Welcome Remarks and Keynote Address
The Value of Narrative Medicine and Narrative Advocacy
Maggie Hoffman
Marsha Hurst, PhD
This presentation will explore Narrative Medicine and its
value in a health care professional’s work. What can we learn
from other’s stories? Narrative Medicine will be explored by
watching, reading, and listening to narratives by or about
children with serious and/or chronic illnesses. Additionally,
the concept of Narrative Advocacy and how a Child Life
Specialist can use narrative to promote change in system will
be discussed. What are the various forums in which narrative
could be used to change policy or practice? While focusing
particularly on the hospital environment, the important current
issue of whether and how the Child Life professional can be
relevant, supportive, and helpful as care increasingly moves
outside the hospital walls, will also be addressed.
Poster Sessions
Please note: Posters will be available for viewing throughout
the conference on the 2nd floor.
