures.
The office of registrar.
This is just a thought but maybe in the future, your institution can provide some sort of studying abroad experience in
another country where the credits can apply to a certain student's career or degree.
Try to arrange clubs and extracurricular activities at Loudoun campus.
Updated lab equipment and give students more information about services available
Very satisfied.
A strong professional board of advisors.
Add more things in the course about international issues and focus more on writing.
Be more careful about inputting info on the computer about credits for classes.
Better cafeteria and more student activities.
Better prepare students for a four year university.
Considering the challenges, I could not do any better, so I have no suggestions.
Cut the red tape and be practical. A Horticulture program should be reflected in the surroundings. Why isn't the Loudoun
campus a model for this?
Efficient as is.
Facility improvements and classroom updates.
Have advisors ask the hard questions of students, “ Where are you heading?”, etc.

Question 3: How Can NVCC Improve Its Instruction and Service?
Have an ADJ program at Loudoun.
Have staff that is not rude!
Have transcripts available online. The system did not work when I requested.
Identify and keep the best teachers.
If classes are needed for a degree, offer at least one per year that won't be cancelled. It took me a year and a half to get
the one I needed.
If NVCC could help the graduate students get in the job field, like a job bank.
Improve counseling for the Vet. Tech program.
More selective with adjuncts. Tell ELI teachers that students at home long for some advice, instruction, and feedback too.
Offer better career planning services. Start-up a department, group, or office for students who plan on transferring and
provide counseling on what they should do at NVCC to make themselves an attractive candidate.
Offer more courses at all locations. Better advising services would be helpful. I went to another community college, where
a counselor personally went over all courses with you each semester, unlike at NVCC.
Send the evaluations directly to the students. Most of the faculty is great and top notch but it seems whenever you have a
bad class, they never pass out evaluations.

Question 3: How Can NVCC Improve Its Instruction and Service?
Add health programs in Manassas such as Radiology.
Adult students should not have to waste time taking an orientation class!! As an adult working full time and going to school
full-time, I think I can manage my time and write a resume.
Allow students to register based on status, provide online registration, or get several additional phone lines for registration
day.
As an art major at NVCC, it would have been nice to have taken more than 2 art classes.
Become a 4-year college.
Better counseling and more counselors available.
Better faculty and better teaching techniques.
Educational counseling needs to be greatly improved. Instead of guessing information, it would be more helpful if they said
they didn't know, but would find out and get back to me.
Expanded Recording Technology; perhaps another studio and instructor to help out Mr. X.
Get better technology in classroom settings.
Grow and add more student activities and functions.
Have students learn UNIX.
Have up-to-date list of transferring degrees and pay the tutors more.
I think it is ok the way it is.
If the instructors are given research tools and initiatives it would make NVCC a better place.
Improve the quality of instructors, improve networking labs, and improve science labs.
Increase difficulty of classes.
Increase the budget for the science lab equipment.
Keep class sizes small and listen to student surveys about teachers.
Keep the costs down.
Lab assistants.
Monitor students smoking in the non-smoking area. It is a "big problem"!
More careful selection of teachers with foreign backgrounds.
More informative and additional counselors.
More observation of instructors on what they are teaching.
More student centered programs! Some of the other campuses have more activities that allow for increased school spirit
and higher attendance.
NVCC was excellent

Question 3: How Can NVCC Improve Its Instruction and Service?
Organize or advertise outdoor activities like group activities to help people meet others while reducing stress levels.
Anything to help learn stress management (other than standing around smoking).
Possibly, if there would be more labs like the math lab. I received excellent instruction and help in this lab.
Provide a 4-year Bachelors program.
Provide students who plan to transfer a little more advising.
Referral service for tutors and more buy backs at the bookstore.
The surveys students complete at the end of every class should be taken very seriously. The administration should have
meeting with teachers every month to see how they are progressing.
Update classroom settings.
Varied courses.
Weed out poor teachers. The bookkeeping computer course should have been either based on QuickBooks or covered
half time.
As a current student at Mason (to graduate with my B.S. in Health Science in 1 week), I can say that this is why people
avoid NVCC or transfer/leave quickly, and go elsewhere.
Better science lab equipment. This is a high tech area with many people in technical programs requiring proper equipment
for learning; NVCC lacks these things. Make this survey online so it’s faster so I don't have to take time from my busy
schedule to fill it out.
Come up with more majors.
Hire more open minded (yet very good) instructors who won't belittle students or grade unfairly. For services, improve the
cafeterias and recreation facilities. The Manassas campus food selection is weak.
I felt as though the classes that I took had very knowledgeable instructors. In addition, I found it very easy to register for
classes.
I think NVCC is doing a great job. The cafeteria needs a little update. More study rooms.
I would like for counselors to understand different cultures and take more time speaking with students.
Keep cost low and parking fees reasonable.
Make more science classes (nursing-based) available to take on other campuses, such as Manassas.
More counselors or longer hours.
Need to challenge students more.
Offer math classes that students need on all campuses.

Question 3: How Can NVCC Improve Its Instruction and Service?
Adding more evening classes in some areas.
Build depth in campuses. Woodbridge campus lacks sufficient depth.
Counseling (academic) could use some improvement.
Counselors need to be more careful with the advice given (two years between accounting classes and advised to go into
the 2nd class, where the teacher said to leave).
Dump sociology and psychology. I know the reader won't consider this seriously, but so many of these classes are all
about sex.
Find a way to combine or accommodate for classes that are cancelled because of not enough enrollment.
For teachers to give their ears to their students.
Get classes that are more compatible.
Have more locations like the math lab at your Loudoun campus. I used to self paced math facility, but had to drive all the
way from Dumfries to Loudoun.
Hire better teachers for math and some English teachers
Hire more personnel to provide tutoring service, especially in math, English writing, and English as a second language,
Hire some advance counselors.
I feel that the classroom should provide a more technologically way to teach students such as using projector screens,
plugs for laptops throughout the school, and a better place to study in libraries (more seats would help).
I think at this point NVCC is doing a great job providing a two-year program to those trying to pursue advancement
academically and professionally.
I wouldn't know since my time at the college was a journey that I moved through at each semester and experienced new
and different teachers.
If a student is looking to transfer to a 4-year college, make sure they know to get an Associate degree otherwise things
don't always transfer. Also, find more parking options.
Improve registration and transcript issues.
Instructions and services were good enough.
Instructors should be available other than their office hours. The library should have longer hours (at least till 10 p.m.).
College tuition should be decreased so that more students can join and afford a college education.
It is not necessary. I loved my experience and would recommend NVCC to everyone.
It seems fine the way it is.
Keep expanding ELI offered classes. Don't let Dr. X ever leave. She was a great help to me.
Lessen degree requirements for math.

Question 3: How Can NVCC Improve Its Instruction and Service?
Change more classes start time to 6pm for HVAC program.
More science lab equipment for hands-on learning.
More teachers are needed and better funding for supplies in labs and also for art classrooms.
Need more teachers and offer courses at more campuses. Faculty advisors should be informed on what advice to give
students.
Need to do surveys with students and ask them their needs and come up with alternatives to assist them.
Offer Bachelors degrees. I wish I could have continued going to NOVA.
Offer more business classes and keep the bookstore open longer.
Provide better tutoring services and some type of work program to assist in payment for education.
Provide more classes and schedules.
Provide more opportunities in public speaking so students can gain practice in speaking in front of a large group of people.
Provide specialized areas of study with classes at very advanced levels.
Recognizing when a student needs help and not just assuming the student is not studying, specifically for 50 + years
students.
The Administration of Justice degree lacks the basic requirements for science, math, and a few other classes that, when
transferring, are more difficult at the third and fourth year level. Students need to be aware of this.
The quality of instruction lies in each individual professor and some are better faculty than others. Seminars and other
services for career counseling in a mass course selection environment may help improve services.
They could offer more ELI courses.
Would like to see some Continued Education class for the Massage Therapy program.
ADJ research is in APA format and should coordinate more with George Mason University.
Better counseling for students transferring to a 4-year university.
Continue asking students for advice and opinions on how to improve.
Counselors being more available and personable

amounts of classes.

Question 3: How Can NVCC Improve Its Instruction and Service?
I took a CPR class that could have been a little more challenging. The instruction was great but the students were not
challenged the way that they should have been. This class is very important and everyone needs to walk away knowing
what they are doing.
Inform or educate the students more about financial aid and try to make instructors to tell their students of upcoming
important school events such as transfer day.
More classroom interaction.
NVCC’s instruction, from my point of view is adequate. But the services, such as administration help, can be improved by
customer service training.
Offer a mentor group or team of students to help students.
Send my transcript on time. The computer system doesn't register and send transcripts as it should.
Seriously, the ELI communication needs to be better and quicker. The halls need to give access across in the back side of
the building (opposite main entrance hallway.), and the advice from the counselors needs to be right so I don't spend
money on stupid classes.
Stop multiple choice tests. That only teach students to be lazy. I've passed several classes with "A’s" without even opening
the book. Multiple choice tests give the students the chance to pass tests without knowing the course.
The faculty advisor that I had was very absent minded. One time I came in to talk with him, it took 45 minutes to figure out
a 10 minute problem.
