So let’s talk more about a three term contingency. Every response, which is known as a behavior,
is preceded by a stimulus, which is also known as an antecedent, and is followed by a
consequence. A stimulus is presented followed by a response and followed by a consequence. An

This consequence can either be a reinforcer, which increases the future likelihood of the same
response in the presence of a target stimulus. Or, it can be a punisher, which decreases the future
likelihood of the same response in the presence of a target stimulus. As a teacher, when teaching
new skill you want the consequence to be a reinforcer. When this happens, your stimulus
becomes a discriminative stimulus for the response. This is also known as an S-Dee
