need to evaluate what is my product. My product is my skillsets which includes graphic & web design and
development, HTML/XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, Flash Action Script, PHP, and MySQL, Adobe programs
such as Photoshop, Flash and Dreamweaver, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). I also worked
in the sales department for a long period of time where I learned how to communicate with clients. My
willingness to try new things and new technology can be another selling point in this web development
industry. Anyone who needs web design/development solution can be the potential buyer of my product.
In order to stand out from other competitors in this industry, I must have my portfolio website that can well
illustrate my skillsets and strengths.
The position I am looking for at the moment is an entry level of web developer position, and there are few
web design firms in my area that I want to work for. Just like any other web design companies, their
website well illustrates their specialties, design philosophy and some of their previous works. By
reviewing their company website and their previous works, I can explain why I want to work for that
particular web design company. I can also explain how my skillsets can fit in and how I can improve their
product and service. In order to do that, I also have to frequently update my portfolio website and
illustrates my strengths and skillsets.
In the web design and development industry, the vast majority projects are done in a team environment
because it requires various talents and skillsets. And each project requires different skills and
technologies. Because of this reason, many small or medium sizes of web design/development firms
usually hire temporary contractors who can finish the task at hand. They often call someone who they
worked with in the previous project or someone in their network. Therefore, I believe that I would have
better chance of getting the job I want in the hidden market.
I used social networking website such as Facebook and tweeters to get in touch with my former
coworkers and classmates from previous classes. It worked pretty well and I actually got few temporary
part time jobs through networking with my former classmates. We also shared our portfolio websites
together and I received many emails from other web designers and developers. Therefore, I believe that
networking is the best way to find hidden jobs and increase your opportunities to find the position that you
would love and enjoy. I personally believe that LinkedIn, a professional networking website, is the best
way to networking with other professionals in your industry.
DeVry Career Services Office can help me by reviewing my portfolio website and providing suggestions
on how I can improve the site. They can also help me to find potential employers or partners who needs
my skillsets.
