Importance of Examples: You will only learn how to do vector calculus by doing LOTS of examples. Many examples will be done in the lectures for you. The example sheet problems provide YOU with practice in the techniques. They will give you an idea of what to expect in the exam. THEY ARE VERY IMPORTANT!! Model solutions will be distributed once the homework is handed in. The homework will be marked and returned to you with a grade from 1-5. Course Outline: 1. Revision of Vectors 2. Vector Calculus: Grad, Div and Curl; 3. Suffix Notation 4. Multiple dimensional integrals (double, triple) transformation of coordinates (Jacobian) 5. Vector Integration, line, surface and volume integrals 6. Integral Theorems: Divergence theorem, Green’s and Stokes theorems 7. Orthogonal Curvilinear Coordinates Books: 1. P.C. Matthews: Vector Calculus, Springer Series in Undergraduate Mathematics, 1998. (recommended) 2. W. Cox: Vector Calculus, (Edward Arnold Publishers, 1998). 3. M. Spiegel: Vector Analysis, Schaum’s Outline Series, (McGraw-Hill).
