2015 ASC Symposium Faculty Biographies Akhil Agrawal PRESIDENT AMERICAN MEDICAL DEPOT Mr. Agrawal has been the President of American Medical Depot (AMD), since 1993. AMD is a specialty healthcare distribution and manufacturing company focused in the areas of acute healthcare, primary care, and providing complex integrated delivery network supply chain solutions. Mr. Agrawal is also a principal of AMD Equities, an early stage venture capital and middle market healthcare investment fund. Mr. Agrawal is a recognized expert in the field of healthcare distribution and logistics and has been a frequent speaker at numerous industry events, government conferences, and educational programs over the last decade. Mr. Agrawal was honored with the Industry Award of Distinction by the Health Industry Distributors Association (HIDA) in 2010. He is an active member of and has served in leadership roles in numerous professional groups, corporate boards, and trade associations. In addition, he has been appointed to several government commissions over the last two decades. Bernstein is a Managing Director of Valuation and Transaction Services for Altegra Health, Inc. For over a decade, Mr. Bernstein has specialized in providing valuation, transaction advisory, strategic and operational consulting services to clients. Prior to providing valuation and transaction services, Mr. Bernstein held management positions in a publicly traded hospital system and publicly traded pathology company. Mr. Bernstein currently sits on the advisory board for the National Association of Valuation Analysts’ Healthcare Practice Group and recently updated sections of the study materials for NACVA’s Healthcare Consultant Training Institute. Buono joined Surgical Care Affiliates (SCA) in 2013, where he leads development activities - existing and potential health system relationships and transactions with ASCs - in the northeast United States. Prior to joining SCA, he spent three years with CVS Health where he was responsible for business development, growth initiatives and payer relations within their MinuteClinic business unit. Tim has devoted his entire career to investment and development in the healthcare services field, including over ten years as a Partner with TullisDickerson, a mid-sized, healthcare focused family of private equity funds. He also serves on the boards of directors of both Five Star Physician Services and Echo Management Group. Tim graduated from Connecticut College with a BA in economics, and lives with his family in Norwalk, CT. 2015 ASC Symposium Faculty Biographies Kyle Burtnett SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT, OUTPATIENT SERVICES TENET HEALTHCARE CORPORATION Kyle Burtnett serves as Senior Vice President of Tenet Healthcare Corporation’s (Tenet) outpatient services division, overseeing the development and management of Tenet’s ambulatory surgery centers, urgent care centers and diagnostic centers. Previously, Burtnett served as vice president of outpatient service. Prior to his leadership in this division, Burtnett served as vice president and chief of staff for Tenet’s president and chief executive officer, Trevor Fetter. In this role, he was responsible for developing corporate strategy and overseeing key initiatives on quality and growth. Burtnett joined Tenet in 2003 as an associate in Tenet’s Leadership Development Program. Upon completion of the program, he worked with Tenet’s hospital leadership teams to improve patient throughput processes, develop strategic business plans and led the company’s Balanced Scorecard implementation. This program was designed to improve the quality of care at Tenet hospitals by promoting evidence-based practices around quality, service, people and performance metrics. He also played a key role in developing and executing the company’s Commitment to Quality program and Targeted Growth Initiative. Burtnett earned his Bachelor of Science degree in management from the United States Air Force Academy in 1998, and his master’s degree in business administration from the University of Southern California, Marshall School of Business in 2003. Clendenin PRESIDENT, AMBULATORY SERVICES AMSURG Philip Clendenin is President of AMSURG Corp with responsibility for the Ambulatory Services Division of the company where he oversees the operations of the company’s 243 surgery centers. He has over 27 years of healthcare experience working with hospitals, health systems and healthcare corporations. Previously at AMSURG, he was executive Vice President of Operations, with responsibility for Quality, Clinical, Human Resources, Strategy and Marketing in addition to operational responsibility for the company’s centers. Mr. Clendenin joined AmSurg in March of 2009 as Senior Vice President, Corporate Services and Chief Compliance Officer. Prior to joining AMSURG, Phillip gained 21 years of experience in the hospital industry working with Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Tenet in Louisiana and Tennessee, HCA in Dallas and KY before joining Triad Hospitals. His most recent position prior to joining AMSURG was CEO of River Region Health System in Vicksburg, MS, a position he held since 2001. There he completed construction of the largest hospital project in the state of Mississippi at the time culminating in a fully integrated health system. During his career, Phillip has worked with just about every physician specialty and sub-specialty and corresponding line of business. Coleman PARTNER MCDERMOTT WILL & EMERY Ira J. Coleman is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP and is based in the Firm’s Miami office. He is the partner-in-charge of the Miami office and head of the Miami Health Industry Advisory practice. In this position, Shelby plays an integral role in the advancement of the system’s diversification strategy with primary responsibility to expand its footprint through innovative partnership development. Trinity Health serves people and communities in 21 states from coast to coast with 86 hospitals, 128 continuing care facilities and home health and hospice programs that provide nearly 2.8 million visits annually. With annual operating revenues of about $13.6 billion and assets of about $19.3 billion, the new organization returns about $900 million to its communities annually in the form of charity care and other community benefit programs. Since her arrival in 2013, Trinity Health has added $1.3B in net revenue through strategic merger and divestiture activity and developed strategic partnerships in retail, health plan, population health risk management and digital health. Prior to this role, she was Vice President, Mergers & Acquisitions at Dignity Health, a $10.6B health system with acute operations in 3 states and an ambulatory network across 21 states. Ms. Decosta joined Dignity Health (formerly Catholic Healthcare West) in 2005 and served in various strategic planning roles including Chief Strategy Officer, Vice President of Business Development & Clinical Integration, and Director of Strategy for the system’s Nevada market. During her tenure in Nevada, she led an effort to clinically integrate 600+ physicians, established Dignity Health Nevada Medical Group—a direct employment model for primary care physicians and developed an academic affiliation with Stanford Hospital & Clinics to provide cardiovascular surgery and neurosurgery services in Southern Nevada. He is a healthcare industry veteran with both clinical experience and an extensive healthcare management background. Prior to joining Surgery Partners, Michael spent more than a decade in various leadership positions at a large, publicly-traded healthcare organization; at the time of joining Surgery Partners, he held a national position as Senior Vice President of Operations with that company. He has been with Surgery Partners since the Company’s outset, systematically growing the Company both organically and through acquisitions, as well as horizontally integrating the business within the healthcare delivery system. Goettling, Esq. PRINCIPAL THE BLOOM ORGANIZATION LLC Robert Goettling has over 20 years of healthcare experience, most of which has focused on Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs). Mr. Goettling joined The Bloom Organization in early 2007 bringing his vast expertise in surgery centers to help widen the scope of services offered by the firm. Prior to joining Bloom, Mr. Goettling co-founded NovaMed Inc. (Nasdaq: NOVA), one of two publicly traded ASC companies, where he held a variety of senior level executive positions during his 12 years with the company including Senior Vice President Corporate Development. Mr. Goettling had both operational and development responsibility and conducted numerous acquisitions, divestitures and mergers while heading NovaMed’s development team for over 10 years. Golino ASSOCIATE MCDERMOTT WILL & EMERY Danielle Golino is an associate in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP and is based in the Firm’s Miami office. Danielle focuses her practice on mergers and acquisitions in the health care sector and health care private equity. Her transactional health care experience includes the acquisition and sale of physician group practices, ambulatory surgery centers, immediate care centers, pharmacies, emergency department staffing companies, imaging centers, home health agencies, hospital and medical schools. Danielle also has experience structuring transactions to comply with state and federal health care fraud and abuse laws, state licensure issues, corporate practice of medicine prohibitions and other health care regulatory compliance matters. Danielle graduated magna cum laude from the University of Miami School of Law and earned a B.S. from Cornell University. Gordon, M.D. PARTNER MCDERMOTT WILL & EMERY Eric B. Gordon is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP and is based in the Firm’s Los Angeles office. He is the partner-in-charge of the Los Angeles office and head of the California Health Industry practice. Eric focuses his practice on fraud and abuse and compliance issues and health care transactions. Eric represents a wide range of clients, including proprietary and tax exempt hospital systems, medical groups, academic medical centers and faculty practice groups, pharmaceutical companies and medical device manufacturers, and group purchasing organizations. Eric has assisted clients in the development of corporate compliance programs, OIG audits and investigations, and defense of Stark and kickback-based qui tam actions. Grondin PARTNER MCDERMOTT WILL & EMERY Bernard P. Grondin is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP and is based in the Miami office. He focuses his practice on representing private equity funds and strategic investors in complex corporate transactions, including leveraged buyouts, mergers and acquisitions, debt and equity investments, and joint ventures. He also has a unique skill set critical to representing buyers, sellers or joint venture partners in negotiating, documenting, facilitating and closing transactions involving health care companies. Bernie previously advised private equity funds as well as public and private companies with respect to their domestic and international acquisitions, divestitures, investments, and corporate governance. He also represented issuers in initial public offerings, including blank check companies, and acted as corporate counsel to publicly traded companies. Mr. Guarino has testified to Congress regarding hospitals forming monopolies, explaining how access will decrease and cost will increase. Mr. Guarino is responsible for collaborating with and creating an Independent Physician Association made up of over 400 physicians and serves as their Executive Director. In addition, Mr. Guarino recently created Practice Management of America an MSO where he serves as the President and CEO. Mr. Guarino continues to be actively involved as a consultant across the country and is a national speaker on the subject of the current healthcare marketplace. 2015 ASC Symposium Faculty Biographies Clint Hailey SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT & CHIEF MANAGED CARE OFFICER TENET HEALTHCARE CORPORATION Clint Hailey serves as Senior Vice President and Chief Managed Care Officer for the Tenet Healthcare Corporation. Hailey, 50, oversees the company’s managed care payor relationships and portfolio performance. He developed and oversaw Tenet’s move to a national managed care contracting strategy for all of Tenet’s hospitals, majorityowned freestanding outpatient centers and employed physicians nationally. He reports to Dan Cancelmi, Tenet’s Chief Financial Officer. Clint joined Tenet in May 2006. He is a lawyer who has focused his entire career on working with managed care companies on behalf of providers. He came to Tenet after spending eight years with HCA, with his last position being vice president, managed care, for HCA Texas. Previously, he worked in various managed care contracting and other positions with Texas Health Resources in Dallas from 1993 to 1998. From 1991 to 1993, he was a staff associate at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. He holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in business administration from Texas Christian University and a law degree from Texas A&M University School of Law. Andrew has served as President and Chief Executive Officer, and a member of the Board of Directors, of Surgical Care Affiliates Inc. (“SCA”, NASDAQ: SCAI) since 2008. SCA owns and operates more than 180 surgical facilities in 34 states, in partnership with more than 40 hospital systems and 2,500 physician partners. Prior to joining SCA, Andrew was as President of a division of DaVita HealthCare Partners Inc. (NYSE: DVA), a renal dialysis and population health management company, and he was President and Chief Operating Officer of Alliance Healthcare Services Inc. (NYSE: AIQ), a diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy company. Andrew is a Henry Crown Fellow at the Aspen Institute, and he earned a Bachelor of Arts summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Yale University. 2015 ASC Symposium Faculty Biographies Steve Helgemo, M.D. MURDOCK SURGERY CENTER Dr. Stephen Helgemo is a Florida native educated at the Florida State University and then spent the next 11 years in Baltimore, receiving his M.D. and completing an Orthopedic Surgery residency at Johns Hopkins. He then went on to do a Hand Surgery fellowship at the prestigious Curtis Hand Center at Union Memorial Hospital. He is board certified in Orthopedic Surgery and holds an additional certificate of added qualifications in Hand Surgery. He has limited his practice to exclusively hand and arm surgery. Dr. Helgemo has practiced in Charlotte county Florida since 1999 at the Florida Hand Center and was one of the co-founders of Murdock Surgery Center in 2006. He recently served as president of the Murdock ASC and was part of the leadership effort that lead to a partnership between Murdock Surgery Center and Tenet Healthcare. He is recognized as an accomplished outpatient services executive. He has specific expertise in hospital joint ventures, turnaround situations and new ambulatory surgery center developments. DJ is well known for his strategic competency and problem solving acumen. DJ leads his firm’s efforts to provide high value solutions to its clients in the ambulatory surgery center market. He earned his MBA from University of North Carolina. Previously, as Chief Development Officer of Titan Health Corporation, DJ led the national development growth initiatives of the firm until its successful sale to United Surgical Partners, International. Ms. Kehayes has over 20 years of experience in the healthcare industry with expertise in surgery operations, business analysis, reimbursement methodologies and payor contract negotiations. She is a guest lecturer at Yale University School of Public Health. She is Past President of the Washington Ambulatory Surgery Center Association, and currently serves as a Board member and Chairs the Payment Policy Committee. Ms. Kehayes earned a Masters of Public Health with thesis distinction from Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut, and a Bachelor of Arts and a Certificate in Management Studies from the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York. 2015 ASC Symposium Faculty Biographies Ben Kocaj, MBA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR PUGET SOUND SURGICAL CENTER Ben Kocaj is the Executive Director at Puget Sound Surgical Center (PSSC) in Edmonds, WA. His responsibilities in this role encompass managing and directing the operations of a busy multi-specialty surgical practice with ten surgeons, multiple locations and a total of twenty eight providers specializing primarily in bariatric surgery and offering orthopedic, general and cosmetic surgery as well. Mr. Kocaj joined Puget Sound Surgical Center in January of 2010 and has been instrumental in enhancing the practice’s bariatric program as well promoting the growth that the company has experienced in the last five years. Prior to joining PSSC, Mr. Kocaj was the Executive Director at Sunrise Medical Campus in Puyallup, WA, a 100,000 square feet medical center that opened in November of 2004 and which Mr. Kocaj managed successfully until August of 2011. Lambert is the Chief Executive Officer of Ambulatory Surgical centers of America (ASCOA). He first joined ASCOA as its Chief Financial Officer in 1997 and become its Chief Executive Officer in 2002. Prior to joining ASCOA, Mr. Lambert worked at Smith Barney in sell side equity research. At Booz, Allen & Hamilton and Ernst & Young, Mr. Lambert consulted with entities starting new ventures, entering new markets and reengineering business processes. Mr. Lambert is a graduate of Harvard College, where he studied economics, and obtained his MBA from the Columbia Graduate School of Business. (USPI). Marian is primarily responsible for the development and deployment of reform-based strategies to approach payers, employers and third parties to drive profitable business to USPI facilities. She is leading the implementation of a Medicare Shared Savings Program ACO under USPI’s subsidiary IPA in St Louis as well as convening over 400 physicians to participate in Medicare’s bundled payment demonstration program around for orthopedic and spine surgery episodes. Marian joined USPI in 2013 from Strategic Health Care where she was a partner working with some of the nation’s largest healthcare systems to improve financial performance and business strategy. She has also represented the ASC industry in Washington since 2005. Prior to Strategic Health Care, Marian worked with the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission, a federal advisory agency, where she gained extensive experience in payment policy and reform during the period in which Medicare implemented many of the current prospective payment systems. He joined Cobb Anesthesia in 1999 to start their Pain Management program. In 2005 he started Comprehensive Pain Management and rapidly expanded this Pain Management practice to nine locations including seven ASCs. He also added a toxicology lab and an MRI to add to the revenue streams. Patterson is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Mississippi Valley Health (MVH). For the past 15 years his professional career has encompassed a variety of positions in the healthcare field ranging from a Registered Nurse in a Level I Trauma Center to the Chief Administrative Officer of a 350 bed community hospital and Chief Nurse Executive of a 3 hospital health system. In addition, he has served on several not-forprofit community Boards as well as the Red Cross and the national ASC association (ASCA) Board. Michael has served over 23 years in both the Active and Reserve components of the US Navy. He has received the Navy Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and many others and is certified as a Combat Warfare Specialist. He has previously held the position of Officer in Charge of the Expeditionary Medical Force Detachment located on the Rock Island Arsenal. He retired from Naval Service with full honors in April of 2012. He is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives, and is the President and a founding member of the Iowa Association of Ambulatory Surgery Centers. 2015 ASC Symposium Faculty Biographies Robert Powell VICE PRESIDENT OF PLANNING VIRTUA HEALTH Robert (Bob) Powell is Vice President of Planning at Virtua Health in Marlton, NJ. Since joining Virtua in 1996, Bob has been responsible for the development of a variety of hospital/Physician partnerships at Virtua in both the inpatient and outpatient arenas. Since 2006, Bob has led the development and implementation of Virtua’s Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) strategy, which has led to partnerships with over 200 Physician partners in nine ASCs throughout the state of New Jersey. Virtua’s ASC family performs 46,000 surgical procedures a year generating $98,000,000 in revenue. Three of the six ASC transactions in active development feature holding partnerships with two national ASC companies. It is the recipient of the Consumer Choice Award from the National Research Corporation. 2015 ASC Symposium Faculty Biographies William Main Prentice CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER AMBULATORY SURGERY CENTER ASSOCIATION Bill Prentice is the Chief Executive Officer of the Ambulatory Surgery Center Association (ASCA) and Ambulatory Surgery Foundation (ASF). ASCA is the national organization representing the approximately 5,400 ambulatory surgery centers in the US, and provides advocacy, education, benchmarking and staff training for its many members. Under his tenure, ASCA has achieved record membership numbers, significantly increased revenue while reducing expenses, developed a number of new membership programs and services and dramatically strengthened its advocacy efforts on Capitol Hill and with relevant federal agencies. Before joining ASCA, Mr. Prentice was a senior executive at other national and state associations, a lobbyist at both the federal and state levels and vice president of a contract lobbying and public affairs firm in New Jersey. He started his career on Capitol Hill, where he worked for both a member of congress and on the staff of a House Committee. Bill holds an undergraduate degree in political science from The George Washington University, a master’s degree in government administration from the University of Pennsylvania and a law degree from Rutgers School of LawNewark. 2015 ASC Symposium Faculty Biographies Robert Quinn, M.D. BEND SURGERY CENTER Dr. Quinn is the founder of Mountain View Cosmetic Surgery. Along with his commitment to the medical community, he is committed to our community. He is an annual corporate sponsor to the local school district fund raisers and has been a “secret santa” to supply books for under privileged kids. Educational scholarships have also been awarded to fund school activities for those that cannot afford to participate. Dr. Quinn is held in high esteem for his commitment to medicine and the community. He was recently nominated by the American Cancer Society for Outstanding Cancer Physician. A patient nominated Dr. Quinn for his reconstruction work with breast cancer survivors. He takes his work very seriously but maintains a down to earth rapport and good humor with all his patients. He cares deeply for all his patients and has been active with the Sara Fisher Project and assisted the Volunteers in Medicine Clinic with their needs. He is a gifted surgeon and enjoys cosmetic surgery which requires fine motor skills due to the delicate nature of the procedures. He is a participating surgeon in some of the national studies that are ongoing for evaluation of cosmetic implants. This helps the patients that want to participate by tracking outcomes and gives long term continuity of care. Before Dr. Quinn was an award winning plastic surgeon, he was a rocket scientist at NASA. There was a time when NASA required his signature before they would launch any shuttle mission into space. Dr. Quinn decided to move from aerospace engineering to surgery to fulfill his lifelong dream of pursuing medicine. 2015 ASC Symposium Faculty Biographies James A. Saling PARTNER MCDERMOTT WILL & EMERY James A. Saling is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP and is based in the Firm’s Miami office. James concentrates his practice on health care mergers and acquisitions and regulatory matters. James has counseled clients on a wide range of matters, including structuring financial arrangements and transactions to comply with the Anti-Kickback Statute and the Stark Law; Medicare certification and reimbursement; state licensure issues affecting health care providers; corporate practice of medicine and dentistry; joint ventures between health care providers; tax exemption; development of integrated delivery systems; and structuring incentive compensation and risk sharing arrangements. In this role, Mr. Scoskie is responsible for ambulatory strategic growth, physician alignment, jointventures, and strategic partnerships. Before serving in this role, Mr. Scoskie led physician alignment activities at North Shore-LIJ as the Vice President, Business Development. Prior to joining North Shore-LIJ, Mr. Scoskie served as the Vice President of Business Development and Operations for hospitals within West Penn Allegheny Health System (Pittsburgh, PA). In addition to his role in the integrated hospital systems, Mr. Scoskie has experience in the pharmaceutical sector. He led growth activities for Schering-Plough Corporation as the Group Leader of the West Coast and Desert Pacific regions.
