College of the Month
University of North Texas
Overview
The University of North Texas is located in Denton, Texas about 55 miles northwest of Rockwall. UNT’s main campus is
home to over 37,000 students. North Texas was founded as
a nonsectarian, coeducational, private teachers college in
1890; and as a collaborative development in response to enrollment growth and public demand, its trustees ceded control to the state in 1899. In 1901, North Texas w as formally
adopted by the state. Today, UNT is the nation’s 25th largest public university.

Happenings
What’s going on in the Counseling Center during January?
A LOT! It is a new semester so we will be working to level second semester classes and make a few scheduling adjustments for students. Since we will need to
move some students around in order to level out classes, ALL students will need to check Skyward prior to first period on Wednesday morning, January 6th to get
their most current second semester schedule. Students may do this from a home computer, mobile device, or one of our computers on the RHS campus. If you
have any questions regarding a student’s schedule, please contact his/her counselor.
The State of Texas Legislature, in September 2007, enacted House Bill 212 which says “...each school district shall adopt and implement a dating violence policy” and
“...address education for all students and parents”. As part of this bill, during the week of January 6th, 2016, RHS students will be learning about Teen Dating
Violence and Healthy Relationships. This curriculum will include discussions about dating vs. relationships, red flag behaviors, break ups, types of abuse and goal
setting. Please scroll down and see the attached flyer for more information regarding this program that your student will be participating in.
In addition to beginning a new semester, counselors will begin meeting with student regarding their course selections for the 2016-2017 school year. We will be
meeting with current 10th graders on Thursday, January 7th and current 11th graders on Friday, January 8th. If you are the parent of a
current sophomore or junior, please be on the lookout for your student to bring home a packet of information at the end of the first
week of the semester. We will meet with current 9th graders in February. Counselors will also be visiting Williams Middle School
(January 19th) and Utley Middle School (January 20th) 8th graders regarding their course selections for their freshman year. There will
also be a Rockwall High School Parent Registration Orientation and Elective Fair on January 21st at 6:30 pm at the RHS Performing Arts
Center. At the orientation, RHS counselors will be available to answer questions from parents of current 8th graders and discuss their
student’s transition into high school. RHS clubs and organizations will also be present to perform demonstrations as well as to answer questions
from students and parents. Finally, counselors and administrators will be holding a parent meeting for rising RHS 9th graders on January 28th
from 6:30-7:30 in the RHS cafeteria.

Volume 1, Issue #5 | January 2016
Topic of the Month
The State of Texas Legislature, in September 2007, enacted House Bill 212, which says “….each school district shall adopt and implement a dating violence
policy” and “….address education for all students and parents”. As part of this bill, during the week of January 6th, 2016, your student will be learning
about Teen Dating Violence and Healthy Relationships. This curriculum will include discussions about dating vs. relationships, red flag behaviors, break
ups, types of abuse and goal setting. Our goal with this program is to help your child develop healthy boundaries in their friendships and dating relationships. It will also give them the tools necessary to identify red flag behaviors in potentially abusive relationships, as well as equipping them with information on how to end these relationships in a healthy and safe manner. Check out the following facts and statistics taken from www.loveisrespect.org.
Too Common
 Nearly 1.5 million high school students nationwide experience physical abuse from a dating partner in a single year.
 One in three adolescents in the U.S. is a victim of physical, sexual, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner, a figure that far exceeds rates of
other types of youth violence.
 One in 10 high school students has been purposefully hit, slapped or physically hurt by a boyfriend or girlfriend.
Why Focus on Young People?
 Girls and young women between the ages of 16 and 24 experience the highest rate of intimate partner violence — almost triple the national average.
 Among female victims of intimate partner violence, 94% of those age 16-19 and 70% of those age 20-24 were victimized by a current or former boyfriend or girlfriend.
 Violent behavior typically begins between the ages of 12 and 18.
 The severity of intimate partner violence is often greater in cases where the pattern of abuse was established in adolescence.
Long-lasting Effects
 Violent relationships in adolescence can have serious ramifications by putting the victims at higher risk for substance abuse, eating disorders, risky
sexual behavior and further domestic violence.
 Being physically or sexually abused makes teen girls six times more likely to become pregnant and twice as likely to get a STI.
 Half of youth who have been victims of both dating violence and rape attempt suicide, compared to 12.5% of non-abused girls and 5.4% of non-abused
boys.
Lack of Awareness
 Only 33% of teens who were in a violent relationship ever told anyone about the abuse.
 Eighty-one (81) percent of parents believe teen dating violence is not an issue or admit they don’t know if it’s an issue.
 Though 82% of parents feel confident that they could recognize the signs if their child was experiencing dating abuse, a majority of parents (58%) could
not correctly identify all the warning signs of abuse.
Warning Signs
Here are some red flags to look for if you think you, a friend, or a student may be in trouble:
 Problems with school attendance, particularly if this is a new problem










Lack of interest in former extracurricular activities
Sudden request for a change in schedule
Unexplained changes in behavior, grades, or quality of school work
Noticeable change in weight, demeanor, or physical appearance
Isolation from former friends
Little social contact with anyone but the dating partner
Unexplained bruises or injuries
Making excuses or apologizing for the dating partner’s inappropriate behavior
New disciplinary problems at school, such as bullying other students or acting out
Name-calling or belittling from a dating partner
