MGHA sees growth,
goals realized in 2015
By Susan Varnes
I find it hard to believe
that two years have
passed since I accepted
the position of Chair of
the Mississippi Gaming &
Hospitality Association.
Honestly, when I was first
asked if I would be willing
to serve, my initial reaction
was to question if I had
Susan
the appropriate time to
dedicate to the job. But
similar to all important and worthwhile
ventures, I was able to find the time,
and am grateful for the opportunity to
serve. I have learned more than I have
taught and have been enriched by the
experience — it has indeed been a
worthwhile two years.
I am fortunate to work with an
incredible group of individuals at
Treasure Bay who supported me
in accepting the position, stepped
in whenever possible to assist the
association and frequently joined me as
industry ambassadors themselves. I was
also fortunate to have a great group of
officers at MGHA who agreed to serve
alongside me. With hard work and a
focus on the tasks at hand, there was
time to build new relationships and forge
new alliances. We certainly had our
share of fun and camaraderie along the
way and worked with Larry Gregory and
Mike Bruffey, our executive director and
deputy director, to achieve many goals
and overcome several challenges that
faced the industry.
One of our first goals achieved was
100 percent membership in the MGHA
by all commercial casinos throughout
Mississippi. Having a unified association
has not only been powerful, it has
allowed us to achieve many of our other
goals. We built relationships and forged
partnerships with state agencies such
as MDA’s tourism office and other
like-minded associations, including the
Mississippi Tourism Association and
Mississippi Hospitality and Restaurant
Association — all of which make our
4
association stronger and
more effective.
These relationships and
partnerships have shown
us that there is much
common ground and that
we can mobilize effectively
to support joint causes
that are beneficial to the
communities in which we
operate as well as the
entire state.
Varnes
Having worked in the
gaming industry for
nearly 25 years and having had the
opportunity to work in all three regions
of Mississippi since first moving to the
state more than 20 years ago, I have
formed many friendships and bonds.
Much is made of the competitive nature
of casino operators, but what is not
widely known is the spirit of partnership
shared among the operators. Whether
it is a charity kickball, softball or a slot
tournament, a fundraising cocktail party,
a tourism event or just the ability to pick
up the phone and call on one another to
borrow supplies or equipment, it makes
me very proud to be part of our gaming
community in this state, and I look to the
future with hope and confidence that our
gaming community will continue to grow
and prosper.
The gaming revenue numbers have
been well reported. The overall growth
for our state is something to be proud of
given the fierce competition throughout
the nation, and particularly the southern
region of the country. The coast showed
the most revenue growth, welcoming
a new operator at the end of 2015,
while the central region continues to
maintain its solid grasp on market
share year over year. The Tunica market
showed a reduction of approximately
6 percent gaming revenue, and by the
end of 2015, had seen a decrease
in both gaming positions and hotel
rooms. However, Tunica operators were
successful in retaining the majority of
the revenue and tourism in the market

river casinos in Mississippi saw revenue decrease. Gaming revenue
was down statewide in Mississippi and Louisiana in the December

Mississippi casinos took in $167,110,180 in December,
down half a percent point from the $167,997,306 collected in
December of last year. However, statewide revenue in December
was 3.7 percent higher than the November revenue figure of
$161,170,385.
Mississippi Gulf Coast casinos saw revenue jump by 6.9 percent
in December 2015 compared to December 2014, going from
$84,641,265 in December of last year to $90,500,301 this

$69,748,875 river casinos experienced a jump of 9.8 percent in
December.
For the year, Mississippi casinos brought in 1.4 percent more
revenue in 2015 than in 2014. A 5.9 percent bump in annual
revenue on the Mississippi Gulf Coast offset a 3.5 dip at river
casinos.
Riverboat casinos in Louisiana experienced a 4.5 percent drop
in revenue in December 2015 compared to December 2014,
going from $172,711,223 to $165,003,956 in the December-toDecember comparison. Compared to a November revenue figure of
$149,418,708, Louisiana riverboat casinos saw a 10.4 percent
increase in December.
The land-based Harrah’s New Orleans saw revenue fall
27.3 percent in December 2015 year over year, going from
$30,347,674 to $22,056,708. The $22,056,708 December
figure was 2.9 percent lower than November’s $22,709,050.
Slots at Louisiana racetracks experienced a 5.3 percent
decrease in December 2015 versus December 2014, going
from $31,773,961 to $30,100,581. Compared to November’s
$28,016,779 revenue figure, slots at racetracks saw a 7.4
percent increase in December.
Breaking it down by region for Louisiana riverboat casinos,
Shreveport/Bossier casinos saw revenue increase from
$56,187,005 in December 2014 to $56,557,052 in December
2015 for a 0.7 percent decrease (+10.3 percent compared to

Gold Strike guests get life-saving gift during holidays
TUNICA RESORTS — Two Gold Strike
guests had big reasons to celebrate
on New Year’s Eve. If not for the lifesaving action of Gold Strike employees
in December, the guests might not have
lived to welcome in 2016.
It was Dec. 10 and the casino had
been decorated for the holidays. The
general mood was festive. At about
11:45 a.m., Carl Zluticky began his
shift at Buffet Americana, not knowing
he would soon be the difference between
life and death.
As Zluticky routinely prepped
silverware for the lunch crowd, he and
fellow co-worker Angela Henderson
noticed a woman running frantically
toward them. She
was waving her
hands and motioning
to her neck to
indicate that she was
choking. Without
hesitation, Zluticky
dropped what he
was doing, quickly
approached the
Carl
guest and performed
Zluticky

maneuver. After one
attempt, her passage was cleared and
she was able to breathe.
The guest, Patricia T., from Louisville,

for saving her life. She even persistently
tried to offer him money for saving her,
but he humbly refused and explained he
was glad he was there to help.
“It’s wonderful to be able to save a
life. I never thought the skills I learned
in Boy Scouts would come in handy, but
today proved otherwise,” Zluticky said,
modestly.
Just a few weeks later, with Christmas
Day still fresh on the minds of many, the
security team at Gold Strike stepped up
to save another person. It was on Dec.
27, at approximately 1:24 p.m., when
man began suffering a heart attack on
the casino floor. The security department
immediately jumped into action, providing
him with CPR and ultimately saving his
life. Gold Strike has since reached out to
the family of the guest, who said he is
alive because of the quick reaction of the
casino staff. “I want to thank them from
the bottom of my heart,” he said.
Many gifts were exchanged during
the holiday season, but none greater
than those given by the Gold Strike
team members who responded in
these emergency situations. With their
actions, they gave the gift of life.

Therefore, it is without hesitation as
I look back on my two years as chair,
I state how proud I am of the gaming
and tourism industry and express my
gratitude to an industry that has provided
such wonderful opportunities in my
career as well as the careers of the
thousands of other gaming employees
in Mississippi. I know I speak on behalf
of the entire MGHA in thanking our
associate members, Southern Gaming
Summit sponsors, exhibitors and
participants, and all of those individuals
who have been supportive of the MGHA
and its mission. Most importantly, I am
grateful to all of the team members
throughout our industry who give so
much of themselves to represent
our industry day in and day out to
grow tourism and give back to their
communities.

It is with great enthusiasm for the
future of our industry and the MGHA
that I pass the gavel to my dear friend
and colleague, Lee Dillard from Caesar’s
Entertainment, and wish him, Paul
Avery and Cathy Mackenzie, my friends
and fellow officers, great success in
continuing the momentum. I am grateful
for their commitment toward promoting
our industry and for their friendship — we
have learned so much together, but the
journey is continuous, and there is much
to do. I am confident they will continue to
put their brilliant minds and strong wills
to work in making the Mississippi gaming
industry second to none.

AGA releases casino gaming voter guide
MISSISSIPPI — The American Gaming
Association (AGA), in an effort to ensure
that people have the information they
need to participate in the presidential
primaries, has released “The Casino
Gaming Primary and Caucus Voter
Guide 2016.” It includes information
on how to register to vote, key dates
and deadlines, as well as where the
candidates stand on issues that affect
the livelihood of people in the gaming
industry.
The timing for the release of the guide
is perfect; primaries in Louisiana and
Mississippi are just around the corner.
Registered voters in Louisiana will go
to the polls to vote in the presidential
primary on Saturday, March 5, and on
Tuesday, March 8, voters in Mississippi
will do the same. Voters across the
country will cast their ballots for the
next president on Tuesday, Nov. 8. In the
primaries and general election, polls will
open in both states at 7 a.m. and close
at 7 p.m.
Addressing gaming industry
employees, Geoff Freeman, president
and CEO of the AGA, stated in an
introduction to the guide, “As one of the
nearly one million people who work in
the diverse casino gaming industry, you
have an opportunity to play a significant
role in selecting the next president of the
United States.”
“In any state with gaming,” Freeman
said, “we want candidates seeking
elected office to meet with you — to
get to know the employees who ensure
this industry thrives, through worldclass guest services and unmatched
entertainment experiences. In doing
so, they will come away with a true
understanding of what the casino
gaming industry is all about in 2016.”
In addition to encouraging industry
employees to make themselves known
to the candidates, the AGA is helping
employees understand the candidates
and their positions on casino gaming.
The guide features a listing that uses
a green, yellow and red color key to
illustrate candidates’ stances on casino
gaming. A green dot means a candidate
is open and supportive of gaming. A
yellow indicates that a candidate is
mixed on gaming, and a red dot signifies
that a candidate is opposed to gaming.
8
MISSISSIPPI/LOUISIANA GAMING NEWS
The AGA stipulates this is not to be
interpreted as an endorsement or a
statement of support for any candidate.
Here is where the candidates stand on
gaming, according to the AGA report:
Jeb Bush (R) • opposed to gaming
Bush governed a state where gaming
supports nearly 8,000 jobs, drives $1.2
billion in economic activity and generates
nearly $350 million in tax revenue. He
served on the board of the Florida “No
Casinos” group, which opposes the
expansion of casino gaming in the state
because it believes gaming poses a
“threat to our economy, our families, our
quality of life, and the character of our

Chris Christie (R) • open and
supportive of gaming
Christie is intimately familiar with
the casino gaming industry due to
the industry’s large presence in New
Jersey. Christie has made a number of
efforts to boost Atlantic City and gaming
employees in the seaside casino resort
town.
As he sought reforms in 2010 to
help Atlantic City, Christie said, “I’m
pleased that members of the casino
industry recognize the importance of this
effort, support the recommendations
my administration has put forward for
FEBRUARY 2016
Atlantic City and have stepped up with
a meaningful commitment to turning
around Atlantic City. Through continued
cooperation with the Legislature, local
officials, business and industry, and
partnerships like this, my administration
is moving forward to secure Atlantic
City’s place as a premier vacation
destination that is safe, welcoming and
prosperous.” (Press of Atlantic City, Oct.

Hillary Clinton (D) • open and
supportive of gaming
In a debate during her campaign for
U.S. Senate in 2000, Clinton said, “I
know how hard the people in Niagara
(New York) are working to try to turn
their economy around and if they believe
that a casino would help attract more
tourists back to what really was the
tourism capital of America for so many
decades, I would support that. I leave
that to their judgment.” (Online Poker
Report, Oct. 22, 2014)
In June 2015, Clinton spoke at MGM
Resorts International’s Aria Resort &
Casino and met with gaming workers.
During her speech, she recognized the
workers, saying Las Vegas “runs on
grit, not just glitz.” (POLITICO, June 18,
2015)

determination as to what level of casino
gaming to allow.’” (Las Vegas ReviewJournal, Dec. 15, 2015)
Carly Fiorina (R) • open and

“‘I know people feel very strongly
about (gaming), but it’s not the most

Fiorina, a former CEO of Californiabased technology giant HewlettPackard. ‘Government gets involved
in too many things in general and it’s
counterproductive for government to
slow the advent of technology.’” (Las
Vegas Review-Journal, Dec. 15, 2015)
John Kasich (R) • mixed on gaming
Kasich is governor of a state where
gaming supports nearly 18,000 jobs,
drives $3 billion in economic activity and
generates more than $900 million in tax
revenue.
“If people in Ohio are going to
Kentucky, Pennsylvania, West Virginia,
Michigan (to gamble), we have to
honestly look at whether, if they want to
do that, we can keep them here and we
can benefit and lower their taxes, not
patch holes in a budget.” (The Columbus
Dispatch, July 31, 2009)
When asked about his successful
effort to raise taxes on casinos in Ohio,
Kasich said, “Look, they needed to pay
their fair share to the state. Most of the
agreement was with local communities,
OK? And I thought the state should
get more, and we reached a good
agreement. And they’ve opened all the
casinos and things are fine.” (Ralston
Live, June 15, 2015)
Rand Paul (R) • open and supportive
of gaming
“When I asked Paul about gaming,
he signaled his position by immediately
quipping, ‘I lost a hundred bucks last
night playing craps.’ Then, he added, ‘I
really don’t think the government ought
to be involved in it. That’s a personal
decision that people should make…
It’s great for Nevada, and I wouldn’t do
anything to stop it.’” (Ralston Reports,
January 17, 2015)
Marco Rubio (R) • opposed to gaming
Rubio represents a state where
gaming supports nearly 8,000 jobs,
drives $1.2 billion in economic activity
and generates nearly $350 million in tax
revenue. Rubio has described expanded
gambling as “morally indefensible.”
(Orlando Sentinel, Nov. 18, 2007)
In a 2007 op-ed for Florida Baptist
Witness, Rubio wrote: “I will be more
steadfast and diligent in my final term as
speaker to oppose gambling legislation.
But Floridians who oppose gambling
must also send a message that there
is an electoral price to be paid for
supporting gambling.” (Palm Beach Post,

In a debate last August, Trump said,
“I had the good sense to leave Atlantic
City, which by the way… every company
virtually in Atlantic City went bankrupt.
Every company.” (Philly Magazine, Aug.

At last a debate last September,
Trump said, “And I will tell you this:

Evangeline Downs opens new dining option
OPELOUSAS — Fast and Lucy’s Pub — a new drinking and
eatery experience offering craft beers and sports on tap,
with a fun and creative reinvention of bar food — has made
its debut at Evangeline Downs Racetrack Casino and Hotel in
Opelousas.
“This is a bar you have to see to believe,” said Ted
Bogich, executive vice president of operations for Boyd
Gaming, owner and operator of Evangeline Downs. “With
an immersive sports viewing experience, great brews and
cocktails, and our unique signature dish — a reimagined
sloppy joe, delivered Cajun or Cubano style — Fast and
Lucy’s takes the Evangeline Downs experience to another
level.”
Slightly elevated above the heart of the Evangeline
Downs casino floor, Fast and Lucy’s is anchored by a large
rectangular bar featuring a sleek granite countertop. Guests
may choose to unwind in comfortable lounge seating, or sit
in plush, tufted-back booths to grab a quick bite from the
menu. Sports fans will love the 32 large flat-screen TVs (up
to 79 inches in size) encircling the bar, offering fantastic
views of the game from every seat.
Befitting its name, Fast and Lucy’s prides itself on craft
brews served quick as a flash. Beer lovers will find flavors from
across the state of Louisiana: Canebreak Wheat Ale by Parish
Brewing Company; Andygator (a seasonal selection) by Abita
Brewing Company; and the property’s signature Spotted Horse

Employees volunteer on MLK Day
TUNICA RESORTS — A group of employees from Gold Strike spent
Jan. 18 honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and legacy by
volunteering at the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis.
“We were looking for an event to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.
Day and this seemed perfect,” said Robert Leise, surveillance manager
at the resort and organizer of the event. He said the museum, built
on the site of King’s assassination at Memphis’ former Lorraine Motel,
was looking for volunteers to manage the large crowds that typically
visit on the holiday.
“They get lines around the block, and they’re not really equipped to
handle crowds of this magnitude. For that reason, they ask volunteers
to help assist with lines, act as greeters and so on,” Leise. “It’s also a
good team-building exercise; it always pulls people together when you
participate in an event off property.”
Nearly 40 team members participated from several departments,
including table games, surveillance, security and human resources.
Leise added, “We’re going to try to make this an annual event. It just
makes sense because Memphis is so close by.”
