Español 2020 Intermediate Spanish II, Fall Semester 2010, MAIN 119, MWF 1:30-12:20 plus a one-hour per week arranged group session. Instructor: Kevin Krogh, Office: Main 002H, Phone: 797-1589, Office Hours: MW 12:30-1:20 and F 10:00-11:20 Course objectives: The course will provide you with the continued opportunity to improve your Spanish speaking, listening, and writing skills while learning about Hispanic culture and literature, and Spanish grammar. Texts: 1) Ventanas, Curso intermedio de lengua española; Lengua. 2) Ventanas, Curso intermedio de lengua española; Lecturas. 3) Ventanas, Curso intermedio de lengua española; Student Activity Manual. 4) Ventanas, Curso intermedio de lengua española; Student Activities Manual Answer Key. (All are 2nd Edition) Two of the texts are required: Ventanas Lengua and Ventanas Lectura. The other two are highly recommended. All are available for purchase in the USU Bookstore (and elsewhere for probably less money). Additional Course Materials: You will find additional course materials on the USU Blackboard website (http://bb.usu.edu) in the form of PDF files. These materials are not mentioned on the syllabus. Your instructor will tell you about them as needed. You should copy the portion of these materials that the instructor tells you to copy and bring those copies to class (or bring your laptop to class). You will also find your grades posted on Blackboard. Discussions link: The “Discussions” link on Blackboard is an additional way to initiate—and participate in—dialogue with your fellow classmates. The instructor also will “jump in” from time to time. It is highly recommended that you carry on threads of discussion with your classmates often. If you don’t understand something, put your question out there for your instructor and you classmates to answer. Class Procedures: Each chapter of the two main Ventanas texts (Lengua – purple text, and Lecturas – green text) is divided into sections. You are to prepare the pages from the section indicated for each day on the class schedule (Horario de clases) in advance of class. An asterisk (*) on the horario next to the date means that on that day you should bring the Lengua (purple) text to class. A pound sign (#) means you should bring the Lecturas (green) text to class. Only once do you bring both texts to class (December 6th). Class discussions and activities will be based on the materials found in the texts. You should do all the reading and the exercises that your study time permits. Read everything out loud. The idea is that you come to class already having gone through most or all of the material at least once. Class time will then reinforce and clarify that material. Unannounced quizzes may be given anytime during any class to test your preparation of assigned materials. Other quizzes may be given based on class discussion. You can only take the quizzes when the quizzes are given, so please don’t ask to make up quizzes. During large portions of many class periods, you will be working in rotating conversation pairs (sometimes groups). Your preparation for, and participation in, these activities are essential. You will be graded based on that participation and preparation. Student Activities Manual: Although it is not required, you are invited and strongly encouraged to complete the work in the Student Activities Manual for each chapter on your own at your convenience. This work includes three sections: Workbook, Lab Manual, and Video Manual. All three sections are highly recommended. The Lab Manual and the Video Manual are completed after listening to and viewing materials found in the language laboratory (Lab Manual) (The language lab is located in the basement of Old Main, Room #004) and the Merrill library audio/visual room (Video Manual). It is recommended that you attend the lab/library at least twice per chapter, once to complete the Lab Manual and once to complete the Video Manual. All three sections should be completed as follows: First complete the work in pencil without referring to the key. Next, correct your work using the key by writing any corrections in pen above or below what you've written in pencil. You can turn in any activities not keyed in the Activities Manual to the professor. He will check/correct them and get them back to you the following class day. Compositions: The “composición” and “lectura” sections of the Workbook section of the Activities Manual can be especially helpful. Your instructor will be happy to review them with you. Bring them with you when you visit him in his office. Semester-long Group Project: You will participate in a study group of five (5) students that will meet regularly outside of class (a minimum of one hour per week) to prepare one of two plays. The scripts are posted on the USU Blackboard (http://bb.usu.edu). You must read both of these plays before they are presented. Exam #2 will test your comprehension of the plays. In-class Presentation: You and a classmate will prepare and practice together and will together make an in-class presentation in Spanish on one of the days designated on the class schedule. These 8-minute presentations may include visual material but must be given entirely without notes. The presenters will also prepare a vocabulary list or glossary (Spanish/English) with terms in alphabetical order and provide a copy for each member of the class for reference during the presentation. You must give the presentation to one of the study groups (outside of class) before you give it to the class. Grading: Grades will be based on four exams: one for every two chapters (Exams 1,3,and 4) (300 pts.) and one that will test your comprehension of the two plays (Exam 2) (100 pts); on your best 80% of your scores from the unannounced quizzes (230 pts.); on your in-class presentation (70 pts.); on your attendance and participation (100 pts); and on your and your group’s performance during the presentation resulting from the Semester-long Group Drama Project, (200 pts. divided thus: 100 pts.for the group’s performance + 100 pts. for your individual performance). Final grades will be determined by the number of points accumulated against the maximum points possible as follows: 930-1000=A, 900-929=A-, 870-899=B+, 830-869=B, 800829=B-, 770-799=C+, 730-769=C, 700-729=C-, 600-699=D, Below 600=F. 2 IMPORTANT NOTE: A well-completed Student Activities Manual turned in on or before December 8th will raise your grade one grade level (Example: from a B- to a B; from a C+ to a B-). No partial credit will be given for an incomplete workbook (you must complete all three sections and all six chapters.). Class Rules: Only Spanish is to be spoken in class. English will be permitted on occasion during grammatical explanations only (but only on rare occasion) but never during conversation activities. Please be in your seat ready to go when class begins. If on occasion you have to leave early or arrive late, please do so in a manner that does not disrupt class or group activities. Additional Advice: Plan to attend every class and plan to work hard. This is an "interactive" class. No timidity is allowed. Set up a regular daily study schedule, a weekly lab schedule, and a schedule for at least one weekly group study session, and stick to it. Be on time, come prepared and participate willingly and enthusiastically in pair, group, and class activities. Take advantage of the instructor's office hours if you should need or desire extra help. Anything you read in Spanish should always be read out loud. Take every opportunity possible to practice your Spanish outside of class. Regular study groups in addition to the once-per-week assigned groups are a very good idea. 3 Horario de clases: Mantén este guión en tu posesión. No lo pierdas (si lo pierdes, hay una copia en Blackboard).
