April 2015 Sharing a “Thank You” Our leaders, who are all volunteers, work tirelessly to share their wealth of knowledge/skills and/or to organise special events for our members to enjoy. If we didn’t have leaders/event organisers, we wouldn’t have an SU3A. Simple as that! We do acknowledge and appreciate their contribution. Sometimes, however, out of the blue a member will let a leader/event co-ordinator know just how much the effort expended by the leader/organiser is appreciated. This happened recently when a member emailed Bobbie Kersten, one of our top organisers Bobbie was so touched that she shared the email with us at our last Committee Meeting and I thought it would also be nice to share it with you. “Hello Bobbie – Just saw your email address in the booklet and wanted to thank you for such a lovely day at Patonga on Wednesday. It really was such a gently delightful day. Have seen your name and heard about you for so long, and just wanted to acknowledge what a marvelous job you do in organising all these outings.” Inner West Region CORRECTION In last month’s newsletter the name of the course run by Ross Bell was named “How The Courts Work”. That is incorrect. How the Courts Work is the name of the course run by Beatrice Scheepers. Ross’ course is “Downing Centre Visits” Apologies to Beatrice PLACES STILL AVAILABLE: AUSTRALIAN BALLET GISELLE WEDNESDAY 15 APRIL 1:00 PM CANADA BAY LIBRARY FUNCTION ROOM Cnr Flavelle and Wellbank Streets BUS M41 ACROSS FROM BURWOOD RAILWAY STATION TO FRONT DOOR $5.00 (Afternoon tea) Bookings: Bobbie Kersten 8854 1646 Mob: 0410 873 605 Email: bobbiekersten@iinet.net.au NEW MEMBER MEET AND GREET An afternoon tea was held at the Drummoyne Community Centre for new members on March 25. It was great to welcome such interesting and talented people into the Inner West Region. Already one of the new members, Ron Shapiro, is leading a Cryptic Crossword Group at Central Office (see page 2 for story). Another one of the new members has volunteered to give a talk for us next semester also at Central Office. How lucky are we? Talent + Knowledge + Skills + Sharing = U3A SYDNEY U3A INCORPORTED ABN 32 251 810 896 LEVEL 2, 2 CARRINGTON STREET SYDNEY, NSW, 2000 April 2015 Inner West Region SEMESTER 2 2015 JULY - DECEMBER Venue and Regional Course Co-ordinators are busy sending out Leader Intent Forms, booking venues, entering and formatting the text for the course book for Semester 2 and doing the 101 other little jobs associated with a new semester. CRACKING CRYPTIC CROSSWORDS AT CARRINGTON STREET It is important that members wanting to book spots in courses do so as early as possible after receiving the book, as some courses are very popular and long waiting lists result. If any member on a waiting list is interested in running their own course rather than stay on the waiting list, contact our Regional Course Co-ordinator, Colleen Adams (Email preferred) colleen.adams44@gmail.com 9713 7569 We also ask members booking courses to be mindful of the fact that the leaders/organisers/ booking secretaries are all volunteers. If you leave a message and nobody responds, please call/email again. Cryptic crossword compiler, Ron Shapiro, led a course entitled Cracking Cryptic Crosswords in February and March. The course was designed for U3A members who wanted the enjoyment derived from solving cryptic crosswords, but who have, in the past, found the challenge either too great or just too mysterious. Ron’s course covered the types of cryptic clues typically used by crossword compilers and many of the tricks they use to put solvers off the scent. As well as working through Powerpoint slides, participants undertook guided practice solving crosswords specifically designed for the course. Feedback from this structured but informally led course indicated that participants learnt a lot and best of all had heaps of fun doing it. Because the room can take a maximum of 12 for the method used, three of the original 14 who applied to enrol volunteered to move to the next course starting on 14 April and running at fortnightly intervals for four sessions. There are only a couple of places left in this course. If you want one of those places, send an email to Ron Shapiro at rmbjs@iinet.net.au Page 33 of current course book.
