Get Set! Let’s Relay! Beginning in April and all the way through the month of May, you may notice purple ribbons on trees, around poles and on the doors of businesses in every city across the state of Georgia. Those ribbons represent a special event, Relay for Life. Did you know that cancer is the second-leading cause of death in the United States today? That statistic is astounding, but through our Citizens of Georgia Power fundraising efforts, we, along with the entire nation, help fight the battle against cancer. Each dollar raised represents one more birthday for either a cancer survivor or for someone who is battling the disease at this very moment. Every dollar raised brings researchers one step closer to a cure. Last year, Citizens of Georgia Power raised over $206,000 for Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society. Forty teams grabbed their tennis shoes and hit the track with their fellow community members. This year, let’s do it again! Let’s show our communities that we stand united in the fight against cancer and truly exemplify that we are “Citizens Wherever We Serve.” If you are interested in participating in a Relay event or would like to make a donation, please call the state office. We have a list of all Relay events and chapter coordinators. Your chapter president will also be able to assist with any information on Relay events closest to you. Having had family members affected by cancer – one who is battling the disease right now – I THANK YOU for all that you do for Relay every year. Were it not for Relay, the advancements in the war on cancer would not be possible. You truly make a difference in the lives of families everywhere. Together, we WILL help find a cure. Now go grab your tennis shoes and head out to the track, because IT’S RELAY TIME! CCC – Membership Drive The CCC chapter was challenged to increase membership to over 400 members in 2014. On March 11, they held a membership drive that created the energy they needed to surpass the challenge. After the drive, the CCC chapter reached 418 members. Special thanks to all the leaders and CGP officers at the Customer Care Center for their support. The membership drive could not have been such a huge success without the outstanding coordination and leadership of the chapter’s second vice president, Anita Carden. Tifton – Membership Drive The Tifton chapter recently held their membership luncheon at operating headquarters. All area employees and retirees were invited to attend the event. Chapter President Amy Dial introduced the 2014 chapter officers and gave everyone the schedule of upcoming events for the year. State President Krista Pierce was also in attendance and presented a statewide update from 2013. The event was a huge success. The chapter doubled their membership from last year’s number to 66 members. Way to go, Tifton! Customer Care Center Arbor Day Haven House In recognition of Arbor Day, and in an effort to keep Henry green, the Citizens of Georgia Power CCC chapter gave away approximately 500 redbud tree seedlings! The CCC chapter held a clothing drive for the Haven House, a shelter for domestic abuse victims. Thanks to the efforts of the entire CCC, 112 bags of new and gently used clothes were donated! Relay for Life The CCC has kicked off their fundraising for this year’s Relay for Life. They have participated in two community events, including “Purple Power” at Fun Galaxy in McDonough and an “Unchartered Creativity” painting class. During the Purple Power event, 50 chapter volunteers ran a facepainting booth and raised $89 for Relay. The creativity continued during the “Unchartered Creativity” painting class event. Eleven participants “FUNdraised” $140 for the team. Volunteers show off their masterpieces above. General Office – Lunch 4 Lunch The third annual Lunch 4 Lunch project was a great success. Thirty volunteers gave up their lunch breaks to make sandwiches and snacks for the Crossroads Community Ministries of Atlanta. The volunteers made 582 individual sandwiches, and 20 people donated $1,021.64 in monetary and food items for the people in need at Crossroads. In addition to the sandwiches, the folks at Crossroads will receive drinks, cookies, trail mix, chips, pickles and condiment bags (containing mustard, mayonnaise, salt and pepper, a mint and a tootsie roll)! Thank you to Jim Hodges for organizing this project, and to all who donated items and participated. Effingham – Log Landing Boy Scout Camp The Citizens of Georgia Power, along with Boy Scout Troop 665, had a very successful workday at the Log Landing Boy Scout Camp. Nineteen Scouts and leaders from Boy Scout Troop 665 and nine volunteers from Citizens of Georgia Power’s Effingham chapter volunteered for a campsite cleanup event. Volunteers cleared nearly a half-acre of underbrush in preparation for new campsites and walking trails, while other volunteers mowed the area around the Ebenezer Creek Landing and the existing campsites. The chapter also purchased material and built two new picnic tables for the camp. The Effingham chapter has been working with the Log Landing Boy Scout Camp for several years. The main goal for the projects has been to provide a camping area that the Scouts could use for canoeing trips. The group was able to see their goal accomplished when Boy Scout Troop 1 arrived at the site to head out on a canoe trip. Way to go ,Effingham! I will tell you honestly that these have been the hardest years of my life. Being the sole provider and decision maker for four children has brought its own form of unique challenges each day. I can also tell you, though, that having the Georgia Power family, and particularly the Citizens of Georgia Power, to lean on has helped me tremendously. Prior to Steve’s death, he and I both worked to provide the things that our children needed. When it came to the extra things in life that our kids wanted, Steve would just volunteer for the overtime assignments so that we could provide them. In Steve’s absence, Electric Kids has allowed me to continue to provide for them in a similar way. Electric Kids has paid for a wide spectrum of monthly expenses for us, most importantly our medical and dental premiums. While we are seldom sick, having access to medical care is an invaluable benefit. Electric Kids does exactly what its name implies, and that is it takes care of the children. It’s a long list of support, but a few things I’ll mention are braces for Sam, car tires for Lyle, school clothes for Emilee and Josie, and the power bill for our home. While Steve wanted our children to know the value of hard work, it was also his dream that they get a college education. The Georgia Power Educational Assistance program is helping to make this dream come true by providing tuition and books for Lyle at Valdosta State University and for Emilee at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. Metro South – Habitat for Humanity Metro South Citizens of Georgia Power teamed with Southside Church, Kiwanis of Coweta, and Newnan-Coweta Habitat for Humanity to restore a house that will be a home to a deserving family in Newnan. Members of these organizations also worked to improve energy efficiency of this house. Tangela Martin, residential area sales executive, helped coordinate an energy audit for this home through Habitat for Humanity. Jefferson Street – March of Dimes Jefferson Street held a bake sale to help raise funds for the March of Dimes. This year, they are partnering with Metro West for the cause. Kimberly Brewer stepped up to serve as project chair. As a result of teamwork from the board and the generous contributions of the Jefferson Street team, the chapter was able to raise $300.75 in funds to help support the cause.
