Non-Profit Sector
Program Overview:
This Social Justice and Community
Development SHSM will provide students
with the tools to become engaged
community members. It will foster the
development of socially aware, globally
minded critical thinkers.
Students will:
Through this program students will KNOW
the role of NGOs in a local, national and
global context.
• Students will UNDERSTAND, through
a variety of experiences, the complex
issues associated with social justice
and community development: diversity,
sensitivity, equity and inclusion,
civic mindedness, global thinking.
Further, they will understand the
processes associated with facilitating
communities as they identify their
needs and goals.
• Through this SHSM, students will also
DO. Practical experiences will help
students develop their understanding of
how to work with diverse groups, build
climates of collaboration, increase their
personal awareness and empathy and
deliver concrete results.
Course Package
Students in this Non-Profit SHSM can continue in the non-profit sector through all
four of the designated pathways including: apprenticeship, college, university and
workplace.
The program includes:
• Four Social Justice and Community Development major credits that provide sector specific knowledge and skills; three other required credits in English, Business or
Science, in which some expectations are met through learning activities
contextualized to the Non-profit sector
• Two cooperative education credits that provide authentic learning experiences in
a workplace setting, enabling students to refine, extend, apply, and practise sectorspecific knowledge and skills
• Sector-Recognized Certifications and Safety Awareness Training
• Experiential Learning through Cooperative Education
• Use of the Ontario Skills Passport (OSP)
• “Reach Ahead” Experiences connecting to post secondary and career opportunities
Who would be interested in the program?
Students who enroll in this Non-Profit SHSM are committed to facilitating community
and global development. They want to “be the change [they] want to see in the world”.
