Adding your reading list to Moodle
Adding a Reading List block to Moodle
1) Go to your course home page in Moodle and turn the editing on from the top right of the screen
2) From the left hand column of Moodle, scroll to the bottom of the screen and from the Add a Block
option choose Reading Lists @ LSE
3) This block uses the course code to automatically add the correct reading list from the system into
Moodle. Please note this will only work if your list has been published in the Reading Lists @ LSE
system.
Adding a Reading List to a section of Moodle:
1) Go to your course home page in Moodle and turn the editing on from the top right of the screen
2) Locate the relevant section where you wish to add a reading list and click on Add an activity or
resource (on the right of the screen at the bottom of each section)
3) From the list of activities and resources choose Add a Reading List.
4) Give the new reading list a suitable name (e.g. AN100 –reading list)

5) Moodle will now use your course code to locate your reading list on Reading Lists @ LSE. If you
have made your list public, you will be able to pull in specific sections of the reading list, otherwise
if you list is private it will link to the course entry on Reading Lists @ LSE.
6) Scroll to the bottom of the screen and click ‘Save and return to the course’. The link should appear
with the book icon in section of Moodle. You can move this resource around like any other
resource in Moodle.
Adding a part of the Reading List to a section of Moodle :
If you reading list is marked as private on Reading Lists @ LSE and you wish to add a section of the reading
list (e.g. weekly readings) to Moodle, then follow these instructions.
1) Go to your course home page in Moodle and turn the editing on from the top right of the screen
2) Locate the relevant section where you wish to add a reading list and click on Add an activity or
resource (on the right of the screen at the bottom of each section)
3) From the list of activities and resources choose Add a URL.
4) Give the new URL a suitable name (e.g. AN100 Reading List)
5) In a separate browser tab or window visit http://readinglists.lse.ac.uk and search (using the course
code) for your reading list to locate the list.
6) Click on the Table of contents for your reading list to reveal all the different sections that are
available (e.g. Week 1, Background Reading etc.)

7) Move your mouse over the section of the list (e.g. from this list Lecture One) you wish to copy and
right click to reveal a menu. Depending on which browser you are using choose Copy Link Location
(Firefox) Copy Link Address (Chrome) or Copy Shortcut (Internet Explorer)
8) Return to Moodle and paste the URL into the External URL field. Note the URL will take the form
http://readinglists.lse.ac.uk/lists/XXXX#section-XXXX
9) Scroll to the bottom of the page in Moodle and click on the Save and Return to the Course button.
Your reading list should now appear in Moodle as a link through to the list on Reading Lists @ LSE.
The link will jump to the relevant section of the reading list.

Alternative way of adding a Reading List to Moodle:
If your reading list has a non-standard course code or you wish to link to a reading list with a different
course code than the code in Moodle, you will need to follow these instructions to add the reading list as if
it were an external website.
1) Go to your course home page in Moodle and turn the editing on from the top right of the screen
2) Locate the relevant section where you wish to add a reading list and click on Add an activity or
resource (on the right of the screen at the bottom of each section)
3) From the list of activities and resources choose Add a URL.
4) Give the new URL a suitable name (e.g. AN100 Reading List)
5) In a separate browser tab or window visit http://readinglists.lse.ac.uk and search (using the course
code) for your reading list to locate the list.
6) From the browser window copy the URL from the address bar:

7) Return to Moodle and paste the URL into the External URL field. Note the URL will take the form
http://readinglists.lse.ac.uk/lists/XXXX.html
8) Scroll to the bottom of the page in Moodle and click on the Save and Return to the Course button.
Your reading list should now appear in Moodle as a link through to the list on Reading Lists @ LSE.
