HOMELESS SENSITIVITY AWARENESS EDUCATION LESSON PLANS 2 GRADE 8 Inquiry Questions: How does the history of intolerance in America compare to the way that the homeless are treated in the present? Lesson Title: America: Liberty, Equality and Justice for All Description: These lessons will provide students with an understanding of the history of intolerance in America and the experiences the homeless face in the present. Objective: The students will be able to: ¾ Maximize student personal, emotional, and social growth and development. Often migrant groups and other minorities, including the homeless, are treated with a similar intolerance. Have each group create a Venn Diagram comparing the similarities and differences an immigrant group faced and the homeless face. Have the groups share their diagrams with the class. Other Activities ¾ Use Lesson Plans from the “Shadow of Hate” Teacher’s Guide. Assessment: Each student should be able to relate experiences of intolerance immigrants faced coming to America that are similar to experiences the homeless face presently. Teach students to be sensitive to those students who may be experiencing homelessness. Venn Diagram, class participation and completion of lessons.
