Setting -Takes place in Dublin in quiet street, in the narrator's house, and in the bazaar. -Gloomy and inactive atmosphere. Used personification: ex. Blind street. Houses gazed at one another. Plot The young boy lives in quiet street with his uncle & aunt. He loves his friend's sister. He reaches epiphany when he finds out that she didn't love him & she only wanted a gift from the bazaar. He found out that all that mattered was money. (Welcome to the adult world) Araby short story Character Point of view -the boy is the main & round character. Developed through out the story. -the rest of characters are flat & minor. First point of view adult narrator, which is the main character. The story was narrated "after" it happened, which added to it the adult deep touch. It described the movement from the childhood world to the adult world. The narrator expressed his feelings because he was connected to the epiphany. If the story was narrated "before" reaching the epiphany, the boy would not be able to absorb the events, and he won't be able to understand that he was entering the adult world. Theme We can find several themes in the story: -indiļ¬erent adult world (described in epiphany) -theme of paralysis (no movement, no change) -gap between romance & reality (the title of the bazaar suggests exotic things, while in reality it was related to English not Arab) Why did he use personification? -create certain atmosphere of paralysis to the readers. The atmosphere of depressed feeling of death
