I-45 Bearings, p. I-473 INTRODUCTION Market Share Reporter (MSR) is a compilation of market share reports from periodical literature. As shown by reviews of previous editions plus correspondence and telephone contact with many users, this is a unique resource for competitive analysis, diversification planning, marketing research, and other forms of economic and policy analysis: Categories of Market Shares Entries in Market Share Reporter fall into four broad categories. Items were included if they showed the relative strengths of participants in a market or provided subdivisions of economic activity in some manner that could assist the analyst. • Corporate market shares show the names of companies that participate in an industry, produce a product, or provide a service. Each company's market share is shown as a percent of total industry or product sales for a defined period, usually a year. In some cases, the company's share represents the share of the sales of the companies shown (group total)because shares of the total market were not cited in the source or were not relevant. In some corporate share tables, brand information appears behind company names in parentheses. In these cases, the tables can be located using either the company or the brand index. This is the twenty-fourth edition of Market Share Reporter. As with previous editions, Market Share Reporter provides market share coverage on international markets, with an emphasis on the United States. Market Share Reporter contains many of the same features that it has had in recent editions. Frequent users will find that the book is still primarily arranged around the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code. Features of the 2014 edition include- • More than 3,600 new entries. • Entries arranged under both SIC and NAICS codes. • Corporate, brand, product, service and commodity market shares. • Coverage of private and public sector activities. • Comprehensive indexes, including products, companies, brands, places, sources, NAICS, ISIC, Harmonized and SIC codes. • Table of Topics showing topical subdivisions of chapters with page references. • Graphics. • Annotated source listing-provides publishers' information for journals cited in this edition of MSR. • MSR is a one-of-a-kind resource for ready reference, marketing research, economic analysis, planning, and a host of other disciplines. ( • Institutional shares are like corporate shares but show the shares of other kinds of organizations. The most common institutional entries in MSR display the shares of states, provinces, or regions in an activity. The shares of notfor-profit organizations in some economic or service functions fall under this heading. • Brand market shares are similar to corporate shares with the difference that brand names are shown. Brand names include equivalent categories such as the names of television programs, magazines, publishers' imprints, etc. In some cases, the names of corporations appear in parentheses behind the brand name; in these cases, tables can be located using either the brand or the company index. XXI - ~= Volume 1 Market Share Reporter- 2014 SIC and Topic Assignments *535* Frozen Foods 'v!SR's SIC classifications are based on the codng as defined in the Standard Industrial Claslijication Manual for 1987, issued by the Bu~eau of the Census, Department of Commerce. fhis 1987 classification system introduced sigtlificant revisions to the 1972 classification (as slightly modified in 1977); the 1972 system is still in widespread use (even by the Federal government); care should be used in comparing data classified in the new and in the old way. Organization of Entries Entries are organized in a uniform manner. A sample entry is provided below. Explanations for each part of an entry, shown in boxes, are provided below the sample. In some cases, a 3-digit ~IC had to be used because the substance of the table was broader than the nearest 4-digit SIC ategory. Such SICs always end with a zero. In et other cases, the closest classification possile was at the 2-digit level; these SICs terminate with double-zero. If the content of the table did not fit the 2-digit level, it was assigned to the first chapter of MSR and classified by topic only. Topic assignments are based on terminology for commodities, products, industries, and services in the SIC Manual; however, in many cases phrasing has been simplified, shortened, or updated; in general, journalistically succinct rather than bureaucratically exhaustive phraseology was used throughout.
