REMEMBERING GERRY POIRIER AKA GRANNY BUCKBOARDS
Date: Sat, 10 May 2014 08:37:26 -0700
From: Kathy LaChaine <klachaine@CHARTER.NET>
Subject: Geraldine Poirier
I'd like to share that Geraldine Poirier passed away last night just days after her 93rd birthday. Gerry was a
member of Heels N Wheels way back when it was the only driving club in Southern CA. She used to organize an event
called "Too Far Days" held in Ojai because the club was based in the San Diego area and everyone said it was too far to
drive to Ojai! Those who made the trip enjoyed Dressage clinics, driven barrel racing, games, BBQ and a Sunday drive.
She was a founding member of the Whip'R Snappers Driving Club in Ventura County and loved driving her Morgan
Annie. Her gregarious nature and easy smile found her friends far and wide. Well into her seventies, her ankles
(injured in a chopper crash during her time as a nurse in the Korean war) gave out and she had to quit driving Annie.
Not one to be defeated she could still be seen at the occasional event with her electric chair. Even the last couple
years, although she moved to assisted living, she was still sharp as a tack and enjoyed hearing all about the goings on
in the driving world. She hugely enjoyed her 90th birthday party when many of her driving friends joined her to
celebrate!
I personally would like to thank everyone who stayed in touch with Gerry through the years and sent her
cards. Reading her your recollections and stories recently was a treasured memory I will keep.
Kathy
Gerry Poirier
memorial service will
be held at:
St. Andrews

Gerry was surrounded with friends at her 90th birthday party, of which 8 or 9 were fellow founding WS
members .

From the Editor:
Ted & I will always remember
Gerry for her generosity and love
Of driving. When she could no
Longer drive she entrusted her
horse Annie to our care. We had
many good drives with Annie. I
especially remember Gerry coming
to Ram Tap to cheer us on. Several
times Gerry drove all the way to
Llano to Suellen’s house so she
could get a chance to drive Annie
herself with the help of Suellen and
Ted. Gerry was a great lady and a
true lover of driving. I’m sure she
and John Morgan are reminiscing in
heaven as you read this column. May the Lord hold Gerry in the palm of his hand.
I will have some scotch in her honor (not my drink, it was hers...). What a
great lady. She even had a PhD, but was too interested in everything else
to ever discuss her accomplishments. We had many fun times together.
Thanks for everything, Gerry.
Best to all,
Beverley Lloyd
May she rest in peace with loving thanks from her driving friends.

Oak Run Command
Decision
aka “Kirk”
Kirk was foaled in 1993, the first colt out of our mare, Knight, and Rapture, a stallion we purchased on
the East Coast from Mrs. Dupont's breeding. I did not see him foaled but arrived at the barn before he
stood. Our son, Justin saw his very erect ears and decided he looked like a Star Wars character. That
led to his registered name Command Decision, aka Captain Kirk.
Kirk was sold as a two year old and sent to Leo Spurill for his driving training. His new owner didn't
know how to deal with a youngster and we ended up trading back after she decided he was vicious. As
he matured Kirk was driven as a single and then in a pair with his full older sister, Ecstasy. He also
became our tandem leader. His half sister Philly was Jay Hubert's tandem leader for many years.
Kirk loved being out in the left front of the team – he knew he was in charge. He adored his big sister,
Ecstasy, and loved having her next to him. He showed well in Las Vegas last November as a leader in
the team.
Kirk would never step on a cone. In the team, sometimes he would jump cones when he couldn't get
big sister to move over. As a single Kirk and Ecstasy vied for first in every obstacle class they went in.
A loss by either one was usually driver error. Last year at Pleasure Days he competed in the team and
then individually won the Pony Obstacle award. He was first in 3 of 4 classes. The second place was
driver error.
Kirk had his idiosyncrasies. I put a saddle on him one day thinking I would break him to ride. He
stood tied and bucked for what seemed like an eternity. OK, he was a great driving pony; he doesn't
need to be a saddle pony. When he was young, we were driving at home after a big storm. We came to
a six inch wide creek that he decided was dangerous. When told to move forward, he gave a huge leap
away from the water and into some tall grass. The grass covered deep mud and he sunk to his belly, all
four legs straight down. For several years after that he got nervous about hard pulling in the mud.
Kirk was doing well until he suddenly backed off on his hay and started losing weight. The sparkle in
his eyes was fading. Blood work revealed leukemia and lymphoma. He is buried in the back of our
farm with his mother and five other Oak Run ponies. We miss you Kirk.

and to educate the public about driving, safety and to include the public in our activities and events.
We are a non-profit organization and a recognized organization of The American Driving Society (ADS).
More than 100 Whip'r Snapper members represent a variety of skills and interest in driving activities;

started and benefit from the help and advice of veteran drivers.
Numerous events are offered throughout the year to accommodate the varied interest of our members and
the driving community. We host a Driving Trial in February, a Pleasure Show in May and a "Halloween Hustle" in
October. We host country pleasure drives that include the Adohr Farms drive in June and the Duck Club drive in
August. You can look forward to driving clinics and pleasure shows. In addition we support driving events sponsored

MAY TIP OF THE MONTH
By
TRUDI TROTTER
When going to events one would like to have a nicely mannered equine. How does one achieve
that? One of the most important things is to work your horse or pony consistently. That means working
them every day for about 1/2 hour or a little more, teaching them in “baby steps”, and ending on a good
note so that they are happy to always get out. Over time, you will have a well mannered, well trained
horse.
