Conditional Promises

M A I N I DE A S

Some promises have a condition that must be met for the promise to be fulfilled.

God always keeps His part of a conditional promise when the condition is kept.

Faithful to All His Promises

LESSON SUMM A RY

God is faithful to all His promises…but we are not always faithful. Some of God’s promises of blessing are accompanied by conditions that must be met in order for the promise to be fulfilled. God’s promises are completely trustworthy, but sometimes we fail to keep the condition and the promise is not fulfilled because of our disobedience.

This is what happened to Israel. While Joshua led Israel,

Israel walked in God’s ways and received great blessings, defeating her enemies in battle and possessing their land. But after Joshua died, each man “did what was right in his own eyes” and Israel walked in disobedience, worshipping other gods, and breaking God’s commands. When this happened,

God’s promise of success ended because His conditions were not met.

Yet, God was still faithful to Israel, repeating His promise to bless Israel even as long as almost 800 years later.

Jeremiah 7:23—“But this command I gave them:

‘Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people. And walk in all the way that I command you, that it may be well with you.’”

How gracious and good God is. He is eager to bless His people if they would just walk in his ways.

Thank God for His promise of blessing to His people and His faithfulness to His promises. Ask Him to give you an obedient heart. Pray that your child will see the benefit of obeying God and have a desire to walk in His ways.

A S YOU WA LK BY T H E WAY

• Ask your child to explain a “conditional promise” to you.

What is an example of a conditional promise a parent might make? What is an example of a conditional promise in the Bible? If a conditional promise from the

Bible is not kept, who breaks the promise? What do we know about God that shows that He will always keep His promise if the condition is kept?

• What commands or conditions are given in Jeremiah 7:23? What promises of blessing are in this verse? Did Israel keep the condition of the promise after Joshua died? In what ways did Israel disobey God? In what ways do you disobey God? What makes it hard for you to obey God and others? (Pray with your child, asking God to give him or her a heart that loves the ways of God and wants to obey Him.)

ACT I V I T Y

Write about at least one time that you were obedient this week and the blessing that came from obedience. Ask mom or dad to help you with this.

Obedience brings blessing.

Obedience Blessing

Pray this prayer this week:

Dear God, help me to love Your ways and give me a heart that wants to obey You.
