Northern Ireland’s new Woodlands Juvenile Justice Centre required a highly secure, fully integrated solution to protect young people during their stay, as well as protect the centre’s 500 care staff.
To create a secure environment, system integrator ADT installed the
CEM AC2000 SE (Standard
Edition) security management system with CCTV, digital video recorders, intercoms, intruder panels, remote radio pagers and perimeter detection. The new state-ofthe-art centre is now fully operational with almost 500 doors secured using proximity technology throughout activity rooms, custodial units and six high-security accommodation wings.
“The CEM AC2000 SE system was the ideal choice for the new prestigious centre,” commented Mark McAteer,
ADT’s National Account
Manager, Northern Ireland.
“With its high level of system resilience and integration capabilities, AC2000 SE communicates seamlessly to the facility’s building management system using
OPC protocol providing the client with a highly secure, single solution for advanced monitoring and control.”
The highly resilient security system features a Linux based central server and distributed layers of intelligence using
CEM’s S9000 range of IP controllers. Hand recognition biometric readers were also integrated with the AC2000
SE system to provide a further layer of security at critical area points. Alarms can now be monitored and
ID security badges issued so that care staff can only pass through secure areas upon a valid card swipe and hand geometry biometric reading.
To add a double layer of security, CEM developed a customised door configuration so that doors remain shut until an authorized cardholder requesting access is verified via CCTV by guards at a central security control room. Once verified, guards then issue a CEM ‘One-Shot’ command via the AC2000
SE software, which grants access by releasing the door remotely.
To further fulfil client requests, CEM designed a complex interlocking solution for high security areas to ensure that only one door within an interlock group be opened at any one time.
This means that when a valid card is presented and the requested door is unlocked, other doors within that zone group remain locked. Once the initial door has been closed, the cardholder can then present a valid ID card at an intercom reader and verbally request which exit door they would like the security control room staff to open.
Working in collaboration, ADT and CEM have successfully supplied the new centre with a state-of-the-art security solution.

Durham Tees Valley Airport is part of the Airports Division of Peel Holdings and is currently undergoing a £56 million expansion programme to reinforce its position as one of the fastest growing regional airports in the UK.
As part of this investment, the CEM AC2000 AE (Airport
Edition) security management system, that has been successfully installed at Robin
Hood Airport since 2005, is now being implemented to enhance security and operations for the benefit of passengers, staff and airlines.
“The airport solution was ideal for Durham Tees Valley
Airport as it will secure airside and landside doors using CEM IP-enabled card readers which have the added benefit of seamlessly fitting existing cabling and IT infrastructure at the airport” commented Alan Inkster,
Managing Director, Advanced
Integrated Systems.
Ideal for the airport environment, advanced
CEM EtherProx card readers, connect directly over Ethernet and offer high-end reader functionality such as LCD display, keypad and internal database for unique offline card validation at the door at all times - ensuring the highest level of system stability. The EtherProx readers also feature airportspecific ‘door modes’ eg. passenger and lobby mode to control passenger throughput and to enhance airport operations.
“A key factor in this project is that the Durham
Tees system will be fully integrated with the Robin
Hood Airport system, with staff able to gain access at both airports using one ID security pass” commented
Andrew Fulton, Business
Development Director of Tyco
International’s CEM products.
By using the CEM AC2000
VIPPS (Visual Imaging & Pass
Production System), security personnel can capture images and signatures to design and print professional staff
ID passes.
