Bush, of course, recorded his album while his duo Sugarland is on hiatus. The four who preceded him are John Rich, who did his solo project during a threeDUNN BUSH year vacation from Big & Rich, and three vocalists whose duos were officially retired: Ronnie Dunn of Brooks & Dunn, Radney Foster of Foster & Lloyd and Wynonna Judd of The Judds. It really is something of a club. Rich, who was a member of Lonestar prior to the formation of Big & Rich, has co-written songs with the Bellamy Brothers and Thompson Square. And he felt a kinship with them related to their status as a twoperson team. “It’s kind of an unspoken thing that you know what that is to be in a duo,” says Rich. That unspoken thing is a mixture of compromise and responsibility. For a solo act, one person essentially directs the ship and takes the glory or criticism alone. In a group, the experiences are shared, but the responsibilities can be spread thinly enough that it’s possible for one or more members to have modest involvement with the non-creative elements and still make it work. For a duo, the accountability is much more palpable. “In a duo, it gets really intense,” says Foster. “It’s like a marriage. You spend so much time together, and you learn each other’s foibles and strengths and ultimately, that’s what makes part of the magic.” It might actually be RICH more difficult to hold a duo together than to keep a marriage going. “Your marriage is not under a microscope,” notes Rich. “Your career is.” That’s part of what makes Bush’s situation rather unique. Sugarland’s first album was recorded as a trio, which became a duo after Kristen Hall departed in 2005. Whereas other duos — such as Maddie & Tae or Brothers Osborne — typically have their names branded with the duo, neither Bush nor Jennifer Nettles is part of the Sugarland branding. Neither has been photographed on the cover of a Sugarland album, and Nettles is always the lead voice, giving Bush some anonymity. BUSH: DAVID MCCLISTER; DUNN: RUSS HARRINGTON INSIDE MONDAY UPDATE FOSTER: MARSHALL FOSTER BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE “In a lot of ways, I’m really being treated as a new artist by the listener,” says Bush. “I don’t think they recognize who I am as a listener, and the name recognition is not very high, either.” In fact, the association is distant enough that when Bush took part in a March 19 concert in Jupiter, Fla., sponsored by WIRK West Palm Beach, one listener approached him afterward asking why he played so many Sugarland songs in his set. Even when he explained that he had written them, the fan still seemed confused. But that kind of confusion isn’t limited to harmony singers. Though Dunn was the lead voice in the vast majority of Brooks & Dunn singles, fans have had a difficult time thinking of him separate from the duo. He didn’t expect that response when he went solo, though in retrospect, he can recall having the same sort of haziness about one of his predecessors. “There was a time when the Judds were out running strong, and I’m a country music fan. I didn’t know Naomi from Wynonna; I just knew it was the Judds,” recalls Dunn. “It is an eye-opener when you kind of realize, I’m ‘Brooks & Dunn’; I’m not Ronnie Dunn. It’s an interesting phenomenon.” FOSTER Complicating the phenomenon is f inances. There’s a progression in attitudes that accompanies a change in economic status, and Bush’s debut singles unintentionally called attention to that change. In Sugarland’s debut, “Baby Girl,” the first chorus finds the protagonist asking her parents for money: “I’m so broke that it ain’t funny.” In “Trailer Hitch,” Bush literally aspires to “give it away.” Dunn has felt that change in attitude. Early in their career, Brooks & Dunn said yes to opportuWYNONNA JUDD nities without hesitation. As they became more successful, they learned to become more selective. It’s not something that’s easily unlearned. “Hunger’s the biggest motivator that there is,” says Dunn. “That may be a not-so-subtle dynamic that’s involved in the process, you know. You just have to really, really want it bad. Every single thing you did [in the beginning], everything you wrote, every show we played, we thought everything hinged on that. It was just make or break with everything that you did.” Foster had that hunger created for him when he went solo. He ended up in a disagreement with his label and publisher over language in his contract, and his royalties were frozen when he split with Bill Lloyd. “I’m going from making boatloads of money on royalties, and on advances with the publisher, and on the road with Bill Lloyd, to zilch,” he says. Fortunately, Foster was able to start opening shows for such acts as Vince Gill and Mary Chapin Carpenter that put some money in his pocket while requiring minimal expenses. BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE MARCH 30, 2015 | PAGE 4 OF 13 he quickly built a strategy for his transition, using more traditional country in his solo sound than he had in the duo. “I didn’t just go out and go, ‘Oh, it’s Foster & Lloyd, but it’s only one voice,’ ” he says. “That would have been a disaster. I knew I needed to make a radical change in what I was doing and how I was doing it.” To date, Foster, Dunn and Judd have committed to their solo careers, though all have reteamed on occasion with their former musical partners. Even Dunn, who will reunite with Kix Brooks in June for a Las Vegas residency with Reba McEntire, remains signed to Big Machine’s Nash Icon as a solo act. Meanwhile, Bush and Rich entered their solo careers vowing they were a simple departure from the duos they intended to continue. The outside world reacted with skepticism or confusion — and with good reason. The professional divorces of Porter Wagoner & Dolly Parton, Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs, The Everly Brothers, The Louvin Brothers and The Stanley Brothers were all acrimonious. Predictably, interviewers have felt compelled to ask Rich and Bush if their splits are permanent. “Like we say in Texas, it’ll give a woodpecker a headache,” says Rich with a laugh. “It’ll wear you out.” Both duos still exist, though Rich and Bush seem to view their solo forays differently. While Big & Rich will continue to do the occasional side project (Big Kenny, for example, is currently working on a TV pilot apart from the duo), Rich says it’s unlikely that he’ll record as a solo artist again. “Standing onstage without Big Kenny is not as fun as standing onstage with Big Kenny,” he reasons. Bush, however, thinks of his solo adventure as a parallel project to Sugarland, and he hopes both will be alive and kicking another decade from now. “There’s no sadness involved here,” he explains. “We’re not lamenting the death of anything.” If Bush is indeed able to keep both the solo act and the duo going, he’ll be a member of an even more exclusive club. The March 25 announcement that the Country Music Hall of Fame is adding the Oak Ridge Boys and The Browns was a feel-good moment by itself. But combined with the next night’s Kenny Chesney tour launch, it was a real reminder of country’s progress during the last 60 years. When The Browns toured along with Elvis Presley in the mid-1950s, it wasn’t unusual for a country group to scrunch up in a Cadillac with the standup bass stretched across the seats from the front windshield to the back. Many — if not most — dates were at barrooms and gymnasiums, and artists were expected mostly to stand and sing. It’s why Presley’s hip-shaking was such a cultural shock — in addition to testing societal norms, it also shook up the visual expectations of concert-goers. Fast forward to the early 1980s, when the Oaks hit their crossover prime with “Elvira” and the standards changed again. Country acts had begun to play arenas, and for the ticket-buyers in the top rows especially, some motion and dynamics made a big difference. The Oaks’ use of four very different fashions — from Richard Sterban’s natty apparel to William Lee Golden’s mountain-man appearance — provided some contrast. Joe Bonsall’s constant movement added to the effect, and the band was the first to incorporate some of the more modern lighting effects that were being introduced in pop and rock. “I remember sitting around the first time we decided we wanted to buy lasers [and] smoke,” said Bonsall at the Hall of Fame announcement. “And ‘Get in touch with Genesis, man. We want to get some of them Vari-Lites like those guys use. Let’s make this thing really big.’ That was long before the groups of today did arenas.” It was even before the use of video became prominent in country concerts. Chesney took the lighting, the movement and the videos to an even bigger level with his March 26 concert at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. For the Big Revival Tour, Chesney employed a minimum 140 lights, a ramp that took the action deep into the floor seats and four large video screens — the largest is perhaps 36 feet by 15 feet — all of it enhancing the frenetic, ringleader role that Chesney embraces. It’s one thing to impress an audience. It’s another to involve the crowd, and that’s what Chesney did quite successfully. His catalog — which balances love, nostalgia, partying and personal development — is designed to connect. And with the videos showing even the people in the back row the nuances of his facial expressions, the experience is much like attending a movie — or, to be specific, a series of small movies. The Kiwanis halls and high-school stages of country’s early years seem quaint in comparison. There’s no doubt that Chesney makes a much better living than The Browns did in their time. But the goals were the same: to use the songs, the voices and the available performance space and engage an audience. ON THE CHARTS ZAC BROWN BAND: PAUL MOBLEY Zac Brown Band Back ‘Home’ At No. 1; Tyler Farr, Billy Currington Hit Top 10 Zac Brown Band completes its fastest flight to No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart (dated April 11), as “Homegrown” (Varvatos/Republic/Big Machine Label Group/Southern Ground) rises 3-1 in its 11th chart week. The song gains by 3 percent to 42.3 million audience impressions, according to Nielsen Music. It also crowns Country Indicator, where it likewise climbs 3-1. The group’s 11th Country Airplay No. 1 rewrites its quickest sprint to the summit. The band had previously reigned in as few as 13 weeks with 2010’s “As She’s Walking Away” (featuring Alan Jackson). Not only that, “Homegrown” logs the speediest trip to the apex in more than two years. Blake Shelton hit No. 1 in just 11 weeks with “Sure Be Cool If You Did” on the March 30, 2013 chart. No song has ZAC BROWN BAND climbed to No. 1 faster since Jason Aldean’s “Take a Little Ride” zoomed to the top perch in 10 weeks (Oct. 6, 2012). Zac Brown Band first led Country Airplay with its debut entry, “Chicken Fried,” on the Dec. 6, 2008 chart. The band boasts the most No. 1s among groups since that date, with only two acts having logged more than 11 leaders in that span: Shelton (15) and Aldean (12). (Luke Bryan has also notched 11 No. 1s in that stretch.) Top local audience contributors for “Homegrown” in the tracking week ending March 29: KKGO Los Angeles (1.1 million impressions), WUBL Atlanta (872,000), WNSH New York (852,000), WKLB Boston (814,000) and KILT Houston (804,000). As noted in this column on March 9, Zac Brown Band is also scaling Billboard’s Mainstream Rock airplay chart for the first time with “Heavy Is the Head” (featuring Chris Cornell); the track blasts 10-5 in its fourth week on the ranking with an 18 percent increase in plays. Both “Homegrown” and “Heavy” usher in Zac Brown Band’s album Jeckyll + Hide, due April 28. As previously reported, the set is the band’s first effort resulting from Southern Ground’s partnership with Varvatos, Big Machine and Republic, which Billboard exclusively revealed on Sept. 20. (Upon the association’s announcement, all Zac Brown Band members sported designs created by fashion master John Varvatos. “He’s got that on lockdown like nobody else,” said Brown of Varvatos’ stylistic vision. Of Brown, Varvatos responded, “He looks great, doesn’t he?”) Meanwhile, Tyler Farr scores his third Country Airplay top 10, as “A Guy Walks Into a Bar” (Columbia Nashville) lifts 11-9 in its 35th chart week (27.9 million, up 7 percent). Farr reached No. 3 with each of his first two top 10s (also his two prior singles): “Whiskey in My Water” (July 2014) and “Redneck Crazy” (October 2013). Billy Currington also returns to the Countr y A ir play top 10 with “Don’t It” (Mercur y), which ju mps 13-10 in its 23rd week w it h an 11 percent gain to 22.7 million. The song is Currington’s 13th top 10 and follows his seventh and eighth No. 1s: “Hey Girl” (October 2013) and “We Are Tonight” (August 2014). Currington first reached the top tier with his debut entry, “Walk a Little Straighter,” which rose to No. 8 in 2003. With “Don’t It,” he makes his quickest trip to the top since eventual No. 1 “Let Me Down Easy” needed 18 weeks in 2011. Audience totals on the chart are derived, in part, using certain Arbitron Inc. copyrighted Persons 12+ audience estimates (under license © 2015, Arbitron Inc.). Country Indicator is tabulated using reported playlists and Nielsen BDS-monitored airplay at 102 stations, ranked by total plays. BULLETS l Awarded on Country Airplay to titles gaining audience or remaining flat from the previous week. A song will also receive a bullet if its percentage loss in audience does not exceed the percentage of monitored station downtime for the format. Titles that decline in audience but increase in detections will also receive a bullet if the total audience erosion for the week does not exceed 3%. Bullets are awarded on Country Indicator to titles gaining plays or remaining flat from the previous week. TIES On Country Airplay, if two songs are tied in total audience, the song with the larger increase in audience is placed first. On Country Indicator, if two songs are tied in total plays, the song with the larger increase in plays is placed first. RECURRENTS On Country Airplay, descending titles below No. 10 in either audience or detections are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks, provided that they are not still gaining enough audience points to bullet or if they rank below No. 10 and post a third consecutive week of audience decline, regardless of total chart weeks. On Country Indicator, descending, non-bulleted titles below No. 10 are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks. HOT SHOT DEBUT Awarded to the highest-ranking new entry on Country Airplay and Country Indicator, respectively. MOST ADDED The total number of new adds officially reported to Billboard by each reporting station, or by an automatic-add threshold (seven plays for the first time in a chart tracking week, according to Nielsen BDS) for stations that do not report adds. MOST INCREASED AUDIENCE/ PLAYS Most Increased Audience on Country Airplay and Most Increased Plays on Country Indicator list the songs with the greatest week-to-week increases in total audience or plays, respectively. AIRPOWER Awarded on Country Airplay to titles ranking inside top 20 in plays and audience rankings for the first time, with increases in both plays and audience. BREAKER Awarded on Country Airplay to titles achieving airplay (at least one detection) at 60% of reporting stations for the first time. © 2015 Prometheus Global Media, LLC BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE TITLE P ublishing-Licensing Org.
