Systems of Equations
1. Mark owns a bike shop. To rent a bike, customers must pay an upfront fee of $3.
They then pay $6 per hour for each hour they use the bike. Write a rental equation to
determine the cost (C) of renting a bike for a given number of hours (h).
2. Label the axes below h on the x-axis (hours renting a bike) and C on the y-axis (cost
of renting a bike,$).
3. Graph the equation that you found in #1 on the axes above.
4. At Katie’s’ bike shop, customers pay an upfront fee of $12 and then pay $3 per hour
(h) for each hour they use the bike. Write a rental equation for the cost(C) of renting a
bike at Katie’s’ shop.
5. Graph the equation that you found in #4 on the axes above.
6. Where is it cheaper to rent a bike at Mark’s bike shop? Where is it cheaper to rent a
bike at Katie’s bike shop?
7. Janice rents a bike form Katie’s shop and her friend Delilah rents a mike from Mark’s
shop. Is it possible for Janice and Delilah to rent the bike for the same number of hours
and pay the same price? Explain.
