• C&EN celebrated its 90th year of publication throughout 2013
– New strategic plan for C&EN Media Group underway
– Comprehensive editorial audit will guide action plans for C&EN Online
and print redesigns, and other future initiatives
– New hire (VP, Business Development and Publisher) successfully
pursuing new publishing revenue opportunities

• Strategic collaborations with CAS continue
– Tagging of Patent Citations – improved the XML tagging for patent
citations in the ACS Publications journals during the production
process for ingestion into the CAS editorial workflow.
– Improved Author Affiliation Tagging – more granular XML tagging
of the institutional information an author is affiliated beyond just the
institution in the ACS Publications journals during the production
process reduced the amount of manual intervention required by the
CAS editorial staff.
– Author’s Original Document – captures the original content files
submitted by the ACS journal authors and makes the content
available to CAS Editorial Operations for analysis.
• ACS ChemWorx gaining traction
– An innovative, free service for research management that combines
reference discovery and management, professional networking, group
and task management and manuscript preparation in a single
interface, accessible from anywhere.

– Librarian Summits convened throughout 2013 informed our 2014

funding agency plans for public access not yet disclosed
– Legislative activities in US show bipartisan resolve for OA mandates
– Coordination across funding agencies in US and abroad is
increasingly apparent

The final version of record for ACS copyrighted articles is deposited by ACS in
repositories on behalf of authors, in exchange for participation in ACS AuthorChoice:
– ACS deposits the final version of record into repositories
– ACS will maintain a record (think “transcript”) of deposits, and will provide a certification of
deposit for authors
– On the publications website, the article is made open access after 12 months

ACS’ Journals Publishing Agreement allows self-archiving by authors of accepted
manuscripts under certain conditions.
