This distinction will allow us to broaden the international dimension of our activities, enrich the dialogue about diversity and identity, and prolong the celebration of the book in Wroclaw till April 2017. The Flow Quartet An important part of the 2016 celebrations are four exceptional projects - which have been collectively called The Flow Quartet: Bridge Builders, Spirits of Wroclaw, Flow and Sky Web. These biggest artistic events of the year will tell the story of Wroclaw and explore it from the perspective of contemporary Europe. The quartet, directed by Chris Baldwin, will present the multitude of voices through which Wroclaw will tell its own story to its citizens, Poland, Europe and the whole world. 12 The Spanish Night with Carmen - Zarzuela Show. 18 June 2016 A grand musical performance directed by Waldemar Zawodziński and Ignacio Garcia will take place in the Municipal Stadium in Wroclaw. Based on the plot and music from Georges Bizet’s opera „Carmen”. The climax of the show will be a presentation of zarzuelas, film screenings about Spain, as well as a performance of 500 artists selected in competitions by the opera, and Spanish bands. 13 International Jazz Day 30 April 2016 The project highlights the important role of European musicians in jazz history. It will encompass the whole city, especially the Centennial Hall and Pergola, the Four Dome Pavilion, the National Forum of Music and the Four Temples District. The special guest will be Urszula Dudziak. 14 European Film Awards 10 December 2016 The 29th European Film Awards, the most important distinctions awarded on the Old Continent. Between September and December 2016, New Horizons Cinema will screen films awarded at previous editions, and those nominated in 2016. 15 International Theatre Olimpics (Dziady. Recykling, Lower Silesian Theatre Platform, More than Theatre, Eastern Line, Polish Theatre Showcase) 14 October 2016 – 14 November 2016 An international theatre festival presenting the achievements of the greatest theatre artists from around the world. The motto of the 7th edition will be “The World as a Place of Truth”. 16 European Capital of Culture Housing Estate Nowe Żerniki 2013 - 2016 A project of a total and coherent housing estate equipped with a set of services to fulfil all the inhabitants’ needs: from a service and commercial base, public space, private space, to a community centre and school. 17 Artists and their works Presentation of artists and their works, the creative process with the artist in the center. 18 Eduardo Chillida. Sonoridades 15 January-13 March 2016 An exhibition of works by Eduardo Chillida from the Basque Country. The idea of the project is to present relationships between Chillida’s work and music. Therefore, there will also be an accompaniment of sound installation by the composer Gorka Alda and an opening concert of José M. Sáncheza-Verdú. 19 Loving Vincent Premiere: 28 April 2016 The first ever feature film produced with paint-oncanvas animation technique. It tells the story of the unique life and mysterious death of one of the most outstanding 19th century painters, Vincent van Gogh. 20 Patchwork. The Work of Jadwiga Grabowska-Hawrylak June – September 2016 An exhibition presenting the very diverse oeuvre of Jadwiga Grabowska-Hawrylak, mainly associated with a residential and commercial complex at Grunwaldzki Square in Wrocław. 21 Literary Icons January 2016-22 April 2017 In 2016, all cyclical events related to book in Wroclaw will have a unique, celebratory character. It will be additionally strengthened by the participation of eminent writers from abroad, whom we want to invite for important events and literary festivals, in this way making them attractive also for audience from around Europe. Great Stars at the NFM 2016 World-class stars of classical music will perform on one of the most modern, and at the same time the youngest stage in Europe – the National Forum of Music in Wroclaw. The NFM will host singers, instrumentalists, conductors, symphonic orchestras, choirs, and chamber orchestras. 23 Special Editions Well-known festivals and events. Good brands of Wroclaw culture. 24 Jazz on the Odra Festival 27-29 April 2016 One of the biggest and oldest jazz festivals in Europe will host both European and world jazz stars. It will be accompanied by fine arts and photography exhibitions, outdoor events by the Odra and in the Old Town. 25 T-Mobile New Horizons International Film Festival 23 July – 2 August 2015, 21-31 July 2016 A festival of films going beyond the boundaries of traditional cinema. As part of the European Capital of Culture program, the festival will be accompanied by a Blow-up competition for filmmakers from Lower Silesia. 26 SURVIVAL Art Review June 2016 A presentation of contemporary art outside of traditional exhibition spaces. This year’s edition, entitled “Prohibited Acts”, will be held in a police barracks in Wroclaw. 27 European Literature Night in Wroclaw 23 April 2016 This innovative project focused on the promotion of reading among wide audiences presents hitherto unpublished works of contemporary writers from various countries. During one night, public readings are performed by well-known personalities in unique venues around the city centre, often not associated with literature. Thanks Jimi Festival 01 May 2016 Guitar Guinness Record Leszek Cichoński and a several thousands of gutiarists will play the song Hey Joe. In 2016, thanks to an Internet transmission, the festival will reach a few thousands guitarists around the world. 29 Jidysz and Ladino 05-08 May 2016 The project dedicated to the Jewish heritage and aimed at sharing it with a wide audience, consisting of masterclasses, lectures and a gala concert, will stress the importance of jidysz and ladino – the languages of European Jewish minorities which are a link between Eastern and Western Europe. 30 Education and activation Active culture. Social and community projects. 31 Wroclaw Commenting Choir 2016 The project is dedicated for citizens who feel responsible for their city and agree that culture is most of all a way to be together and an idea for spare time. It encompasses a series of meetings, rehearsals, and performances culminating in a grand scale concert in 2016. 32 Wroclaw – Backyard Door 2015-2016 The realization of tens of artistic interventions in neglected parts of Wroclaw, primarily in backyards. 33 Bibliopolis. City As a Library 1.01.2016 – 22.04.2017 The uniqueness of the project stems from the fact that it will be created by schoolchildren. Young people will create the Literary Web Portal themselves, so they will not just be receivers of imposed content, but they will freely shape and present it- in accordance with the main idea of the Internet. The Voice of the Excluded 5 – 14 August 2016 The idea of the project implemented by Michał Znaniecki and the Jutropera Foundation team is cooperation of socially excluded groups with professional artists to create theatre and musical performances. 35 Polish Cinema for Beginners 2015 - 2016 A series of screenings of the most interesting works of Polish cinema with English subtitles, directed to foreigners living in Wroclaw. 36 Singing Europe 08 August 2015, 23 July 2016, 30 July 2016, 06 August 2016 The main idea of the project is a meeting of several dozen choirs from Europe and a presentation of opera works, oratories and a capella programs, in cooperation with the experienced artists. The participants will be young amateur singers, as well as stars from around the world. 37 Reflections Conferences, seminars, debates and congresses 38 VoicEncounters (Giving Voice) 15 – 24 kwietnia 2016 A project dedicated to vocal techniques and the idea of voice as a means of communication going beyond the borders of language and cultures. A conference with the participation of the Royal Shakespeare Company about the pedagogy of voice. 39 Making Tomorrow’s Theatre 27 June – 3 July 2016 Biennale meetings and workshops of acting departments and schools from the whole Europe. Some works: an exhibition of the Berlin STURM Gallery, activities of avant-garde groups ARTES and ANUM, Ukrainian avant-garde graphic art from the 1920s and 1930s, the work of members of the Formist movement and the first exhibition of the New Generation. 46 Wild West. The History of the Avant-garde of Wroclaw June-December 2015, January-August 2016 The exhibition presents works of art, films, photographs, objects and sound recordings- almost 500 objects from the area of visual arts, architecture, urban studies, theatre, film, design and everyday life in Wroclaw from between the 1960s and today. 47 Wroclaw in the International Cities of Refuge Network 2016 ICORN is a network of cities from around the world advancing freedom of expression, and defending writers persecuted for political reasons. Each city offers temporary shelter to one of the writers, providing security, good living conditions and the possibility of unlimited creative work.
