2016 Admission Information
Nursing A.A.S. for Current LPN’s
NU02 (3 Semester Program) – Fall and Spring
Application Deadline:
October 31, 2015 for Spring 2016 (Admission notification will be sent in January 2016)
Submit Excelsior College exam results and copy of LPN license to the Admissions Office by October 31, 2015.
January 31, 2016 for Fall 2016 (Admission notification will be sent in June 2016)
Submit Excelsior College exam results and copy of LPN license to the Admissions Office by January 31, 2016.
How to Apply:
Currently enrolled, matriculated students are required to apply online (myMCC, request a change of major).
New, transfer, readmit, and non-matriculated students are required to apply via Admissions Office.
Students must reapply each semester if not selected for upcoming semester or if declining/deferring admission.
Prerequisites for admission application:
Prerequisite courses must be completed prior to the application deadline.








High school biology/living environment or BIO 120, BIO 132 and 133, BIO 142, BIO 144, or BIO 155 at MCC or equivalent transfer credit with a
grade of “C” or better
High school chemistry or CHE 100, CHE 124, CHE 145, or CHE 151 at MCC or equivalent transfer credit with a grade of “C” or better
High school algebra or MTH 098 at MCC or equivalent/higher college level math with a grade of “C” or better. The math requirement for the
Nursing program must be completed prior to beginning NUR 112. LPNs seeking admission with advanced standing must have already
completed the math requirement at the time of admission. Acceptable math courses are MTH 104, 150, 160, or higher; except MTH 164 and
166. Eligibility to take the math requirement for the Nursing program may make it necessary to plan for additional math courses prior to
admission. Please speak to an advisor to discuss an appropriate sequence.
US citizen or have Permanent Resident Status by the application deadline
New York State resident residing in Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, or Wayne counties
Complete ENG 101/200, PSY 101, and BIO 142/144. BIO 142/144 must be completed with a grade of “C” or better.
Students will be required to take Foundations of Nursing (NUR 110) prior to or concurrently with the first clinical courses.
Within the last three years, have completed the Excelsior College exam #NURX-210 (formerly 403) with a grade of “B” or better, or have
graduated from the Isabella Graham Hart School of Practical Nursing. Either will replace NUR 111, Fundamentals of Nursing at MCC. For

Selection Criteria:
Selection into the Nursing program is based on calculation of quality points earned in the following courses. Students are then ranked from highest
to lowest number of quality points and admission is granted to the students with the most points.






Anatomy and Physiology sequence (choose one sequence; each course must be completed with a grade of “C” or better):
o BIO 142 and BIO 143 – Human Anatomy / Human Physiology* (4 credits each)
o BIO 144 and BIO 145 – Human Anatomy & Physiology I / Human Anatomy & Physiology II* (4 credits each) – new Fall 2015
*Quality points for BIO 142 & 143 or BIO 144 & 145 will be multiplied by 1.25
BIO 202 – Microbiology (4 credits, must be completed with a grade of “C” or better)
ENG 101 or ENG 200 – College Composition or Advanced Composition (3 credits)
PSY 101 – Introduction to Psychology (3 credits)
PSY 212 – Developmental Psychology – Lifespan (3 credits)
Additional points will be awarded for the following criteria:



Students who have completed the math requirement for the Nursing program (MTH 104, 150, 160, or higher; except MTH 164 and 166) at
the time of application with a grade of “C” or better will earn five (5) additional points
Military Veterans will be awarded one (1) additional point
Applicants with a Bachelor’s degree by the application deadline will be awarded four (4) additional points

NU03 (2 Semester Program) – Fall only
Application Deadline:
January 31, 2016 for Fall 2016 (Admission notification will be sent in June 2016)
Submit Excelsior College exam results and LPN license to the Admissions Office by January 31, 2016.
In addition to the prerequisites listed for NU02, NU03 applicants must also meet the following prerequisites for admission:
Prerequisite courses must be completed prior to the application deadline.

Complete BIO 143/145 and PSY 212. BIO 143/145 must be completed with a grade of “C” or better.

Have two years of recent clinical experience as an LPN. (Acute care setting strongly recommended.)

Complete the MCC Nursing Department Exam for NUR 112 (Nursing Care of the Adult & Child – I) with a grade of “C” or better. This exam is
scheduled by the Nursing Department and is administered in early April.
Additional Notes Regarding Admission to NU02 and NU03:








In addition to quality points, admission for LPN applicants is limited to the number of seats available in the degree program.
BIO 143, BIO 144, BIO 145, and BIO 202 must be no more than seven (7) years old for the grade to be considered when the applicant is accepted for admission.
Official transcripts must be on file with the Admissions Office by the application deadline for transfer credit evaluation.
Students who have previously been matriculated in a Nursing program at MCC or another institution within the last five (5) years must consult with the Nursing
Department to determine the applicant process for repeat admission.
If admitted to the program, the Nursing Department will contact students to complete the Application of the Nursing Process (NUR 150) immediately prior to
beginning the first clinical course.
If admitted to the program, the student’s class schedule will be assigned by the Nursing Department. Students must be available to take classes during the day
and have reliable transportation to clinical sites.
Admission is conditional upon completion of medical requirements, clearance of existing health problem(s), and ability to meet essential functions (physical
and mental demands) of the program.
NUE2 may be a program option for current LPN’s working toward admission to Nursing.
Anatomy & Physiology Repeat Course Policy:





Students with two (2) unsuccessful attempts in either Anatomy & Physiology sequence (BIO 142 and 143 OR BIO 144 and 145) will have points reduced by half
for both courses.
Students with three (3) or more unsuccessful attempts in either Anatomy & Physiology sequence will not be awarded quality points for either course.
Unsuccessful attempts are defined as withdrawals (W) and grades of “C-“ or below.
Unsuccessful attempts at previous institutions are included in this policy.
There will not be a penalty if a student begins one Anatomy & Physiology sequence (ex. unsuccessful in BIO 142 and 143) and then switches to the other (ex.
BIO 144 and 145).
