God is The giver of life 3/14 We sin and this leads to death But God… Take Home Sheet – Years 4 to6 Bible Story Summary The Drumbeat of Death, Genesis 5:1-6:8 In the Bible, family trees are important. We heard about one today: Adam’s. His family tree is particularly important to us because of the promise God made in Genesis 3. The snake, God’s enemy the devil, had tempted Adam and Eve to turn away from God. But God promised that someone from their family tree would come to earth and crush the snake. Who could it be? We need to know, because we want to find out who will destroy God’s enemy the devil for us. Whilst looking for the snake-crusher, Adam’s family tree shows us another enemy that needs defeating for us: death. It keeps saying, ‘and then he died…and then he died…and then he died.’ Sin leads to death. This is what God warned back in Genesis 2:17. God has kept his word. If you turn from God, the generous creator who gives life, you will die. Death is God’s punishment for sin. But like with Genesis 3, when God brings judgement, he also gives us hope. One person in the family tree broke the pattern of death. One man in the family tree did not die: Enoch. The story gets worse before it gets better. As more and more people were born on earth, sin spread more and more with them. Sin is not like an illness that people catch. Sin is a problem we all have inside us. Sin comes from our heart and is very serious. So much so that God decided to wipe out everything from the earth. God judges the earth. But one man stood out: Noah. In the midst of judgement, God gives hope again, through one man. Next time we will hear what happened to Noah. How long did Enoch do this for? - Look at verse 24. What did Enoch do with God? What happened to him? How does this break the pattern of the rest of the family tree? In the New Testament (Romans 6:23) God says, ‘the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord.’ - According to this verse why is there death? How can we have life forever?
