Learning Agreement



Once students complete this orientation, they need to
send an email to Dr. Gascon confirming that they have
completed the orientation.
Students may have a phone conference with the instructor
the second week of the semester to check on students’
progress. Please send your current phone numbers (e.g.,
home, work, and mobile) via email.
The instructor will ask students to make an appointment
depending on students’ progress.

Students will be responsible for all assignments, computer
work and examinations.

No make up exams unless accompanied by an excuse
from a medical doctor.
Student Conduct Disclaimer


As with on-campus classes, all students in
HCCS Distance Education courses are required
to follow HCCS Policies and Procedures, the
Student Code of Conduct, the Student
Handbook, and relevant sections of the Texas
Education Code when interacting and
communicating in a virtual classroom with
faculty and fellow students.
Students who violate these policies and
guidelines will be subject to disciplinary action
that could include denial of access to courserelated email, discussion groups, and chat
rooms or being removed from the class.
Academic Honesty
All Houston Community College System students are
required to exercise academic honesty in completion
of all tests and assignments. Penalties for academic
dishonesty (cheating on a test, plagiarism, collusion
on an assignment, etc.) may include, but are not
limited to, a reduced grade, or a "0" on that test or
assignment, a "W" in the course, or an "F" in that
course (see Student Handbook).
Disability Support Services
(DSS)
Any student with a documented disability (e.g., physical,
learning, psychiatric, developmental, vision, hearing, etc.)
who needs to arrange reasonable accommodations must
contact the Disability Support Services (DSS) Counselor at
the beginning of each semester. Faculty members are
authorized to provide only the accommodation requested by
the DSS Office.


Calculators and Formula Sheet


Calculators may be used for homework
or as an aid in the classroom. However,
calculators are never to be used on
examinations (e.g., midterm, final exam)
Any type of Formula Sheet may be used for
online homework and tests. However, any
type of formula sheet is never to be used
on written examinations (e.g., midterm,
final exam).
Cheating


Anyone determined to be cheating on
examinations in the classroom or in the
testing room will be dismissed from the
HCCS.
One warning will be given to any student
suspected of cheating. A second violation
will result in the student being withdrawn
from the course with a grade of “F” an
possible total dismissal from the college.

Course Intent


Distance Education math courses are semester
16-Week courses (10-Week during Summer).
They are equivalent to on-campus courses and
earn 3 or 4 semester hours of credit. Terms of
transferability, no distinction is made on college
transcripts. See the HCCS schedule, Student
Handbook or consult an HCCS counselor for more
details on transferability courses.
Anyone may enroll in distance education courses;
however, they may not be appropriate for
everyone. These courses are independent study
and require an extra amount of self-discipline and
motivation.
College Algebra - Math 1314



Prerequisites. Math 0312 or satisfactory test
score.
Math 1314 College Algebra is designed as a
review of advanced topics in algebra for science
and engineering students who plan to take the
calculus sequence in preparation for their various
degree programs.
It is also intended for non-technical students who
need college mathematics credits to fulfill
requirements for graduation and prerequisites for
other courses. It is generally transferable as
math credit for non-science majors to other
disciplines.
Grading Scale

The final letter grade will be determined
accordingly:
100 - 90
89 - 80
79 - 70
60 - 69

Midterm Review and Exam


A Midterm Review Session will be scheduled
at the end of Week 5 (for Summer
semester) and Week 8 (for a Regular
semester). Check the Eagle Online
Calendar, and click on the date for further
information. The Midterm will cover
Chapters 1 and 2.
Midterm exam will be given on Week 6
(for Summer semester) and Week 9 (for
Regular semester). Check Eagle Online
Calendar, and click on the date for further
information.
Final Exam and Review


The Final Exam Review Session will be
scheduled on Week 8 (for Summer
semester) and Week 14 (for Regular
semester).
A comprehensive departmental final exam
constructed by the Math Department, will
be given at the end of Week 9 (for Summer
semester) and at the end of Week 15 (for
regular semester). The final examination
must be taken by all students. Students are
responsible for purchasing scantron.

Textbook (The hard copy of the textbook is Optional as students

Before you can use McGraw-Hill Connect MATH, you need to register.
A handout will be provided the first day of class for you to register. The
course code is XKJFU-K6PUQ
The hard copy of the textbook, which remember is optional, is College
Algebra, 1st ed. by Miller, McGraw-Hill, 2014
Students may purchase the math software and/or the textbook through an
HCC bookstore or via the Internet. Connectmath.com
Students should start their Connect MATH homework assignments and
tests the first day of class.



Familiarize with Eagle Online home page that
includes calendar, email, syllabus, and more.
Students are encouraged to navigate through
