International Rugby Game – New Zealand takes away a win!
Congratulations to our First Rugby Team who hosted Menzies College from Wyndham in the South Island in a game
on Monday afternoon. After a gripping first half and 12 -12 at half time, the New Zealanders strove ahead to finish
with 24-12. The game was played in great spirit and camaraderie with a presentation and celebration afterwards.
Well done to Coach Darren Crilly, assisted by Andrew Skinner, Henry Rose and First Aid Officer Nedra Rose. Thank
you to Lauren Dunn and our tuckshop Convenors who organised the catering. Special acknowledgement to Darren
and his assistants for his Coaching Camp for two days last week. The boys really worked hard and will do well this
season I am sure!
Writer in Residence
Our Year 9 classes have been inspired by writer Ms Nette Hilton. She was able to give them many ideas and
engage them in new techniques! I am sure our NAPLAN results will soar high now as well!
Debating Round 2
Congratulations to all Year 9 Teams, Stephen John, Joshua Connolly, Jordan Wust, Leroy MacNamara, Tish Ford,
Corey Fysh, Kyle Lacey, Isabella Walker, Domonique Serginson, Georgia Aranovitch, Brittany Cooper, Sharriah
McCloy and Georgia Hayes on their win. Well done Coach Ms Galvin, Ms Jillian Dearling and Mr Damian Harvey.
Congratulations to Year 11 Team 2, Ben Wakefield, Michael Beaty, Kyle Bissell and Coach Mrs Deb Holland on
their win against St Theresa’s Catholic College with a Secret Topic. Team 1 had a narrow loss against Genesis
Christian College.
National Conference in Canberra
Last week I had the pleasure of attending the National Catholic Secondary Schools Conference in cool Canberra,
which was very enriching and challenging. A highlight was having four Bishops address us as keynote speakers.
They were all excellent in their messages to us. One was Archbishop Coleridge who is our new Archbishop of
Brisbane. He spoke vibrantly and was very supportive of education and emphasised the importance of our role.
Parents and Friends Meeting
Many thanks to our wonderful group, who are so supportive and have lots of plans with events coming up. They
would appreciate any help available on Saturdays at the BBQ and possible Working Bee.
Australia Zoo Wildlife Warrior Joey Ambassador
We were thrilled to learn that Year 8 student Tegan Lather, recently spent an
exciting day at the Zoo as a result of her raising more than $1000 in the Wildlife
Warriors Readathon. Tegan was a roving reporter for the day and her efforts
were published in the Autumn 2012 edition of Crikey!, which is the official
magazine of Australia Zoo. Tegan has raised $18,000 to date.
During her day at Australia Zoo, Tegan got to report on a patient at the Zoo’s
Wilidlife Hospital, joined the Australia Zoo Rescue Unit on a rescue and spent
time with Sabu, a resident elephant, for a reporter’s encounter. Well done
Tegan!
In closing I would like to welcome new staff members, Mr John Aras Business
Manager whilst Mrs Louise Seaton on Leave; Mr Ben Williams replacing Mr
Jozef Friedman on leave, and welcome back Ms Carolyn Knox, Mr Eugene
Tasker and Mr George Goves.
I was very sad to hear of a staff member Mr Andre Michels, with whom I worked
at St Peter Claver College had passed away suddenly last Friday. Andre was a
great teacher and community member and will be very much missed. He will be
in our thoughts and prayers.
Take care and blessings for the week

Rehearsals on Track for Demanding Production
The cast and crew for StCs 2012 Musical Production Footloose are well underway. A Broadway Musical based on
the 80s flick featuring Kevin Bacon, and more recently updated in a feature film, it's one for young and old alike.
Art Force has been madly designing sets, logos and costumes for the production, and will soon begin creating the
backdrop. Being one of the most demanding shows that St Columban’s has undertaken, all students in the cast
have had to learn to dance, sing and act, often all at the same time. This has been a challenge for most involved but
the staff are very impressed with the enthusiasm shown by all, especially the vastly talented chorus who are heavily
involved in the largest numbers in the show.
Some students undertaking lead roles have never sung in this style before, but are doing exceptionally well. Also,
the rapping talents of Patrick Macrae and Anthin Wilkins have been tested... why you may ask? Well, you'll have to
purchase a ticket to the show and find out won't you!
One thing can be said for sure; this production will be one fun show, for audiences and cast alike!
Date Claimer: Thursday 2; Friday 3 and Saturday 4 August. Tickets are sure to go fast, so watch this space for
news of commencement of sales!

From the Deputy
An Exciting Term Ahead!
As with any term at St Columban’s College, we have a busy Term Two ahead of us. The College would like to notify
our parents of the following major events:
Our ANZAC Day Celebration will take place at midday on Monday 23 April. We are privileged to once again
welcome back our former StC students who have served their country. Our guest of honour on the day will be
Lieutenant Colonel Nan Barr, a Professor and Assistant Dean at QUT, who will address our community. We invite
our parents and families to attend on this significant occasion.
On Tuesday 24 April the College stages its annual Heritage Day. As with last year, the day will commence with the
running of the Silver Slipper after which students will be transported to Bribie Island to participate in our ‘Walk for
Spirit’. All students are expected to attend the College on this day and are also asked to wear their full sports
uniform with hat. They should also bring water and sunscreen. All students are expected to have raised at least $50
in sponsorship money. This will entitle them to a co-curricular point. Lunch will be provided on the day.
Could I request that parents/caregivers return the slip which was part of the letter sent out with reports. Parents are
asked to circle whether they give permission for their student/s to swim or not to swim. If these slips are not
returned it will be assumed that parents do not wish their student/s to swim. Also, parents should indicate
on this same slip whether they will be picking up their student/s from the Surf Club at Bribie Island at
1.45pm.
On Wednesday 25 April, which is our ANZAC Day public holiday, we ask that all our students participate in the
wonderful tradition of the ANZAC March in Caboolture and at other locations. Last year, we had over 250 students
participating at various Marches in the region. Students participating in the Caboolture March should meet at the
gathering point outside the War Veteran’s Home in King Street, Caboolture at 8.30am in full College uniform.
Attendance will gain each participant a co-curricular point.
On May 1 the College will stage its Principal’s Excellence in Learning Awards and Edmund Rice Associate
School Celebration Ceremony commencing at 11.30am under Albion. We welcome the attendance of parents/
caregivers. This will be followed by our Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews which will commence at 2pm in the
Chapel. The Online Portal will be open at 9am on Monday 23 April. Instructions on how to access the portal were
included with Term One Interim Reports. All parents/caregivers are encouraged to seek interviews.
We thank you for your support of your students in these significant College events.

English Department News
With Will and Jane to England and Back: Most insurance forms are in. Thank you.
Mrs Hopkins is currently making a list of what to pack and how to get the best value for your 20kgs in your luggage.
There will be a meeting early next week to discuss the finer details of money, clothes, weather, luggage and so on.
English Tutoring starts next Wednesday.
Creative Writers and Readers’ Inc.
We have been very lucky this week to have Writer in Residence Nette Hilton to speak to both groups. She has also
visited all Year 9 and a couple of Year 10 English classes to speak about her own writing experiences and writing in
general. Nette wrote the draft of her first book by hand and still maintains notebooks for her writing today. She
believes that even with the growth of the eReader, people will still want to feel the luxury of good quality paper in a
REAL book. She is particularly fond of picture books and mentioned the way in which writers can continue to
expand the boundaries. Nette has a book of her own in which she has experimented with different forms of writing
and in her own words she ‘will not budge’ until some publisher agrees to present it the way she has written it.
Nette recommends Stephen King’s how—to book, ‘On Writing’, to get started. She took us through a couple of
‘starters’ for different styles of writing and was very encouraged by the interesting ideas put forward by some of the
students. Nette says the story starts with an action by the main character who has to have some problem; he/she
wants something; he/she has to get to the happy ending; and the book is what happens in between – the things that
happen to stop the happy ending and how the character overcomes those events. Sounds so simple.
She progressed through a manual typewriter that was very unforgiving of mistakes, to an electric typewriter in which,
so her cats supposed, lived a rather interesting mouse, and thence to a computer today. However, she still loves to
write – at first – with pen and paper.
There are several of Nette’s books in our library and her website is also worth a visit.

Look for
Book of the Week: The Innocents by Nette Hilton. When a young girl dies, everyone assumes it was an accident. But
Missie Missinger knows more about what happened that day than anyone could imagine. As the plot is weaved, we
are introduced to several mysterious characters, many of whom are not as they seem. There is the lady who runs
the house Missie and her mother stay in, the other child, Max, and the other boarders, especially the one with the
unpronounceable name. Missie is left to make the biggest decision of her life. Should she reveal all and risk
everything? Or let someone else take the blame?
This book will absolutely take your breath away. I felt as though I was holding mine the entire time, waiting for the
mysteries to unfold, and losing myself in Hilton's stunning thriller. Her words envelope readers with their
faultlessness and beautifully crafted poetic feel.
The Innocents is a gripping read, with twists and turns and enthralling characters.

Hockey
Hockeyroos VS USA
Over the Easter break a group of 23 St Columban’s Hockey players travelled to the Buderim Hockey Centre to watch
an international game of Women’s Hockey. The experience was very exciting with the Women’s Hockeyroos coming
away with a 3-0 win over a popular USA team. This
was a wonderful experience for some of our younger
players who have never seen a live game of hockey
or a game played on turf. The biggest excitement
for the day was gaining the signatures of many of
the women as well as countless photo opportunities.
I thank Henry Rose for his generous time, which he
offered for the excursion. Thanks to Kate Rose and
Sara Western for coming along to support the girls in
this activity. It was a wonderful team bonding time
for both the girls and their coaches.
This weekend’s game will see us play at Ormiston. Please check the College blog and the sports draw on Page 7 of
the newsletter for game times. All girls are expected to arrive thirty minutes before their game. The Open A team
will need to be at the venue one hour prior to their match. Could I take this opportunity to encourage all Hockey
supporters to come along to each of the matches to support our girls in their games.
Finally, all medical forms must be returned to your daughter’s coach prior to the games on Saturday. If you daughter
has not received her form please do not hesitate to contact me this week. All players must ensure they also have
the correct sporting uniform and their mouth guard at each game.
Thank you for your support, I look forward to a successful hockey season.

TAS Awards Trimester One
Trimester One Sports and the TAS swimming carnival were all hotly contested by our students, with a number of our
teams having been very successful. Overall as a College we have finished in Third Place, behind JPC and
Ormiston. It is the combined efforts of all teams that have enabled us to achieve this result, but in particular the
results of the Firsts Girls Tennis Team for their Premiership win and the Girls Second Basketball Yr 10 Basketball
and Yr 9 Boys Volleyball Teams for their Second place achievements. As a result of these achievements we have
also finished in First Place overall for Tennis and Second Place overall for Basketball.
Again, I would like to recognize the fact that this success is determined by the combined efforts of parents, students,
staff and coaches epitomizing the College’s Community Spirit, so thanks to all who have been involved this season
and provided their support. Thanks must go to Nedra Rose for Coordinating the First Aid for the College, as well as
to the P & F for their running of the BBQs.
The P & F is very involved with improvements at the College on a number of levels and have funded projects such
as installing data projectors in classrooms, to providing music and art equipment to helping with seating and the
scoreboard for the main oval. One of their next projects will be re-doing the cricket net area during Term Two.
The P & F would like volunteers of time and equipment to help complete this project. Anyone with experience in
concreting and fencing, or general labour and with trucks, bobcats, excavators and rock crushers – your help would
be greatly appreciated. Please email me if you are able to offer assistance in any way and I can put you in contact
with them.
Congratulations to all our award winners, who through their sportsmanship, fair play and leadership have played an
integral role in the success of their teams. All team members need to be congratulated on their efforts and
achievements and we hope to see a continuation of these high standards over the remainder of the year.
Thanks also to those who took the time to complete the survey at the end of the night and provide us with feedback
about the new format that was used.
