v1
A great and marvelous work
is about to come forth
among the children of men.
DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS 1
v1
Hearken,
O ye people
of my church,
v2 Behold, I am God:
a saith the voice
b of him who dwells on high,
b and whose eyes are upon all men;
a yea, verily I say:
a give heed to my word,
b which is quick and powerful,
c sharper than a two-edged sword,
c to the dividing asunder
b of both joints and marrow;
a therefore give heed unto my word.
a Hearken
d ye people from afar;
d and ye that are upon the islands of the
sea,
a listen together.
v3 Behold, the field is white
v2 For verily the voice of the Lord is unto all men,
already to harvest;
and there is none to escape;
• therefore, whoso desireth to reap
• let him thrust in his sickle with his might,
• and reap while the day lasts,
• and there is no eye that shall not see,
• neither ear that shall not hear,
• neither heart that shall not be penetrated.
that he
v3 And the rebellious
may treasure up for his soul
shall be pierced with much sorrow;
everlasting salvation in the kingdom of God.
a for their iniquities
b shall be spoken upon the housetops,
a and their secret acts
b shall be revealed.
v4 Yea, whosoever will thrust in his sickle
v4 And the voice of warning
and reap,
shall be unto all people,
the same
by the mouths of my disciples,
is called of God.
a whom I have chosen
b in these last days.
b v5 And they shall go forth
a and none shall stay them,

a v5 Therefore, if you will ask of me
b you shall receive;
a if you will knock
b it shall be opened unto you.
for I the Lord have commanded them.
v6 Now as you have asked
asked,
behold, I say
unto you,
v6 Behold, this is mine authority
authority,
and the authority
of my servants,
keep my commandments,
and my preface unto the book of my commandments,
and seek
to bring forth
and establish the cause of Zion.
which I have given them
to publish
unto you, O inhabitants of the earth.
v7 Seek not for riches
v7 Wherefore, fear and tremble, O ye people,
but for wisdom;
for what I the Lord have decreed in them
and, behold, the mysteries of God shall be unfolded
unto you,
shall be fulfilled.
and then shall you be made rich.
v8 And verily I say unto you, that
• they who go forth,
• bearing these tidings unto the inhabitants of the
earth,
Behold, he that hath eternal life
to them is power given to seal both on earth and in
heaven,
is rich.
the unbelieving and rebellious;
v8 Verily, verily, I say unto you,
v9 Yea, verily, to seal them up unto the day when the
wrath of God shall be poured out upon the wicked
without measure--
• even as you desire of me so it shall be done unto
you;
• and, if you desire, you shall be the means of doing
much good
• v10 Unto the day when the Lord shall come to
recompense unto every man according to his work,
• and measure to every man according to the
measure which he has measured
in this generation.
to his fellow man.
v9 Say nothing but repentance
v11 Wherefore the voice of the Lord
unto this generation.
is unto the ends of the earth,
Keep my commandments,
that all that will hear may hear:
and assist
• v12 Prepare ye,
• prepare ye

to 1bring forth 2my work,
for 2that which 1is to come,
according to my commandments,
for the Lord is nigh;
and you shall be blessed.
• v13 And the anger of the Lord is kindled,
• and his sword is bathed in heaven,
• and it shall fall upon the inhabitants of the earth.
v10 Behold, thou hast a gift
gift,
v14 And the arm of the Lord shall be revealed;
or thou shalt have a gift
and the day cometh
a if thou wilt desire
b of
c me
a in faith, with an honest heart, believing in
b the power of
c Jesus Christ,
a or in
b my power
c which speaketh unto you;
a that they who will not hear
b the voice of
c the Lord,
a neither
b the voice of

a neither give heed to
b the words of
c the prophets and apostles,
[See Isa. (Gileadi) 30:20,21; also 2
Ne. 32:3,6.]
a v11 For, behold, it is I
b that speak;
a behold, I
b am the light which shineth in darkness,
a and by my power
b I give these words unto thee
thee.
[See Deut. 18:15; Acts 3:22,23; 7:37; 1 Ne. 22:20; 3 Ne. 20:23;

v12 And now, verily, verily, I say unto thee,
v15 For they
put your trust in that Spirit which leadeth to do good-• yea, to do justly,
• to walk humbly,
• to judge righteously;
and this is my Spirit
Spirit.
a have strayed from
b mine ordinances,
SHALL BE CUT OFF
FROM AMONG THE PEOPLE;
a and have broken
b mine everlasting covenant
covenant;
v13 Verily, verily, I say unto you, 1I 2will impart
unto you
v16 3They 2seek not 1the Lord to establish his
righteousness,
of my Spirit
Spirit,
• but every man walketh in his own way,
• and after the image of his own god,
• which shall enlighten your mind,
• which shall fill your soul with joy;
• whose image is in the likeness of the world,
• and whose substance is that of an idol,
which waxeth old and shall perish in Babylon the
great,
which shall fall.

v14 And then shall ye know
know,
v17 Wherefore, I the Lord, knowing the calamity
which should come upon the inhabitants of the earth,
or by this shall you know,
called upon my servant Joseph Smith, Jun.,
•
•
•
all things whatsoever you desire of me,
which are pertaining unto things of righteousness,
in faith believing in me that you shall receive.
• and spake unto him
• from heaven,
• and gave him commandments;
v15 Behold, I command you
v18 And also gave commandments to others,
that you need not suppose that you are called to
preach until you are called.
that they should proclaim these things unto the world;

and all this [See Alma 26:27.]

hold your peace;

b these commandments
a are of me,
that you may assist

And inasmuch as they erred
b it might be made known;
And inasmuch as they sought wisdom

the only true

that as many as receive me,
the Lord is God,
to them will I give power to become the sons of God
