A night after needing six penalty shots to beat Paducah Tlighman, the Lady Vikings went to penalty kicks Tuesday in its 1-0 First District soccer victory over Ballard Memorial on St. Mary’s field. St. Mary (4-5, 3-3 1st District) made two penalty kicks to the one Ballard Memorial (2-10, 0-5 1st District) tallied with Hanna Lurtz and Maria Shockley getting the makes for the Lady Vikings. Kayto Buchanon connected the Lady Bombers’ only penalty kick. “Any win is a good win,” St. Mary coach Alex Walandro said. “Ballard Memorial packed things in the back and played a great game. We couldn’t get anything through. But we did enough to get the win.” The Lady Vikings had plenty of attempts to make a goal in regulation with 18 shots to Ballard Memorial’s 4. St. Mary goalie Sydney Nash grabbed three saves, while her counterpart from Ballard Memorial, Laken Hall, got her hands on 15 saves. “We played hard and similar to the way we played at McCracken County last week,” Lady Bombers coach Donnie Green said. “We couldn’t get a goal across, but St. Mary played good defense like they did last night against Tilghman. But I’m pleased with how we played the second part of that first half.” Ballard Memorial fell to 0-8 overall, 0-5 in First District play with the loss. WALKER NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt quarterback Patton Robinette is recovering from a concussion and is questionable for the Commodores’ first road game this season at Kentucky. “You have to always err on making sure your guy is ready to go,” coach Derek Mason said Tuesday. “Nowadays, with what that position means to you, you need a guy, especially playing in the SEC, that can play at 100 percent. Playing at 85 percent just isn’t good enough, and really when you are talking about concussions you need to be fully passed with something like that.” The Commodores (1-3, 0-2) were up 14-0 with Robinette starting against then-No. 14 South Carolina, and he apparently got hurt at the end of a 10-yard run just before throwing a touchdown pass last week. CHICAGO — Welington Castillo homered and drove in the winning run with a 10th-inning single, giving the Chicago Cubs a 4-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals that tightened the NL Central race Tuesday night. St. Louis’ lead was reduced to 11⁄2 games over second-place Pittsburgh, which clinched a playoff berth by beating Atlanta. With four games to play, the Cardinals, who secured a postseason spot last weekend, still have a magic number of four to wrap up their second consecutive division crown. Castillo finished 2 for 5 with three RBIs, and Matt Szczur also homered for the Cubs. Zac Rosscup (1-0) pitched a scoreless inning for his first major league win. Matt Holliday hit a two-run homer for St. Louis. Pat Neshek (7-2) took the loss. The Cubs had lost four of five while being outscored 45-22 during that span. With the score tied at 3, Anthony Rizzo hit a one-out double off the base of the wall in rightcenter and advanced to third on a groundout by rookie Jorge Soler. Luis Valbuena was intentionally walked to get to Castillo, who drove the ball into the right-center gap to easily score Rizzo. Both starters had pitched well of late, but neither was able to get through the sixth inning this time. St. Louis starter Shelby Miller entered 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA in four September starts, but lasted just 41⁄3 innings, allowing three runs and five hits. He just wants to keep Europe rolling. The European captain spoke in mysterious terms Tuesday about a “template” his team has followed toward dominance in these matches. He didn’t offer many details, though the recent record should be all the evidence he needs. Even though the teams are evenly matched, the powerful Americans have won only twice in the last 21 years. “I don’t see myself as a maverick,” McGinley said. “I see myself as a guy who has been very lucky to ride shotgun on a lot of success, both as a player and vice captain. I’ve learned a lot from the captains. This is not a time for me or Europe to have a maverick captain. It’s a time for me to go in, identify the template, enhance it and try to make it better, roll it out again and hopefully you hand it over to the next captain.” McGinley speaks from experience. The Irishman has played a part in five of the last six Ry- Briefs Smith takes third at MSU tournament der Cup matches, all of them European victories dating to 2002 when McGinley made his debut by holing the winning putt at The Belfry. So what’s the secret? Matt Kuchar, one of nine American players who have only posed with the prized trophy during team photos, doesn’t think there is one. Asked whether too much is made of European dominance because all but two of those victories came down to the wire, Kuchar suggested it was a coincidence. “I can’t put my finger on anything, so that would be random,” Kuchar said. The Pittsburgh Steelers are bringing back the volatile five-time Pro Bowler to bring a veteran presence to a depleted linebacker group. The 36-year-old posted a picture on Twitter on Tuesday morning, writing done deal next to a photo of him signing a contract. Harrison retired as a member of the Steelers less than three weeks ago after spending the 2013 season with the Cincinnati Bengals. He cited the need to be close to his sons. Smith, a senior for the Racers, was in position to perhaps win MSU’s home-course event with a great final round. However, as he reached the final two holes, Smith’s round had practically ground to a halt. Miller Memorial does offer a reprieve with a par-5/par3 finish. If played correctly, these two finishing holes can turn a round around, which is exactly what Smith pulled off. He eagled the par-5 17th and nearly holed out on the par-3 18th for a final round 69. His scores of 68-69-69=206 earned third place. “I didn’t see his tee shot on 18, but I understand that he almost made a hole-in-one,” Racer Coach Eddie Hunt said. “We had the pin on 18 tucked back right on that small tier and he still made a two. I’m really proud of Jordan and how he played this week.” Hunt’s best player right now has recorded two top-5 finishes to start the fall portion of the 2014-15 season. Smith placed fourth at the event in Edwardsville, Illinois, last week. Smith’s excellent play helped the Racers to a third place finish with scores of 292-290-287=869. We’ll see what the doctors say about that.” Robinette also apparently was hurt after starting the season opener, missed a game and came off the bench in the Commodores’ lone win this season on Sept. 13. He came into this season with the most experience on the roster. Robinette came off the bench to lead rallies to wins against Georgia and at Tennessee, and he was the starter in a rare road win at Florida. In limited play this season, Robinette is 23 of 32 for 240 yards and two touchdowns. He also has run for another TD. The team has already completed two of season’s four races in Tennessee at Tul- lahoma (Aug. 10) and Memphis this past Sunday. And Burger King, in the middle of buying the Canadian doughnut chain Tim Horton’s, lost 2.7 percent. In a typical inversion deal, a U.S. company acquires a businesses based in a country where tax rates are lower, then switches the combined company’s address to the foreign country. Executives and operations stay put in the U.S., but profits get taxed at the lower foreign rate. More than $200 billion of these deals have been announced this year, according to analysts at Cowen & Co, a financial firm. That accounts for roughly half of all mergers and acquisitions this year. About 50 U.S. companies have carried out inversions over the past decade, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service. Many more had been considering it. It didn’t take long for the government’s crackdown on a popular corporate tax dodge to have an effect. On Monday, the Treasury Department unveiled new rules aimed at discouraging U.S. corporations from buying foreign companies in order to lower their tax bill. The rules could alter the financial incentives behind some high-profile mergers that have yet to be wrapped up. Analysts are still unsure what the effects of the new rules will be, but investors reacted swiftly on Tuesday and drove down stocks in big companies involved in these so-called inversion deals. The ski resort operator, due to report fiscal fourthquarter financial results today, has benefited from revenue growth at its mountain and lodging businesses. Earlier in the year, a lack of snow in the Sierra Nevada region contributed to lower-thanexpected earnings. Investors will be listening for an update on how resort bookings fared in the May-July quarter. The Mortgage Bankers Association reports today the results of its latest survey on home loan applications. Applications for mortgages have been uneven in the final weeks of summer, a traditionally slow period for home sales. They jumped sharply two weeks ago after falling sharply the week coinciding with the Labor Day holiday. Average mortgage rates have ticked up in recent weeks, but remain below their highs for the year. If you aren’t proactive, nothing will get done. Speak up regarding financial, legal or health matters, and you will bring about an opportunity to renegotiate a deal you aren’t happy with. A passionate approach will pay off. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Discipline and hard work will help you gain respect and a higher position. Do the legwork and find out facts firsthand to avoid anyone leading you astray or taking credit that belongs to you. Love is on the rise. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): You have more going for you than you realize. Take advan- tage of an opportunity to discuss your ideas. Refuse to let a jealous friend or lover stand between you and what you want. Don’t get angry; focus on getting ahead. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Get to the bottom of any situation that is causing you grief. Don’t rely on others to do the work for you. Show initiative and turn your ideas into something tangible. Now is not the time to let someone take over. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Position yourself for stardom. Focus on what you have to do to get noticed. A little effort will go a long way and add to your popularity. You can’t go wrong if you are helpful, understanding and fun to be with. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Check out your current position and you will find a way to make improvements that will help you change your life. You will get ahead if you refuse to let others take over. Show everyone what you are capable of doing. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): You have to divide your attention in order to take care of everything going on around you. Don’t stop or relax until you have everything under control. Letting someone else take care of your business will be your downfall. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): An investment or deal will pay off if you are prepared to wheel and deal. Be creative with your money and you will invite new opportunities that promise greater prosperity. Don’t trust anyone to do as good a job as you. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): A commitment may be your way of keeping the peace, but if you don’t want to honor your promise, your stress level will mount. Romance may be hot, but that doesn’t mean you should jump into something you aren’t prepared to finish. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): You will feel used and abused if you have allowed someone to dictate what you can and cannot do. Speak up and face the music. It’s up to you to counter anything that someone offers that doesn’t seem fair to you. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Take note of what’s going on around you. Don’t take a pass when you should be aggressively pursuing your goals. Participation will give you the chance to persuade others to back your plan. Don’t give up. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Rely on your intuition to make the right decision financially, medically or legally. Look over personal papers and consider what you can do to improve your relationship with someone instrumental in helping you reach your goals. paducahsun.com Variety The Paducah Sun • Wednesday, September 24, 2014 • 7B BEETLE BAILEY DENNIS THE MENACE BLONDIE HI & LOIS BABY BLUES BC CURTIS WIZARD OF ID ZITS DILBERT Crossword Edited by Rich Norris and Joyce Nichols Lewis GARFIELD FORT KNOX PICKLES ACROSS 1 Loop in old Westerns 6 Kind of purpose 10 Future J.D.’s exam 14 Putting green border 15 Welding sparks 16 Sicilian smoker 17 *Arm, to an ace pitcher 19 Turkey or fox follower 20 Opposite of ecto21 “Moonstruck” Oscar winner 22 Valerie Harper role 23 Statement of agreement 24 *Issue that halts negotiations 26 Sluggish 28 What a goldbrick does 29 Cooking aids 30 Cry of surrender 33 *Monetary love, in Timothy 38 French wine region 39 “Hands off!” 40 Deck crew boss 43 Full of spunk 45 *One in the infantry 49 __-Aztecan languages 50 Finish by 51 Bird along the coast 52 Beat it 53 Pinball goof 54 Unswerving, and a hint to the starts of the answers to starred clues 56 Fit to __ 57 “Come Back, Little Sheba” playwright 58 Asian vine leaf 59 Stockholder’s concern 60 Former OTC watchdog 61 Bobrun runners DOWN 45 Like a curled-up 34 Cry of woe 1 “You’ve got carte 35 Sundial number position blanche” 46 Soprano Mitchell 36 Protect against 2 Nondiscriminating 47 Pharmacy heat loss, say immigration policy 37 Made it big, as in inventory 3 Mendelssohn’s 48 How a 59-Across school athletics “Elijah,” for one is typically 40 Mackerel relative 4 Unaided shown 41 Truckloads 5 Tolkien giant 52 Pumped product 42 Conditions 6 Russian country 54 Five smackers 43 Charges for home 55 Ones taking services 7 “Family Matters” hikes: Abbr. 44 Alpine airs nerd 8 Biting ANSWER TO PREVIOUS PUZZLE: 9 WWII carrier 10 Deadly 11 Butterfly, e.g. 12 Voltaic cell terminals 13 Golden Horde member 18 Treated, as a sprain 22 Christ the __: statue in Rio 24 Have little faith in 25 Little stream 27 Gaza Strip gp. 30 Sci-fi vehicle 31 One of the Bobbsey twins 32 A.L.
