COURSE
OFFERINGS
Miami Sunset Senior High School offers a Medical Magnet program, as well as eight career academies
for students to participate in. During a student’s ninth grade year, they begin with an entry level
academy course which also covers transitional course content, helping a student transition into the high
school setting. Students who complete four courses within their academy graduate as an academy
completer.
Career Experience Opportunity (CEO):
All students that have completed at least three academy courses, have a 2.0 GPA, and have no more
than five absences are eligible for the CEO Internship. The internship requires one semester of
Workplace Essentials (0.5 credit) and one semester of the Career Experience Opportunity (0.5 credit).
Students are responsible for their transportation. For more information, students should see their
Academy Lead Teacher.
Dual Enrollment:
Dual enrollment is a program that allows high school students currently attending accredited MiamiDade county public or private high schools, or home school to simultaneously enroll in a college course.
The credits that students earn must be used toward both high school graduation and are acceptable
toward a College Associate or Baccalaureate degree, or Technical Certificate.
Dual enrollment is available at Miami Dade College and Florida International University. To be eligible
for dual enrollment a student must:
 Have a minimum of a 3.0 unweighted GPA
 Be a 10th grader or higher
 Passed the appropriate sections of PERT or appropriate SAT/ACT scores
 Obtain permission from parent, guidance counselor and principal
Dual enrollment forms are available in the guidance office.

Waiver of FCAT Graduation Requirement for Students with Disabilities:
Sections 1003.428(8)(a) and 1003.43 (11)(a), Florida Statutes (F.S.), require that each district school
board provide instruction to prepare students with disabilities to demonstrate proficiency in the skills and
competencies necessary for successful grade-to-grade progression and high school graduation.
Sections 1003.428(8)(b) and 1003.43(11)(b), F.S., provide for the waiver of the FCAT requirement for
graduation with a standard diploma for certain students with disabilities who have met all other
requirements for graduation with a standard diploma, except a passing score on the FCAT. In
order for the FCAT graduation requirement to be waived, the individual education plan (IEP) team may
meet at any time after it has been determined that the student has failed to make a passing score on
the Grade 10 FCAT, after having taken the test at least twice, once in grade 10 and once in grade 11.
The IEP team will meet to determine whether or not the FCAT can accurately measure the student’s
abilities, taking into consideration allowable accommodations. In accordance with the Individuals with
Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), a free appropriate public education (FAPE) must be made available to
students with disabilities until graduation with a standard high school diploma or through age 21,
whichever occurs first. In accordance with school district policy, students with disabilities may receive
FAPE until their 22nd birthday or, at the option of the school district, the end of the semester or school
year in which the student turns age 22. Consistent with the provisions of sections 1003.428(2)(b)2.c-d,
and 1008.25(4)(c), F.S., any student who has not achieved a passing score on the FCAT must receive
remediation.

Advanced Global Studies Academy
The Advanced Global Studies Academy follows a rigorous college preparatory course of study which
will provide students with opportunities to develop the intellectual skills needed to make global
connections among all disciplines. Our mission is to create an individualized learning environment
where students can listen, question, read, and make decisions based on sound, ethical principles in
order to thrive as world citizens who actively contribute to the global community.

Medical Magnet
As a student in the Medical Magnet, you can pursue rigorous academic courses in three distinct
strands, Pre‐Medicine, Applied Medical Sciences and Sports Medicine. The three strands prepare
successful completers for further educational or career opportunities. The Pre‐Medicine strand
prepares students for coursework at the postsecondary level and establishes a strong foundation for
future medical school students through the exposure to project‐based learning methods and a variety
of laboratory techniques. The Allied Medical Science strand allows students to pursue interest in
various allied health careers through the study of the life sciences, conducting research, and the
application of inquiry based learning. The Sports Medicine strand provides students with laboratory
and real world field experiences through school‐site internships with Miami Sunset’s athletic teams.
The three strands prepare successful completers for further educational or career opportunities.
Pre-Medicine
Sports Medicine
Allied Medical Sciences
Education Academy
The Education Academy offers an Early Childhood Education strand which is a four year program
where students will work in our DCF‐licensed on‐site Little Knights Preschool. Students have the
opportunity to earn the DCF 40‐hour certification, 5 hour Early Literacy, First Aid/CPR, ECPC/CDA,
Servsafe credentials, and upon completion of the program, nine FREE college credits at any junior
college in the state of Florida. The students will have the opportunity to intern at a neighboring
elementary school during their fourth year in the program. This program allows the student the
opportunity to earn the Gold Seal Scholarship and will prepare students for employment as teachers,
temporary instructors and teacher aides to work in a child care setting.

Academy of Engineering
(National Academy Foundation)
www.naf.org
The Academy of Engineering follows Project Lead the Way’s very rigorous national curriculum. The
curriculum is based on the ideals of project based learning and 21st century skills, which include
hands‐on projects with emphasis on how these newly learned skills can be applied to the workplace.
The curriculum covers almost all the topics included in a four‐year college engineering program.
Students will have the opportunity to learn engineering concepts and theories, and then apply them
in the classroom to examples of current real world engineering problems. Students in this program
must have well developed math and study skills, but, above all, a genuine interest and commitment in
improving their critical thinking and problem solving skills.
