Reading Task 10: IPad (Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPad.) 01 The iPad is a tablet computer designed and marketed by Apple for Internet browsing, media consumption, 02 gaming, and light content creation. Released in April 2010, it established a new class of devices between 03 smart phones and laptops. As of May 3, 2010, Apple had sold 1 million iPads. 04 05 06 07 Similar to the older iPod Touch and iPhone, the iPad runs a modified version of the iPhone operating system and is controlled by a multi-touch LCD sensitive to fingertips, instead of a stylus as with earlier tablet computers. It runs iPad-specific applications as well as those written for the iPhone and iPod touch, including e-book readers. 08 The iPad uses Wi-Fi or a 3G data connection to browse the Internet, load and stream media, and install 09 software. A USB cable is required to sync the iPad with iTunes on a personal computer. 10 11 12 13 Apple's first tablet computer was the Newton MessagePad 100, introduced in 1993, which led to the creation of the ARM6 processor core with Acorn Computers. Apple also developed a prototype PowerBook Duo-based tablet, the PenLite, but in order to avoid hurting MessagePad it wasn’t sold. Apple released several more Newton-based PDAs, and discontinued, the MessagePad 100 in 1998. 14 15 16 17 18 19 Apple re-entered the mobile-computing market in 2007 with the iPhone. Smaller than the iPad but featuring a camera and mobile phone, it pioneered the multitouch (touch screen) interface of iPhone operating system. By late 2009, the iPad's release had been rumored for several years. Mostly referred to as "Apple's tablet", iTablet and iSlate were among speculated names. The iPad was announced on January 27, 2010 by Steve Jobs at an Apple press conference at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. Three days later, at the 52nd Grammy Awards, Stephen Colbert used an iPad to announce the nominees. 20 21 22 23 24 Apple began taking pre-orders for the iPad from U.S. customers on March 12, 2010. The Wi-Fi version of the iPad went on sale in the United States on April 3, 2010. The Wi-Fi + 3G version was released on April 30. 3G service in the United States is provided by AT&T and sold with two prepaid contract-free data plan options: one for unlimited data and the other for 250 MB per month at half the price. The plans are activated on the iPad itself and can be canceled at any time. (1) DECIDE WHETHER THE FOLLOWING STATEMENTS TRUE (T) OR FALSE (F) IN RELATION TO THE INFORMATION IN THE TEXT.
