JULY 31, 2010 — Newsletter of the
“Small but Mighty Club”
Aloha,
We had another lively meeting on Wednesday. We welcomed back Jane
and Richard Emery after a two month absence. It appears that I have a
small group (you can guess who they are) who are critiquing my every
move during the meetings. According to them I started late, ended early
and in between didn’t follow the program. Other than that I was fine.
Richard, my special Accountant, told me that I can’t count. I had said we
collected $650.00 for the school supply drive but in fact, we collected
$750.00, which is fabulous! As you recall I highlighted which of the two
doors collected the most money at Safeway and it just so happened it was
the team I was on. I have made an executive decision regarding the additional $100.00 that I missed and it has been determined that the missing
$100.00 was collected by Door #2, which means I was still on the winning team. How ironic!
We will have John, our Community Service Chair present the $750 check
to the Keiki Cupboard team at our next meeting.
This next Wednesday we will have Ron, our Foundation Chair, highlight
what we are looking to do for Polio Plus and the Foundation throughout
the year and I’m sure it will be presented in his always unique way.
Remember we need everyone’s help on selling the tickets to the Spaghetti Dinner. Have a wonderful week and see you Wednesday morning.
Ed

JUNGLE TO JUNGLE—JILL PRIDEMORE & AMANDA WILSON
.
Amanda handles the Curriculum and Jill handles the logistics of this unique program which teaches science and sociology of jungle cultures via virtual technology.
Last year – Amazon at Kalama Intermediate for their 20-member Science Club.
They visited Peru, Columbia and Brazil. They had a sister school in the Amazon
and shared the Q&A that each school’s students had with each other in a video
presentation. The video showed the students’ similarities and difference which is
the sociology part of the project. The science part is presenting 3-5 minute lessons which include interviews with scientists. They also do animal studies. And
they have lessons on comparative science projects on plant and animals.
This year the project is working with 150 students at Kihei Charter and the project
now has a Facebook-type program for interaction. They will be going to Borneo
– Indonesia, Malaysia. Amanda and Jill are working with World Wildlife Foundation and Borneo Child Aid (group who sets up schools for children) – allowing
them to connect with children on Maui. Amanda and Jill are taking digital cameras and a computer for the children at a school in Borneo.
Big Question: Funding—last year the project was on our own. This year they are
having fundraisers and are seedkng private donations and sponsorships. Our club
secretary showed Amanda and Jill how to look for Rotary Clubs in Borneo on the
RI website – so we both learned from each other! Amanda and Jill hope to connect with these clubs, explain the project and make presentations, and hopefully
get some funding.
