Entrance Award Application
The University of Winnipeg has a variety of awards for all students entering the University for the
first time. Some of the awards are automatically given to students based on their admission
average or selected program of study, other awards, require an application in order to be
considered.
Each award will have its own specific criteria so make sure to read the award descriptions
carefully to ensure that you qualify. Some awards require additional information like an outline of
extra-curricular activities or reference letters - these should be included with your application.
Deadline: Monday, February 1, 2016.
Note: Students must also submit an Admissions application by February 1, 2016 to be
considered for these awards. The award selection process is expected to be completed by
February 2016.

MAJOR SCHOLARSHIP SELECTION
The awards listed below are some of the most prestigious scholarships at The University of Winnipeg. In
order to be considered for these awards, you must be nominated by your high school and submit at least 2
reference letters. Each school may nominate as many students as they deem worthy. Please contact your
high school counsellor for more details. Please select the awards you would like to be considered for.
Alumni Entrance Scholarship Program
Candidates must be students completing high
school in Manitoba. The following attributes are to
be considered in selecting candidates: attainment of
high school academic standing and promise,
noteworthy interest and participation in
extracurricular activities in school and community,
and leadership qualities and strength of character.
Value: $5,000
Garnet Kyle Scholarship
Established in 2011 to provide scholarships to
students from the Rural Municipality of Franklin, in
Manitoba. Students must have a minimum 90%
admission average or higher. This scholarship is
awarded to a student coming from (in order of
preference):
1. The most qualified student undertaking
undergraduate full-time studies from the following
schools in preferential order: a. Roseau Valley
School, Dominion City, b. Other high schools in the
Border Land School Division, c. High schools in
Hanover School Division.
2. The most qualified student undertaking
undergraduate full-time studies who has, within the
last three years, graduated from the following
schools in preferential order: a. Roseau Valley
School, Dominion City, b. Other high schools in the
Border Land School Division, c. High schools in
Hanover School Division.
3. The most qualified student undertaking
undergraduate full-time studies which is, or has
been, a resident of the Roseau Valley High School
catchment area.
All qualifications being equal, a student who has
attended Red River College will be given priority.
Value: $40,000 ($10,000 X 4 Years)
Walter Leatherdale Entrance Scholarship
Established by Douglas Leatherdale, a 1957
graduate of United College, in memory of his father.
They will cover direct education costs for one or
more outstanding students from rural Manitoba,
preferably from farming communities. These
scholarships will be renewable for up to three years.
Value: $28,000 ($7,000 X 4 Years)
Dr. Margaret E. Nix and Slade C. Nix
Entrance Scholarship
Buhler Bursary in Business and Economics
Awarded annually to a full-time student with a
declared major in Business & Administration or
Economics with demonstrated financial need and
satisfactory academic progress. Preference is given
to single parents.
Value: $25,000 ($10,000 X 1 Year and $5,000 X 3
Years)
Marsha P. Hanen Entrance Scholarship
Awarded in recognition of the presidency of the
University of Winnipeg of Dr. Marsha P. Hanen
(1989-99). It will be awarded annually to an
outstanding Manitoba high school graduate who has
made outstanding leadership and extracurricular
contributions in school and the community.
Value: $10,500 ($4,500 X 1 Year and $2,000 X 3
Years)
The Minute Maid Inner-City Leadership
Scholarship for Kinesiology and Applied Health
Established to support students entering their first
year of undergraduate study at The University of
Winnipeg who are planning to study Kinesiology and
Applied Health. To be eligible, students must have a
minimum high school admission average of 75%
and be graduating from an inner-city high school in
the City of Winnipeg. Applicants must have
exceptional involvement within their community or
high school, demonstrating leadership with athletic
and/or coaching programs and services for the
inner-city. Preference will be given to Aboriginal,
new immigrant or students from low income families.
Value: $5,000
The Winnipeg Police Service Opportunity
Scholarship in Memory of Injured and Fallen
Officers
Established by the Winnipeg Police Service to
support educational opportunities for students from
the North End and Downtown Winnipeg high
schools. Consideration will be given to applicants
who have made a contribution to, or have been
involved with, their school or community. These
scholarships are renewable annually, with the
intention that students receive scholarship support
throughout their university degree.
Value: $10,000 ($2,500 X 4 Years)
Established by Dr. Margaret E. Nix, a 1943 graduate
of United College. It will be awarded annually to a
female Aboriginal student who resides in Manitoba
and is entering an undergraduate degree program at
The University of Winnipeg. Value: 1 X $5,000
