In Two Worlds: A Yup’ik Eskimo Family
Our class will read the story “In Two Worlds: A Yup’ik Eskimo Family,” which
describes how, as time moves on, some aspects of a Yup’ik family’s life changes, while
others remain the same.
After your child has finished reading “In Two Worlds,” you may want to ask him or
her to explain some of the similarities and differences between your own family and
the Eskimo family as described in the selection. Have your child compare and contrast
the past and present lifestyles of the two women in the selection, Mary Anne and Alice,
and complete the chart below. Remind your child that compare means to list things
that are the same; contrast means to list things that are different.

Selection Vocabulary
Your child will study the following vocabulary words in the upcoming week. Please
review the meanings of these words with your child: vast—very great in size; tilted—
past tense of tilt: to raise one side of; withered—past tense of wither: to dry up from
a loss of moisture; inhabit—to live in or on; role—a position or function; luxury—
expensive; freighter—a ship used for carrying cargo; sewage—waste that is carried
off in sewers and drains; lagoon—a shallow body of water usually connected to a
larger body of water; fluent—able to speak effortlessly.
Spelling
Your child will study the following spelling words in the upcoming week. Please review
the spellings of these words with your child: independence, finally, convenience,
wisely, violence, timidly, absence, cautiously, turbulence, silently, emergence,
desperately, excellence, accurately, difference, strictly, reference, beautifully,
competence, directly.

(de lujo—caro, costoso); freighter (carguero—barco que transporta carga); sewage
(aguas residuales—agua sucia que circula por alcantarillas y desagües); lagoon
(laguna—masa de agua poco profunda, por lo general conectada a una masa de agua
