Highway Patrol: SiriusXM Breakouts CMA Music Festival In Review

Highway Patrol: SiriusXM Breakouts
Despite what you’ve heard from Tim McGraw, the
highway does care – at least if you’re talking about
SiriusXM’s The Highway. Specifically,
the channel and the people behind it
care about breaking new artists and
music, and they’re happy to go it alone
if need be. Before Florida Georgia
Line ever put a pen to record-labelpaper, The Highway’s “Highway
Finds” feature helped drive 100,000Steve Blatter
plus downloads of “Cruise.” And,
according to the satcaster, a relative unknown named
Cole Swindell may soon follow in the duo’s footsteps.
So just what is it that SiriusXM has hit on? And is there
anything Country radio can learn from it? Country
Aircheck took a ride down The Highway to find out.
First and foremost, the station’s success with previously
unknown artists is no accident. “One of the things that
we feel very strongly about is our ability to discover new
artists and bring them to our 24.4 million subscribers,”
says SiriusXM SVP/GM Music Programming Steve Blatter.
“Whether it’s with ‘Highway Finds’ on The Highway or
[similar features] on our other formats, we identify them in a
very strategic way and expose them in a meaningful manner.
We know that our subscribers crave new music discovery and
‘Highway Finds’ are a way to satiate [their appetite].”
“’Highway Find’ is a category in and of itself,”
explains SiriusXM Sr. Dir./Country Programming John

CMA Music Festival In Review
Country Aircheck recently spoke with CMA SVP/
Marketing & Communications Sheri
Warnke for an assessment of this year’s
event and how its lessons will be applied
going forward.
CA: We know about the
attendance numbers and the
opening of Fan Fair X at the Music
City Center. What are some of this

year’s other successes that might be less obvious?
SW: The crowds were big, but they were big to the
very last show at Riverfront. Downtown streets were packed
through the end of the day Sunday, and usually we see
people start to thin out. That actually made it a little tougher
as we tried to load-out; people were just hanging on.
There were crowds everywhere that people may
not have seen. We had a high level of engagement
with HGTV, the Transitions area, Chevrolet and AT&T’s
karaoke stage. We had a lot of new partners and great
content on the Close Up Stage in the Music City Center.
We were able to bring in a lot more heritage artists –
artists at different levels in their careers – and we got a
lot of positive feedback from fans about that.
What unexpected challenges or difficulties
were there?
I’m not sure there were many things we didn’t
expect; we were prepared for a lot. We weren’t sure
about the new Music City Center, especially taking over
every exhibit hall, but it was flawless. I’m not saying
there weren’t problems across the event, but they were
generally things the consumer wouldn’t see. We didn’t
hear a lot of complaints.
Weather altered the course of a few things,
particularly Sunday night’s LP Field show. How
are those calls made?
Safety drives all those decisions, first and foremost.
And it’s not just CMA. We make those decisions in
conjunction with the Office of Emergency Management,
Metro Police, LP Field, the Titans organization, the TV
production and our live events team at CMA. When
radar and the information the OEM has is saying big
storms are coming in, safety
becomes the first priority.
Lenny Kravitz’s LP Field
performance didn’t go
over well with the crowd.
Shouldn’t Jason Aldean
have done a full set with
Lenny joining for a few
songs, rather than the
other way around?

Storme Warren summed it up when he came
onstage after, I thought. “This is, after all, Music City.”
Part of what we’re doing all four nights is having
surprises, and that’s why Lenny was there. You can find
fans who were blown away, and fans who wondered
why he was there. Comments on our social media
and at our information booth were split about 50-50.
And even if Jason had been the only performer of the
whole night, fans still wouldn’t be satisfied. He’s so hot
right now, they can’t get enough of him. The decision
to have Lenny on is part of what makes the festival
what it is. We hear back on research that fans love the
collaborations, and that was just a different one.
It doesn’t seem like Lenny’s appearance was the
issue, as much as the execution of that appearance,
but I understand it’s a sensitive issue.
It is.

As you walked around last week, what
mental notes were you making about ways to
improve or develop things further next year?
We’ll have wrap meetings in the next couple of
weeks, but one of the things I’ve noticed is that we
want to reach out to the community even more from a
volunteer standpoint. The Houston Rodeo, New Orleans
Jazzfest and Calgary Stampede attract a lot of local
volunteers, and we want to build our event so that
even more people from the community feel invested.
So outreach and getting people involved is one area.
We’ve had good success, but we’d like to build on that.
We’re also going to evaluate the parade. We want
to look at whether Wednesday is the right day to do
it, and if we want to keep doing it. We’ve had a lot
of success with international artists and fans – 27
countries were represented this year, but we want to
see if we can do international better and expand our
global artist showcase. And we didn’t even use all of the
Music City Center, just the exhibit halls. There are more
opportunities to bring things in there, so we want to
explore what else we can do in that building.
Final thoughts?
We had more artists than ever performing and
appearing, and I think the highest caliber of artists we’ve
ever had on every stage. This event would not be as
successful as it is if the artist community didn’t embrace it
the way they do. We got a lot of good feedback from them
and we can’t thank them enough for what they do to give
back to the fans. That’s what this is all about. –Chuck Aly
Chart Chat
Congrats to Jake Owen, Keith
Gale, Josh Easler and the entire
RCA promotion team on scoring this
week’s No. 1 single with Owen’s
“Anywhere With You.” The song is his
fourth consecutive chart-topper from
Barefoot Blue Jean Night, joining the
title track, “Alone With You” and “The
One That Got Away.”

MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE
KBUL/Reno PD Derek Gunn discusses
his most influential artists, songs, albums
and concerts:
1. Jason Michael Carroll/ Livin’ Our
Love Song: The first time I heard it, loved
it. When I met my wife at a festival we do
every year in Yerington, NV, I found out she,
too, loved Jason. A year from that, we had
booked Jason again and I had it all worked
Derek Gunn
out with his manager for me to be able to
ask her to marry me onstage during his
set. Long story short, the onstage proposal didn’t happen, but
she said yes anyway and it became our wedding song.
2. Alabama/40 Hour Week: I was sitting in my parent’s
house after school one day listening to KUPL/Portland. This
came on and from the first listen, it had me. I had to have
it. As soon as it was over, I ran down to the store, found the
CD and bought it.
3. Luke Bryan/I Don’t Want This Night to End: Luke came
to Reno last year and my five-year-old daughter loves him. I
promised her I’d take her to meet him.
4. Joe Diffie/Third Rock From The Sun: As Jason
Aldean says, it was “1994” and I had front row seats to see
Joe in concert. The song was huge and when the lights went
out, the computer voice started: “Welcome To Earth ... “ the
crowd went nuts.
5. Chris Cagle/I Breathe In, I Breathe Out: I was three
weeks into my job as PD here and we had Chris in for an
acoustic “eat-and-greet” show. Halfway through his set, he
told the story behind the song before he played it. Yeah, we
were using our duct-taped radio station PA system with our
car lot remote speakers, but it was at that moment I fell in
love with an acoustic show. There’s something about just a
singer and their guitar that blows you away.
• A highly regarded song or album you’ve never
heard: The O Brother, Where Art Thou soundtrack.
• An “important” piece of music you just don’t get:
Michael Bublé. I get it, girls love him, I’m just not a girl.
• An album you played or listened to incessantly: Jason
Michael Carroll’s “Growing Up Is Getting Old”
• One obscure or non-country song everyone should
listen to right now: “Play Hard” by David Guetta featuring
Ne-Yo and Akon.

OFF THE RECORD: Kree Harrison
American Idol’s Kree Harrison puts
an industry spin on the artist interview:
I grew up listening to KTHT
(Country Legends )/Houston. They’d
play everything from Patsy Cline to
Conway Twitty. Most of the time when
listening, I’m on my grandma’s front
porch drinking coffee with her and it
just kind of relaxes me.
Kree Harrison Since the show ended I haven’t done
anything except sleep and talk about myself.
The American Idol family works their butts off all
season long to constantly find good songs. The further it gets
in, the more in-tune they are with each contestant.
It’s hard to choose a song that you would want to sing
every night on tour for the rest of your life, but I didn’t even
have to think about “All Cried Out.” Lyrically, melodically, it
was 100% me. I wish I would’ve written it, but I’m so happy
to do a song by Katrina Elam, Gordie Sampson, and Steve
McEwan. I have so much respect for those songwriters.
It feels weird to say that I’ve done American Idol. I definitely
had a different mentality about it before I went in. I thought,
“I’m never going to do a talent show.” But my sister told me I
should try out and I realized the show really gives artists, not
just singers, but artists the platform to kick-start their career.
And that’s an amazing thing.
I can’t even explain how much of an impact The Judds
were on my life. My mom, my sister and I were like ... it’s
us – The Judds. I was at dinner the other night and Wynonna
was at a table nearby. I was star-struck. She came up and
introduced herself because she had heard I was such a huge
fan. And now we text each other.
When I’m on tour I want only blue M&M’s in my dressing
room. I’m totally kidding. I’m pretty easy, not really that hard
to please. I’d like to consider myself cool in any environment.
The best advice came from when we got to meet Smokey
Robinson on the show. He told us, “No matter how high in the
clouds your head is, always keep your feet on the ground.”
to provide feedback via the channel’s social media
platforms. That information and national SoundScan data
are used to gauge early response; Marks pays particular
attention to the sales numbers. “I trend every song on a

June 24, 2013
weekly basis,” he says. “I run tracking numbers from the
minute we start hitting it on the air until it either goes out
of our system or continues on. It’s a strong part of how we
evaluate the fitness of the songs.”
Marks says two weeks or less tells him whether a
song is going to “ring the bell” from a sales perspective,
but “no song is in there for less than 150 spins. From
there we compare our internal research with the sales
data and make a determination as to whether or not
it continues in regular rotation or if
it’s discontinued. The things that I find
[work best] are songs that stretch the
boundary of what would be described
as mainstream country music today.”
Lately, Marks says that
description applies to a South Georgia
John Marks native named Cole Swindell. Swindell
is a former frat brother and merch
guy for Luke Bryan and, since 2010, a songwriter for
Sony/ATV (Scotty McCreery, “Water Tower Town”). He’s
among a handful of artists generating impressive sales
strictly off airplay on The Highway. In the seven weeks
since “Chillin’ It” was dubbed a “Highway Find,” Marks
says sales of the single have gone from just more than
800 per week to more than 13,600.
Stories like that have certainly been raising the
satcaster’s profile within the music industry. “The
activity between record labels and SiriusXM has
definitely increased over the last few years,” notes
Blatter. “And we’re not hearing just from the promotion
and marketing people, but from A&R staffs and artist
managers. We regularly get calls inquiring about music
on SiriusXM that they’re not hearing anywhere else.”
John Alexander manages Sarah
Darling and lauds the program for
“giving a jumpstart to artists that
terrestrial radio may not get behind

of sales came out after eight weeks of airplay, she’d
sold more than 8,000 downloads.
[SiriusXM] was instrumental in that.”
After Darling’s departure from Black
River, The Highway also added
Darling’s “Little Umbrellas.” Without
the backing of a major label, the single
still sold almost 5,000 copies in its first
two weeks.
Chris Loss
SiriusXM’s role in breaking new
artists and music is just as important to Stoney Creek VP/
Promotion Chris Loss. “For us The Highway has always
been a priority because we identified it very early on
and wanted to be a part of what they were doing,” he
says. “They championed Parmalee with ‘Musta Had A
Good Time’ and they were an integral part of launching
‘Carolina’ as we took it to FM radio.” (CA’s Chuck Aly was
along for January’s one-day, three city Carolina CoastTo-Coast Tour that incorporated a big push by SiriusXM;
read here.) Both singles reached No. 1 on SiriusXM The
Highway’s Hot 30 Live countdown, and “Carolina” is
hovering around 7,000 downloads per week according
to Nielsen SoundScan. SiriusXM remains the overall
spin leader. “What [The Highway] is doing is viable and
produces results,” Loss says.
Though reluctant to compare the very different
satellite and terrestrial decision making processes,
Marks is curious to see sluggish support for artists
showing proven success. “One of the things I encourage
some labels to do is to allow us to step out on a song
to help them determine whether or not they want to
bring it to a larger market, and some have taken us
up on that,” he says. “We showed tremendous sales
and research on Parmalee. They are a star artist with
two hits – in my opinion and objectively from the data
– but for some reason terrestrial has been slow to
pick up on them. The metrics today with PPM create a
whole different dynamic in the way music choices are
made, though. That’s really the thing that differentiates
terrestrial and satellite. We don’t have to worry about
that. Our metric is subscriber satisfaction.”
The difference in business models and the effects
Page 13
of PPM aside, is there something that makes the
SiriusXM audience more receptive to new music than
terrestrial’s? “Many people who subscribe to SiriusXM
are music lovers, and they tune to our channels to hear
new music that they can’t hear elsewhere,” Marks says.
“It’s a combination of not only being able to play the
hits, but being able to provide meaningful exposure to
new and unsigned artists that doesn’t happen otherwise.
The fun part for me is being able to find new music
that will resonate with listeners and shake some of the
foundation of what country music is today.”
