Board President, Tony Mestres
This Annual Report letter represents the final
communication penned by me as president
of Kindering’s board of directors, as I proudly
pass the flag with a big lion on it to Glenn Lux,
Kindering’s new president of the board. Glenn
is the president and CEO of Pediatric Associates and an
accomplished MD with an enormous wealth of experience
squarely in the middle of what is Kindering’s cause. He is
also an impressive and experienced organizational leader,
and I could not be luckier to have him as my successor.
what professional dedication and devotion really meant as
I witnessed the commitments and impact of the staff on
the lives of the children and families we serve. Kindering
taught me how critical our advocacy and championing of
our most vulnerable is in a world rocked with economic
and social shifts. In short, Kindering has changed my life
and I am a far better man having had an opportunity to
serve such a unique and incredible organization. I intend
to stay close, because the growth I have experienced at
Kindering is just too addictive to shake.
This year represents the ten year anniversary of my
working with Kindering, first as a volunteer, then as a
board member and finally as president of the board. If I
am lucky, I may have given Kindering, its kiddos and their
families, some small value along the way, but I know deep
down in my heart that it pales in comparison with what
Kindering has given me. Kindering has shown me the
true strength and beauty of children and taught me that
all children belong to all of us, especially the ones most
in need. That experience was pivotal for me personally
as my wife, Laurie, and I embarked on the process of
adopting our beautiful daughter, Bo. Kindering taught me
In a more formal sense, I will also say that I am proud to
leave my post at Kindering with the organization continuing
to improve and build on its already impressive service
quality, organization stability, talent level, operational integrity,
long-term planning and leadership structure. That said, the
need and mission remain dependent on your help, in any
way you can. So, in parting, I want to enlist you again to find
your own way to grow and learn while helping infants and
children with special needs live fulfilling and happy lives.
All my best,
Executive Director, Mimi Siegel
Kindering’s annual luncheon gathers together
our entire community. In 2011 we featured
Ike Ditzenberger and his high school
football coach. More than 3,000,000 viewers
worldwide have watched the heartwarming
video of Ike scoring a touchdown during a varsity game.
Ike also enjoys his job at Starbucks.
Emily Ernst has worked part-time at PetSmart for four
years. Ross Showalter published a novel and, as I write
this, he is attending his freshman orientation at
Western Oregon University. Cole Hardman, a proud
University of Puget Sound and Sigma Chi alum, was
honored with United Way’s Spirit of the Safety Net Award,
given each year to an outstanding employee. Megan Boss
was elected Eastside Catholic’s prom princess.
She takes delight in her work at a local grocery store
and her pay check.
Brad Morse flew alone to visit a friend in the Bay Area. And
Jocelyn Willis’ grandmother surprised her with a visit from
Winnipeg in celebration of Jocelyn’s high school graduation.
With notable discipline, Kindering utilizes evidence-based
interventions and rigorously evaluates our programs and
services. We trumpet our stats:
●97% of infants and toddlers gain skills
●73% narrow the gap with their typically developing peers
●36% close the gap by age three and are no longer
eligible for special education, conservatively saving our
local school districts $1.6 million each year.
However, these data pale in significance in the light
of a graduate’s joyful success, a father’s pride, and a
grandmother’s embrace.
In Kay Ditzenberger’s words: Ike and I showed up on the
front steps of Kindering just one week after Ike’s birth in
1993. I was a young mom; confused about how to help
my baby. I didn’t understand what Down syndrome was
nor what Ike could become. At Kindering I learned that
the possibilities are endless and there is not only hope
but fulfilled dreams and much joy. I met with the most
professional, compassionate individuals I would ever meet.
It shaped not just Ike’s young life but my expectations
for his growth and development. That was KEY! It was
THE REASON why our family raised the bar on what we
expected Ike to become.
Kindering has reached into the lives of countless families
with untold needs. It is a place of hope, joy and unlimited
expectations. My young man, that our family is so proud
of, mustered the courage and gusto to reach for all that
school and life have to offer. None of this would have
happened if Ike and our family didn’t have Kindering as
his first start. That’s where our hopes, our ambition for him
and his foundational skills were formed.
2011 was a dynamic year of sustained commitment to
children and families- all made possible because of your
generosity and dedication to the children in our care.
With continued and heartfelt gratitude,
Parent-Child Home Program (pchp)
United Way of King County awarded funding to Kindering in 2011 to begin
offering the Parent-Child Home Program (PCHP).
PCHP is a national model that
focuses on early literacy and
school readiness with a vision
of ending the achievement
gap. The program
encourages communication
and educationally focused
play between parents and
their preschool children.
The home-based services engage isolated, diverse,
low-income families. This year, Kindering served many
Spanish-speaking families in the Bellevue and Redmond
area who might otherwise not have access to early
learning services. The PCHP curriculum is focused on
two to four year-olds and their parents. Specially-trained
home visitors come twice a week with gifts of books
and educational toys over a two-year period. The visit
is structured in a way that these materials are used to
encourage the child’s development. Home culture and
language is supported through bilingual reading materials
and home visitors who connect with families in their first
language. Parents develop new skills and knowledge with
the support of their home visitor as they enjoy watching
their child learn and grow.
Recently, Hannah, the PCHP Coordinator, shared a few of
the success stories from PCHP’s first year:
●Before this year’s epic snow storm, Alma, the family’s
home visitor, read Snowy Day with Alexia and her family.
After reading the book they told Alma that they wanted
to take Alexia to see the snow (they had never seen
snow!). Alma encouraged them to go to
Snoqualmie Pass and take pictures! On
their way out to the mountain they talked
about the book. When they got there, they
reenacted the activities—sledding & making
footprints in the snow and Alexia loved it!
When Alma saw the family, they could not
wait to read the book again and tell her
about their own snowy day!
●Jorge’s family wanted a library card so
Judith, their home visitor, worked with mom
on the application and then met the entire
family at the Lake Hills Library for their weekly visit. The
family loved exploring the children’s area and the boys
were so excited that they could take the books home!
●Kindering home visitor, Lupita, met Carmen, a 21-yearold mother of two last fall. Carmen and the children’s
father were living in a room in a house that they shared
with two other families. In January, Lupita learned that
the children’s father was no longer living at home and
Carmen could not pay her rent and had to move in with
a friend. Things got worse in February; Lupita arrived
at the apartment to find all of the family’s belongings
outside. However, with Kindering’s help Carmen was
able to get connected with a hotel stay, and later enter
into a family shelter.
Despite it being a roller coaster year for her family—
Carmen and the children were able to complete all 46
home visits this year! In their end of the year interview
Carmen shared, “I read more with my kids and have
spent more time playing and doing all sorts of activities
this year than ever before. My daughter has learned
numbers and games, and colors too. Now she is more
attentive. I feel confident; I know she is going to be
ready for school.”
PCHP is more than weekly home visits. The relationships
that home visitors develop with parents and children are
what make the program so special. The team connects
families with additional resources—from free local play
groups to baby and children’s clothing and items through
a partnership with Eastside Baby Corner— the PCHP
team is an advocate for the whole family. Other integral
resources this year have been the
newsletter and parent educational
materials. The materials (which are
distributed in English & Spanish) help
the families stay informed about child
development, early learning, Kindering
and other community services, as well
as plans for any upcoming events, and
share pictures and stories from other
families. In fall of 2012 the program will
grow to serve a total of 60 families.
* Identifying information has either been
omitted or altered to respect privacy.
Across the nation, there are currently Parent-Child Home Programs in more than 150
low-income communities in 15 states. Evaluations nationally find that program graduates:
●Have higher scores on kindergarten readiness measures than their peers with similar backgrounds
●Score equal to or above the national average and significantly above other low-income children on
standardized reading and math tests in elementary school
●Have an 80% chance of graduating high school, while for children in similar circumstances, but
without home visiting, the chance is only 50-50

Communication, Understanding, Behavior
and
Socialization (cubs)
Emily, a sweet little 2 year old girl with bouncy brown curls and big hazel
eyes, walked into Kindering in the summer of 2010 for an evaluation.
Her journey to that day had been a long one.
For months, her parents had discussed their concerns
about Emily’s development with family and friends and they
did not know what to do until a co-worker suggested they
call Kindering. Kindering’s evaluation team determined that
she was behind in a number of areas and also recommended
that she seek further testing for autism. That assessment
determined that she was on the autism spectrum. Given her
diagnosis she was enrolled in speech and occupational
therapy and special education services at Kindering.
Today, Emily is enrolled in a special education class in the
Mercer Island School District. She still loves her iPad. She
is so savvy that she once ordered Netflix movies to be
delivered to her grandmother’s house!
A few weeks later the family received great news— a spot
was opening up in Kindering’s CUBS (Communication,
Understanding, Behavior, and Socialization) program.
CUBS is a one-on-one intensive program for children
with autism based on the principles of Applied Behavior
Analysis (ABA) and the Developmental, Individual
Difference, Relationship-based Model (DIR/Floortime).
ABA utilizes modern behavioral learning theory to modify
behaviors. By functionally assessing the relationship
between a targeted behavior and the environment, the
methods of ABA can be used to change that behavior.
DIR/Floortime focuses on the central importance of
emotions and relationships in learning and development.
Floortime helps the child become capable of warm
reciprocal relationships, spontaneous self-expression,
curiosity, flexibility and abstract thinking.
The CUBS curriculum and treatment plans are designed
to meet each child’s specific needs. Emily’s dad said, “We
started to see accelerated progress with Emily almost
immediately. The consistency, the environment, the overall
program was amazing.”
Emily worked predominately with a teaching assistant, CJ,
in class. CJ was incredibly patient with Emily and quickly
figured out that the way to Emily’s heart was the iPad. It
was a new classroom tool that the teachers were testing
and though other children shied away from it, Emily thrived
with the iPad.
Her mom adds, “I can honestly say I don’t know where
Emily and the rest of us would be without Kindering. After
getting the diagnosis we have met other families that
have children on the spectrum, some that had early
intervention and some that didn’t get diagnosed until
after 3. The difference is beyond measurable. I am
grateful every single day that we went to Kindering when
we did and they were so quick to get Emily immersed
into every possible opportunity available to her. I don’t
think any parent can ever truly show their gratitude for
giving their child such a remarkable gift.”
Emily’s graduation from CUBS at age three was bittersweet
for her parents. She was doing so well at Kindering;
it was hard for them to leave. Yet they knew that her
transition into preschool would be that much easier
because of the skills she learned and progress she
made with CUBS and Kindering.
● Autism now affects 1 in 88 children and 1 in 54 boys
● Autism is the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the U.S.
● There is no cure

* This list represents
our best effort to recognize
those who have given
generously to support
Kindering during the fiscal
year January 1, 2011
– December 31, 2011. If we
have mistakenly left out a
name, please accept our
apologies.
By the Numbers
In 2011, Kindering served a total of 3,299 children and
families center-wide.
Enrollment in our Early Intevention Program continued to
grow to 1,535.
48 different languages were spoken by the children and
families who received services.
East King County is home to the fastest growing Latino
population in King County. Native Spanish-speaking
children accounted for 10 percent of our total Early
Intervention enrollment.
According to the March of Dimes, 1 in 9 babies born in WA
State is premature, an increase of nearly 30% in the past
decade. More than 20% of infants and toddlers who enrolled
in Kindering last year were preemies.
The 2006 publication Investing in Children: An Early Learning
Strategy for Washington State by the Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation, states that approximately 23% of all children
0–5 in Washington State are born with two or more risk
factors that can jeopardize school-readiness.
