A Class Divided – Why did they shoot that king?
As we watch the film A Class Divided, take notes about specific displays of prejudice. You will use this
information to write a 2 page paper about how prejudice is created and maintained, and use specific
examples from the film to illustrate these roots of prejudice.
You should fill out the boxes that I have provided for you, and also use the remaining space to write
down any additional or miscellaneous information that you would want to remember for your paper.
PAY ATTENTION TO BOTH WHAT THE PARTICIPANTS SAY AND DO, AND WHAT THE TEACHER SAYS AND
DOES.

THE PAPER:
A.
You must identify portions of the video that illustrate key themes from your reading. While you should
focus on the terms and theories related to prejudice and social psychology, anything that we have
discussed or read about in class is appropriate. (For example, identify instances of vivid cases, ingroup/out-group, etc.) When you do so, you should briefly explain the phenomenon, and then go on to
illustrate how that phenomenon was displayed in the film.
B.
Questions to consider in your reaction paper:
1. What scene or scenes do you think you'll still remember a month from now and why those scenes?
2. What part of the film surprised you?
3. What did the children's body language indicate about the impact of discrimination?
4. How did the negative and positive labels placed on a group become self-fulfilling prophecies?
5. What features did Elliott ascribe to the superior and inferior groups and how did those characteristics
reflect stereotypes about blacks and whites?
6. How did Elliott's discrimination create no-win situations for those placed in the inferior group? How
did she selectively interpret behavior to confirm the stereotypes she had assigned?
C.
