The integral event for the organization helps to raise necessary funds to run their character education courses for Baltimore Schools. This year’s event honored Under Armour’s Kip Fulks, President of Footwear & Innovation and featured a surprise visit and speech from Baltimore Police Department’s Lt. Col. Melissa Hyatt. Lt. Col. Hyatt took the stage to express her positive experience with Outward Bound through their Police and Youth Program which has placed officers with Baltimore city youth on one-‐day team building programs since 2009. Baltimore Chesapeake Bay Outward Bound School has recently worked closely with the BPD to expand the existing program by pairing all 3000 officers (active duty and trainees) with 3000 city youth that live in the districts they serve on an ongoing basis. Kip Fulks clearly sees the need for this type of engagement in his community and spoke passionately about how he feels it can change the future for Baltimore. He announced at the event that he and his family intend to fully fund the expansion of the Police and Youth Program at Outward Bound. This gift will significantly impact the efforts to reduce negative perceptions, violence and frustrations between officers and city youth in the years to come. Ginger Mihalik, Outward Bound’s Executive Director shares that, “Changing perceptions is one of the most important goals of this program, and an integral issue that faces our city. Kip’s gift makes real progress possible, and opens a whole new dialogue in our communities. It truly shows his commitment to our city, our youth and our programs at Baltimore Chesapeake Bay Outward Bound School.” The initial cost of this expansion is valued at approximately $250,000, with needs for continued funding to operate beyond the initial phase.
