Barbican Presents is the Barbican’s curated season comprising the very best international ensembles and artists. Alongside our resident and associate concerts, these performances form an engaging and rewarding season that is remarkable in its quality and variety. Recitals, an extensive Baroque series, residencies by our five international associate orchestras, opera in concert, and the best of the contemporary classical music scene are all key features of Barbican Presents. Working closely with artistic partners close to home and from across the world, in the Barbican’s venues and beyond, Barbican Presents tells multi-faceted stories about composers, artists and repertoire. Complementing the concerts, Barbican Guildhall Creative Learning provides opportunities for audiences and local communities of all ages and levels of experience to get more involved in the programme. barbican.org.uk Sensational performances have made the LSO one of the best-loved and most inspiring orchestras in the world. A typical week might see them on stage in the Barbican Hall with Principal Conductor Valery Gergiev; recording the soundtrack to the latest Hollywood blockbuster (the LSO have an 80-year partnership with Abbey Road Studios where they recorded Star Wars and Harry Potter); or making ground-breaking contributions to digital music-making (they pioneered the YouTube Symphony Orchestra, the world’s first online youth orchestra, and set up their own label, LSO Live, to capture the excitement and power of the live concert experience). The last two years have been special for the LSO: they appeared at both the opening and closing ceremonies of the London 2012 Olympics as well as at every major European summer festival (including the BBC Proms) over the summer, and gave annual outdoor concerts with Valery Gergiev in Trafalgar Square to over 10,000 people. They have been the Barbican’s Resident Orchestra for 32 years, ever since the Barbican first opened its doors, and in March 2013 they celebrated ten years since LSO St Luke’s was transformed from a former church to the dynamic music education and performance centre it is today – the home of LSO Discovery – with community at its heart. lso.co.uk classical music London Symphony Orchestra Resident at the Barbican 3 On stage this season Barbican Presents BBC Symphony Orchestra Associate Orchestra The BBC Symphony Orchestra is one of the UK’s finest orchestras, performing a distinctive and exciting range of music from works at the heart of classical music to premieres from today’s finest composers, performing extensively as Associate Orchestra of the Barbican and as the backbone of the BBC Proms. Led by its conducting team of Sakari Oramo, Semyon Bychkov, Jiří Bélohlávek and Sir Andrew Davis, and new Artist in Association Brett Dean, the orchestra makes numerous recordings at its home in Maida Vale, performs throughout the world and runs an innovative education programme. All BBC SO concerts at the Barbican are broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and streamed online. bbc.co.uk/symphonyorchestra Academy of Ancient Music Associate Ensemble From Monteverdi’s operas to Mozart concertos, north African folk music to Handel’s Messiah, the AAM’s performances at the Barbican this season uncover neglected music and celebrate favourite masterworks. Join the orchestra that ‘blazes a trail followed by ensembles everywhere’ (The Independent, 2013) for an array of music-making in Barbican Hall and Milton Court Concert Hall. aam.co.uk Britten Sinfonia Associate Ensemble One of the world’s finest chamber orchestras, Britten Sinfonia has built its outstanding reputation on stellar playing and intelligent, illuminating programming developed alongside guest artists from across the musical spectrum. ‘A spirit of adventure has won Britten Sinfonia a reputation as one of the UK’s most forward-thinking musical ensembles.’ Financial Times 4 classical music brittensinfonia.com Barbican international associates Our international family of orchestras includes five of the world’s leading orchestras with whom we’ve developed innovative new partnerships. Regular residencies at the Barbican involve symphonic and chamber music concerts, family events, new commissions and creative learning work that bring opportunities to engage with and participate in great music-making to young people in east London. Described by Alex Ross in the New Yorker as ‘a singer not only of flair and power but of intelligence and taste’, Joyce DiDonato is the subject of this season’s artist spotlight. Opening with an exuberant evening of bel canto opera and closing with a glittering concert with the New York Philharmonic, the series takes in Handel’s Alcina and an intimate chamber recital and masterclass in Milton Court along the way, providing an unmissable opportunity to appreciate the many facets of ‘the perfect 21st-century diva’ (New York Times). Joyce DiDonato Artist Spotlight: 25 Sep, 10 Oct 2014; 14, 15, 17 Apr 2015 In Celebration of John Tavener In what would have been his 70th birthday year we celebrate Sir John Tavener’s remarkable musical legacy. To open their Barbican season Britten Sinfonia gives the world premiere of one of Tavener’s last completed works, Flood of Beauty, a setting of a Sanskrit poem through which Tavener returned to his perennial theme of the Eternal Feminine. This is followed by a BBC Symphony Orchestra Total Immersion day devoted to the composer’s life and work. Flood of Beauty: 28 Sep 2014 Total Immersion: John Tavener Remembered: 5 Oct 2014 This season three major highlights in our Baroque programme unfold around the eternal themes of love, intrigue, war and betrayal. Monteverdi’s Coronation of Poppea, the second in the Academy of Ancient Music’s three-year Monteverdi opera cycle, provides the intrigue and dirty dealing, while a unique opportunity to hear his complete Eighth Book of Madrigals (Les Arts Florissants) explores the themes of love and war. Finally, Betrayal is the title and the theme of a new, site-specific project by the adventurous ensemble I Fagiolini: a ‘polyphonic crime drama’ inspired by the life and work of Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa and music’s most infamous murderer. Monteverdi Coronation of Poppea: 4 Oct 2014 Betrayal: 13–15 May 2015 Monteverdi Eighth Book of Madrigals: 24 May 2015 classical music Love, Intrigue, War and Betrayal 5 season highlights Joyce DiDonato Artist Spotlight Valery Gergiev with the London Symphony Orchestra and Mariinsky Opera a sumptuous concert of late-Romantic orchestral showpieces, an innovative staged performance of Stravinsky’s Petrushka, and a concert from their cutting-edge contemporary CONTACT! series. The Barbican is the place to enjoy the very best of Russian music in London this season, as Valery Gergiev brings his own Mariinsky Opera to London and embarks upon his final complete London season with the London Symphony Orchestra. With the Mariinsky Opera as one of the highlights of the programme for UK-Russia Year of Culture 2014 he showcases two contrasting operas dealing with archetypal aspects of Russian identity: Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov, the ultimate Russian Nationalist epic, and the UK premiere of Rodion Shchedrin’s The Left-Hander, based on a famous satirical fable about Russia’s relationship with the West. With the LSO, Gergiev returns to the iconic repertoire of his homeland with five all-Russian programmes including Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No 3 and Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No 2 with Russian pianist Denis Matsuev, the subject of this season’s UBS Soundscapes: LSO Artist Portrait. Sir Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker: 10, 11, 12, 14 & 15 Feb 2015 Mariinsky Opera: 3, 4 & 5 Nov 2014 LSO/Gergiev 21 & 23 Sep, 11 & 13 Nov 2014, 19 Feb, 12 May 2015 6 classical music International Orchestras: Sir Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker New York Philharmonic international associate residency Residencies by the best international orchestras are key feature of the Barbican’s classical music programme, and there are two to enjoy this season. Sir Simon Rattle has chosen to mark his 60th birthday with a major London Residency at the Barbican and Southbank Centre, focussing on the music that means the most to him: a complete cycle of Sibelius symphonies in honour of the 150th anniversary of the composer’s birth, Mahler’s Resurrection symphony and music by Helmut Lachenmann. Later in spring 2015, for their second Barbican International Associate residency, Alan Gilbert and the New York Philharmonic bring three programmes including New York Philharmonic international associate residency: 17, 18 & 19 Apr 2015 New Opera and vocal music The Barbican’s commitment to working with its artistic partners to present exciting new opera and vocal music continues. In addition to Shchedrin’s The Lefthander, the Barbican and BBC Symphony Orchestra present Netia Jones’ stunning new production of Unsuk Chin’s exhilarating opera Alice in Wonderland. Later in the season, the Barbican and Britten Sinfonia have co-commissioned Sentences, a substantial new work by Nico Muhly for counter-tenor Iestyn Davies, inspired by the life and tragic death of war-time code-breaker Alan Turing. To close the season the LSO presents a new children’s opera by Jonathan Dove based on the Greek myth Theseus and the Minotaur. It will be conducted by Sir Simon Rattle with a cast and orchestra made up of professional and community singers and muscians. Alice in Wonderland: 8 Mar 2015 Sentences: 6 Jun 2015 Jonathan Dove new opera: 5 Jul 2015 Boulez at 90 Pierre Boulez is one of the most important voices in post-war European culture. As a composer he has defined the sound of 20th and 21st century music; as conductor he has re-defined the possibilities of Mahler, Wagner and more; as cultural thinker he has shaken up the establishment; and as a teacher he has inspired the next generation. In 2015 we celebrate his 90th year with a BBC Symphony Orchestra Total Immersion day and concerts by the London Symphony Orchestra and the pioneering Ensemble Intercontemporain, founded by Boulez himself in1976.
