“We wanted to start our silver anniversary
year with a renewed emphasis on what makes
Evergreen great—our members and preferred
suppliers,” said CEO Kevin Higginbotham.
“Consequently, we built the new site to do a
better job of highlighting the distributors and
manufacturers who make up the group.
“The homepage features a scrolling tickertape
of member and preferred supplier logos,”
continued Higginbotham. “Each time a user
refreshes his browser, a new set of 10
scrolling logos appears.”
The new homepage also has large banners
that rotate onto the page and can be used to
highlight special events/new programs and
promote other group activities. The banners
are easily updated so the homepage can be
changed regularly to create a new look.
“As we looked at other websites for design
ideas, we really liked how the use of banners
created a dynamic feel,” said Higginbotham.
“Going forward we will be able to easily
update the look and feel of our homepage and
highlight what’s going on with the group.”
The redesign also includes some new
features to the Training Center section of the
website. There is now a page that highlights
alumni of the Evergreen University and the
preferred suppliers who have earned the
George A. Sheatz Excellence in Education
Award.
“The EU Alumni section focuses on the
individuals and companies who have earned
the Evergreen Certified Tool Specialist
designation,” said Wade McCone,
Evergreen’s Training Manager.

James Beckett
2014 is a special year for the Evergreen Marketing Group as it marks our 25th
Anniversary. I had the good fortune to be on
the leadership team of Phillips/Day &
Maddock, one of the six founding
companies of Evergreen, at the time of the
group’s inception. Bob Munson was the
owner and one of the founders.
Although I wasn’t present at the early
meetings among the founders, I did have the
opportunity to talk with Bob on many
occasions about what they were trying to
accomplish. It was not an easy task! A quarter century ago, there weren’t many marketing groups like Evergreen, so there wasn’t
a playbook to follow. Some in the industry
felt threatened by the thought of a distributor
marketing group and actively worked to stunt
the growth of Evergreen.
Articles published in several trade journals
at the time highlight the concern many in the
industry had regarding the start of the group.
Many people quickly tried to label Evergreen
as a “buying group.” One such article
published in the July 1989 issue of
Industrial Distribution magazine quotes
Bob as stressing that groups like Evergreen
are “marketing groups not buying groups;” he
went on to say that the real key to
Evergreen is the “development of strong
business relationships with our suppliers.”
In spite of the odds and against some pretty
strong headwinds, the six Evergreen
founders stayed positive and worked
tirelessly to sell the group concept to other
distributors and manufacturers. A key part of
their early “value proposition” was that
Evergreen would work to train our people
(continued on page 30)
The Training Center section of the new site
provides access to all Evergreen onsite and
online training activities as well as other training
material and documents.
“The page is designed to randomly present
the logos of the companies with people
who are Certified Tool Specialists. Each
time a user refreshes the page, a new set
of logos appear. Clicking on the company
logo then brings up a list of the individuals
who are CTS by year.”
McCone also noted that Evergreen wanted
the new site to recognize the winners of the
Sheatz award. “The logos of each winning
company are presented on the page,” he
said. “Clicking the logo brings up a page of
the winners by year.”
The Training Center section of the site also
provides users with access to a schedule
of upcoming classes, the online training
programs and other training resources and
documents.
The Partners Only section of the website
gives the user access to individual and
company specific information. Users can
update their company information, register
for schools, send broadcast emails and
perform other tasks from this area.
“There’s a lot of information available on
the site without a user having to login,” said
Higginbotham. “However, by logging into
the Partners Only section the user has
access to a more robust level of
information.
“One key feature in the Partners Only area
is the Member / Preferred Supplier
Directory,” he said. “This is a searchable
directory that allows users to find
information about specific companies in
the group that includes a personnel roster
along with email addresses and phone
numbers.”

uncracked concrete.
All Power-Stud+ anchors feature:

Member Spotlight: Lincoln Contractors Supply, Inc.
Milwaukee, WI
According to Vice President Keith
Turtenwald, Lincoln Contractors Supply
(LCS) puts their customers first.
“It doesn’t matter if it’s the company president or the newest
salesperson, when a customer needs attention, they receive it from
the staff at Lincoln Contractors Supply,” says Turtenwald. “It’s been
that way since the contractor supply house opened its doors in
October 1956 near the site of the current main store and corporate
headquarters in Milwaukee, WI.”
An Evergreen member since 1998, LCS operates nine locations
throughout Wisconsin. “In 2001, LCS blazed a new trail by
forming an Industry Alliance with FABCO RENTS, the CAT Rental
Store to establish a ‘one-stop shop’ to combat the national chains,”
continues Turtenwald. “Whether it’s big air, large pump, compaction,
power, winter heating solutions or more, the customer can find it at
LCS. And this is where the Evergreen connection truly shines—as a
member of the Evergreen Marketing Group, LCS carries the top-recognized brands in supplies and equipment for its customers’ needs.
“Too often, sales people become simple order-takers,” says
Turtenwald. “Through the Evergreen Certification Program,
employees gain the knowledge and expertise to fully represent
manufacturer’s product lines and become results-oriented specialists.
LCS is proud to boast ten among its sales staff as Certified Tool or
Operations Specialists (and working toward more).”

DeWalt brings cordless tool production back to the USA
Continuing its commitment to build America, DeWalt recently
announced it is expanding its product offerings built in the USA using
global materials to include more than 600 different cordless power
tools, hand tools and accessories.
“Given a choice between a product made in the United States and an
identical one made abroad,” says Paul Brenneman, DeWalt Regional
Sales Manager, “78 percent of Americans would rather buy the
American product according to a 2013 survey by the Consumer
Reports National Research Center.”
DeWalt began production of its American-built cordless power tools in
its 75,000-square-foot Charlotte, NC manufacturing operations facility
in early October 2013 using global materials. “DeWalt’s investment in
the revamped facility will help boost the local economy and create more
than 250 new jobs,” says Brenneman.
For more information on DeWalt’s initiative to build products in the USA
using global materials and to view a full list of product offerings, visit

DeWalt partners with Wounded Warrior Project
During 2013, DeWalt announced a partnership with the Wounded

and beyond,” said Frank Mannarino, President of DeWalt Professional
Power Tools. “This is the first time where DeWalt has been so closely
associated with an organization such as Wounded Warrior Project.”
The partnership included a donation of over $500,000 in 2013
to WWP and the promise to hire 100 veterans.
As part of this effort, DeWalt featured First Sergeant Matt Eversmann
(Ret.) at a number of customer events, including a special lunch for

Identifying Selling Opportunities
in the Phases of Construction
February 5 – 8. Founders Training Center
This valuable training combined the curriculums of two classic schools—
the School of Product Knowledge and Selling to the Phases of
Construction. A variety of instructors from both member and supplier
companies divided the construction cycle into individual phases and
identified key contractors and products used in each of these phases.
Panel-led discussions on how to sell these products and best practices
on the jobsite combined selling skills and product knowledge into one
class. Students left with a developed action plan to take back to their
territories. This is an extended three-day course and as such, each
student received double credit towards Evergreen certification.
Here are a few comments from students who attended the class:
““I’ve been to a few different trainings, but this was by far the best I have
been to.”
—Michael Topercer, Fasteners Inc / Southwestern Supply.
“Jack [Zenor] is by far the best sales trainer I’ve ever heard speak.”
—Jon Harrell, Ensco Supply
“This is something everyone in sales should take, learn and apply.
Spectacular course with superb teachers.”
—Christopher Thompson, Carson’s Nut-Bolt & Tool Company, Inc.

CADDY Innovation

We Asked. We Listened. We Innovated.
We asked electrical contractors what problems
they face. We listened and heard a consistent
message: Find a better way to mount, wire and
install electrical devices, on the job or offsite.
Then we innovated and built ONE system that
meets many of the different installation methods
and preferences of today’s electrical contractor.

• Rigid back plate functions as a far-side support
and is resistant to bending

Interview (Continued
from page 14.)
Okemura: Prior to Evergreen, other than
vendor PK’s, we never had any
opportunity to take the time and train our
staff. It was all on-the-job training.
Evergreen offers a road map to train and
educate our employees so they can get up
to speed faster. I feel assured from
attending the classes myself that Evergreen
is providing quality training and not wasting
my time and my employees’ time.
It’s not easy to earn an Evergreen Certification, but it’s a
commitment and investment in our employees. It’s a cycle . . . the
employees’ know that Slim’s is investing in them to make them
better. In turn, the knowledge they learn and bring back with them
benefits Slim’s. They feel the pride and satisfaction of earning the
degree they worked so hard for. It makes the employee better and
it makes Slim’s better!
Update: Do you feel, as a business owner, having the opportunity
to provide professional development for your staff sets them apart
from their competition?
Okemura: Absolutely! I believe that Evergreen offers THE most
comprehensive training in a multitude of areas that results in
well-rounded employees. Mahalo!

Evergreen conducted the first of two Schools of Products and
Applications in the Construction Industry in January at the Founders
Training Center in Farmers Branch, TX. The school will be offered

Evergreen’s P&A class is an excellent opportunity for folks new to the
industry to gain a lot of valuable training in a short amount of time.
It also offers veteran sales people a chance to get exposure to new
products and applications they can take back to their customers.
The January class was attended by 23 students representing 11
different Evergreen members. Students received hands-on training
covering metal cutting applications, firestop, power tools,
anchoring and several other products core to our industry.
Representatives from 11 Evergreen preferred suppliers were present.
Here are a few comments from students who attended the class:

Outside Selling Skills With Mike Crandall
January 15 – 17, 2014. Founders Training Center
Most people will agree that selling skills are just as important as
product knowledge in our industry. With that in mind, Evergreen
conducted the Outside Selling Skills Workshop featuring Mike
Crandall.
During the class Mike covered areas such as referrals,
increasing the volume of your business, effective ways to handle
price shoppers along with several other areas. Mike’s unique
perspective of our industry is a result of spending many years
with DeWalt and making countless jobsite calls.
Here are a few comments from the attendees:
“I have been involved in several other sales training seminars
and Mike covered individual scenarios and techniques in far
more detail than other trainers did. Thank you.”
—Ken Page, Cook Iron Store
“I am impressed with how even the smallest of details were
handled so well. It is apparent Evergreen and Mike Crandall are
top notch outfits.”
—Brian Eslinger, Acme Tools
“This is an excellent class!!”
—Jesse McCamey, Bay Tool & Supply

Redesigned Website (Continued from page 2.)
The new site contains a page called the EU Hall of Fame that highlights the
companies and individuals who have earned designation as Certified Tool
Specialists and winners of the George A. Sheatz Excellence in Education
Award.
Information regarding preferred suppliers is available on the site organized
alphabetically and by product category.
In the future, Evergreen plans to add other new features to
the website including member accessible marketing allowance
reports and a portal for Partnership Conference registration and
table top selections.
“This will allow our members to have access to a wealth of
information 24/7.”
“We intend to continue looking for ways to improve the
usefulness and functionality of the site,” said Higginbotham.
Evergreen will hold a series of educational webinars to highlight
the site as new features come on stream.

better than other distributors so they would be
able to sell the manufacturer’s products.
According to Bob, the first couple years were
like pushing a rope. However, the group’s
message did appeal to many distributors and
manufacturers. By July 1990, the group had
25 members and a solid core of preferred
suppliers. Some of the early preferred
suppliers included Powers Fasteners (then
called Rawlplug), Diamond Products,
Coleman Cable, United Abrasives, Black &
Decker and GB Electrical. Each of these
preferred suppliers is still part of the group, and
many other leading manufacturers have joined
over the years.
Seeing how the group has grown over the last
quarter century, I continue to be impressed
with how consistent to the original vision we
have stayed. Our core values remain focused
on professional development for our people
and building strong relationships with our
preferred suppliers. Because this is our
foundation, the group has been able to
successfully weather many challenges over
the years.
Our founders are important to Evergreen and
deserve to be recognized for their
accomplishment. However, today the strength
of the group is a result of every member and
preferred supplier working together to drive
growth and build this unique industry
partnership. The personal involvement of
everyone who has served on the Board of
Directors, the Supplier Advisory Council and
many other committees and task forces is what
has made this a great organization.
So, 2014 will be a year of celebration for
Evergreen! I encourage you to participate and
get involved. Members should circle July 16
– 17 and plan to join the Board and ESAC in
Cleveland for our summer meeting. It’s a great
opportunity to network with fellow group members and actively engage with the Board.
I’ll look forward to seeing you all at the
Partnership Conference in April.
