South Central Regional Director Chelle Luper Wilson was in attendance, along with International President Carolyn House Stewart. Legacies, including 18th International President Mattelia B. Graves and daughters, walked down the pink carpet. Photos were also taken of mother/daughter duos in matching outfits. The breakfast ended with an energetic Legacy Parade 2nd line, led by Golden Soror Mary Edward and the Kipp McDonough middle school brass band. CELEBRATING OUR CITIZENS Much like the city of New Orleans, the 11 honorees at the Public Luncheon possess the qualities of perseverance, tenacity and steadfastness. The guests of honor ranged from a pint size Academy Award nominated actress, Quevanzhane Wallis, to a Louisiana Supreme Court Judge, Chief Justice Bernette Joshua Johnson and a university president who is a Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient. They inspired attendees to continue to persevere timeless service by remembering that we are motivated by a sense of pride and a spirit of community which leads us to meet the needs of others. One of the surprises of the luncheon was the announcement by the Regional Director that four young ladies in attendance, as her special guests, were actually the recipients of scholarships from the Chelle Wilson NOLA Scholars Fellowship Program. These young ladies participate in EYL locally and may very well be honored at a future Public Luncheon as a result of the influence of Alpha Kappa Alpha in their lives. Thirteen participants battled it out at the EAF AKApollo for a chance to win $500. More than 1,800 Sorors and guests attended this record-breaking event. Radio personality Big Herc was the emcee for the night, and guest judges included radio personality Kelder Summer-Jones and representatives from Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi and Omega Psi Phi. The iAKA reporter positions are for Sorors who would like to participate in an interactive group without a major commitment of being on a large regional committee. Sorors can share stories and info as often or as little as they want! Anyone can do it! Just share your stories about what happened at your cluster retreat or chapter events and it may end up on akasouthcentral.org, Facebook, Twitter, the Sensation newsletter or our SCR updates. All you need is your smart phone to take photos or videos and email your one paragraph stories to ireporter@akasouthcentral.org.
