Sex, Money and Marriage: A Complicated Affair

Scrovegni to atone for his father’s sin of usury; dedicated to Virgin of Charity and
to the Virgin Annunciate; site of an annual mystery play of the Annunciation on
the feast day of the Annunciation, March 25th; commission shared with the
Cavalieri Guadenti, a confraternity dedicated to devotion of the Virgin Mary and
to the suppression of usury

folios, 25 full page miniatures on vellum – paired images from the Infancy and
Passion of Christ and scenes of the life of Saint Louis. Upon her death in 1371,
Jeanne d’Evreux left the prayer book to King Charles V. At his death, the book
entered the collection of his brother Jean, Duke of Berry.
